To wonder if friend is lying about private jet?

Harlowwolrah · 05/09/2022 00:19

So I’ve never had my friend down to be a liar but I feel like this doesn’t sound true.

She told me the company she works for has their own plane and she travels from London to Glasgow each week.

Shes on a salary below £40K (earns more than me) and I just can’t believe a company would pay private jet prices for someone on that salary . I work for a global company and the private jet is only used by the ceo and executives.

OP posts:

I had a family member that worked for a small company owned and run by a person who happened to be a pilot. He owned a small plane and would look for any excuse to fly. Instead of buying plane tickets, he just flew himself and staff to meetings.

redtshirt50 · 05/09/2022 04:22

She probably isn't flying solo, but on a spare seat with other ('more important employees as PP have said.

If she doesn't normally make outlandish claims I see no reason no to believe her.

I would often stay in very fancy hotels / eat very fancy meals when I was on business trips with someone much higher up in the company than me.

But when I went alone it would be much less glamorous.

JustKittenAround · 05/09/2022 04:44

It’s not solo on a “jet.” It might be something akin or loosely so. Maybe she flew on one hand so has applied it to her other travels.

Let her feel good and romanize it.

Just lay off if you care about her. She wouldn’t have told you such a low salary if she was pretending to be better than you. She would have claimed far more money in order to impress.

Meraas · 05/09/2022 04:54

Difficult to say without knowing what she does,

But yes, I agree with you that it’s not plausible. We have MDs on £1m+ salaries who will never be flown in the jet, it’s for the CEO (and maybe COO, CFO sometimes).

OP hasn’t said anything that implies she will confront her friend?

The company will be chartering one for multiple employees. The size of private keys (as most people know them anyway) varies quite a bit but they can take 12-15 passengers so it would certainly work out more cost effective to pay £5/10k to charter a private jet than pay air or rail fare (in addition to risk of delays), for 12-15 employees.

I used to work in Aviation and this is very, very common for businesses. Some private jet companies now offer up empty seats on flights, to the general public and depending on the route, it can sometimes work out much cheaper.

Have you seen the prices of some domestic routes these days? I saw a flight from LBA to LHR the other week - £690 one way!

This is what is happening. DH's company (not in UK) does private flights to their overseas properties/areas because if there are enough people travelling, it's actually a lot more cost effective, and there are fewer delays. But she isn't sitting by herself sipping champagne on a Jetstream - she's probably on a small, servicable aircraft with at least ten others from her company and likely more.

A friend told me that her DH's private flight offered a loo that was enclosed by canvas rather than walls...!

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/09/2022 05:10

Presumably you know the company she works for, we don't - you can find out if they have their own planes, surely?

Sometimes people DO do things that sound implausible - when I rented my house from the council, I was also working for a (then) current tv celeb. I never told anyone as anyone who knew who they were wouldn't have believed me in a million years. Its far LESS plausible than private jets!

Eve · 05/09/2022 05:16

1 company I know has a private plane ( multi national - lots of sites in different parts of the country - access to runways) you could book onto it like booking onto a bus. Plane did a tour every morning & every evening doing pick ups & drop offs.

wasn’t glamorous!

Gumbo · 05/09/2022 05:18

I worked for a company that had the one. The company wasn't massive but the owner liked people to know how much money he had, and whenever he was visiting another site and using the jet it was company policy that staff who would be travelling to that site (eg. Paris) had to go on the jet with him rather that a commercial flight, as it saved money. People went out of their way to try to find alternative dated as nobody wanted to fly on it...because they weren't allowed to access the owner's 'private' toilet!

Also, a few years ago I worked for an oil company who flew people out to oil fields around the world on a private jet... I went on it and it was nuts - it has leather couches instead of seats etc...

So yes, your friend is probably telling the truth.

Sswhinesthebest · 05/09/2022 05:46

Be suitably impressed and ask for photos.

Tierne · 05/09/2022 05:48

Ask her why shes bragging about this as its quite literally the worst thing a person can do with respect to the planet.

Meraas · 05/09/2022 04:55

OP hasn’t said anything that implies she will confront her friend?

True but she has the choice to make. She was invested enough to post here. I’d imagine that the fantasy of her friend has worn thin?

Also, might be a cultural difference, but where I am from this would be a confront or let it go situation. You don’t have false friends and you shouldn’t be one.

Just my culture. It’s uncommon to not straight up confront these issues unless you suspect they are just trying to impress.

My apologies if I transferred a more straightforward type of relationship on OP.

Hope that helps

georgarina · 05/09/2022 06:13

Why do you think she’s lying? Does she lie normally? Some companies do this. Seems weird to automatically assume she’s randomly made it up

TeenDivided · 05/09/2022 06:25

I used to work for a Dutch company. We had a private charter plane that flew weekly to The Netherlands. It was cheaper than us all trecking to Heathrow and we got more time on the day for meetings. The deal was that if someone ore important needed the space the most junior got 'bumped' off the flight.

So I can easily believe her.

ememem84 · 05/09/2022 06:29

I’d believe it. Where I am sometimes it works out cheaper to hop on a jet than to get a “regular” plane.

I work in private wealth and a couple of the families I work “for” have a jet together. If I’m travelling to France for example to meet with their accountants then we’ve flown on the jet (a gulf stream). Flight is an hour from here to the alps. Whereas to go via Gatwick or Heathrow would involve an overnight stay (am Channel Islands) and a few flights and lots of waiting at airports. This way we can go out early and get home same day. Essentially a quick hop over for meetings and le lunch.

Hillrunning · 05/09/2022 06:34

I'm pretty sure Specsavers has an hq employee jet for commuting from offices. Alrhough i dont remember where i got that information from. I f the trip was being made often enough by multiple employees it makes a lot of sense.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 05/09/2022 06:36

I used to work as a field visual merchandiser for a big high street fashion chain. I was based in the region I lived, and did almost all my travelling by car, and occasionally by train (or commercial flights on the very rare occasion I travelled abroad.)
But there were 2 occasions that I was asked to be somewhere that people much higher up than me were going. A hand full of us travelled by the same private jet as a the executives. It’s not like the Kardashian’s, with champagne etc. It’s not glamorous, just cheaper. I can very well believe your friend.

NewtoHolland · 05/09/2022 06:40

Yeah pretty common Specsavers have them too

SavoirFlair · 05/09/2022 06:54

British people love nothing more than to try and pick holes in another person’s success or enjoyment in their life

@Harlowwolrah the truth isn’t always humdrum or obvious.

autumn1610 · 05/09/2022 06:59

I used to get a helicopter every so often with my old business at the time I was not on much more than £20k. So entirely plausible lots of companies have private air travel

oopsfellover · 05/09/2022 07:00

For what reason do you think she might lie about this?

GlitterB0mb · 05/09/2022 07:03

This situation is what the phrase: "Pics or it didn't happen;" was invented for.

It's not impossible, but like others have said it's unlikely she's on her own.

newnamethanks · 05/09/2022 07:06

Sounds reasonable. Someone's got to hand out the drinks.

greektreacle · 05/09/2022 07:07

savethebeesandthecees · 05/09/2022 00:34

What sector?

If Fed Ex then quite likely

😂😂

LondonQueen · 05/09/2022 07:10

It depends what her role is, in some industry's high rankling roles don't come with a great income. What would she gain out of lying?
