AIBU to be angry my hairdresser took so long?

I just need to vent. I'm just feeling really frustrated.

Went to get my hair cut this morning, It was a half head of highlights and a trim. My hair is fine and shoulder length, so definitely not a lot of it.

My appointment was at 11, the girl took until 12 to do a half head of foils, then said she'd leave it in 45 minutes and went to do her next client. Over an hour later she came to check on my foils, got the Saturday girl to wash it (another 5 minutes later) then I was sat for another 20 minutes before she came to do the cut. I asked her not to blow dry it as I said that my parking ticket was due to expire and left. At this point it was 2 o clock.

By this time I was so hungry and just angry that I had been sat without any attention for so long during the appointment. I have a young baby, so it's rare that I get out on my own to do appointments like this and the way I'm feeling now I don't want to ever get my hair cut again. I just feel like my whole day was ruined.

Am I being silly?!

My hairdressers are just like this - they overbook then go off and sort someone else out, charge a fortune and try to appease you with extra coffees etc.

My trim and highlights usually take around 3 hours. I thought that was about normal?

No way🙄.... half head foils and trim and blow dry ...1.5 hrs max

ClocksGoingBackwards · 03/09/2022 20:55

I think this is normal at hairdressers sadly. Going to the hairdressers seems to carry this image of being pampered and feeling relaxed so when the reality is the opposite, you’re expected to fit in with other clients and pay a small fortune for the privilege, it’s really disappointing.

Snugglemonkey · 03/09/2022 20:56

Last time I went, it took 3 hours to do my colour (one solid colour) and a trim. I have not been since. It is too hard to find time.

Katsufatsu · 03/09/2022 20:59

I hate the hairdressers. I have the same hair as you and they've taken 4 fucking hours before (Toni & Guy). I have found a local lady now who takes 1.5 hours max.

I just hate getting hair done so YANBU

Wexone · 03/09/2022 20:59

have long thick hair get low lights colour cut and blow dry mine takes nearly 4 hours. I bring coffee and food plenty of magazines and a book sit back and relax. there would have been no way i would have said no to the blow dry as to me tbis is the best thing about getting my hair done. is this your 1st time getting this done ? did you enquire how long it takes when booking. did you say anything when you paid ?I would have put more money on my car ticket. most places near me are on an app now so can add more time on my phone

Porridgeaddiction · 03/09/2022 21:01

Just for a bit more info- my last hairdresser could do a full head of foils, cut and blow dry in around 2 hours.

I wasn't offered a drink or even a magazine during my time waiting. I asked for a glass of water, which never came, which probably added to my frustration

Hmm for half a head that does seem quite a while. I'd expect about a 1330 finish? - so I guess that sort of ties in with the 20 minuted break. I expect she was having lunch, did they offer you tea and biscuits?

SpangledShambles · 03/09/2022 21:03

This is why I stopped going to the hairdressers. I don’t mind paying the money for a good colourist and cutter. But I think it’s completely unreasonable to leave us sitting around for hours on end while they fit multiple clients in. I would rather pay more for a fast track option. I also find it incredibly boring, noisy and hot in the hairdressers. What crazy person thinks this is being ‘spoilt’??! Bleugh

Moonshine160 · 03/09/2022 21:05

3 hours for that is completely normal.

For highlights, cut and blow dry at my hairdressers usually takes about 3.5 hours. Just sitting there without a toddler pulling on me is bliss.

I guess it's how they make any money but yes. I'm sure it never used to be so bad.

DeclansAFeckingDream · 03/09/2022 21:09

Well it's annoying but it wouldn't ruin my day.

Nanny0gg · 03/09/2022 21:09

The foils were on longer than they should have been.

The OP has fine hair and it shouldn't have taken that long to cut

No blow dry

Three hours was too long

Badger1970 · 03/09/2022 21:10

I usually am in there for 2.5 hours or so for highlights, cut and finish. Saturdays are worse as they squeeze so many people in, and I was a bit narked last time that an assistant took my foils off, washed, applied conditioner and then sat me back in the chair for a good 25 minutes before the hairdresser finished her other client.

I absolutely loathe the whole experience..... it's hot, busy and I end up quite ovewhelmed by noise by the time I've come out.

transformandriseup · 03/09/2022 21:11

My hairdressers very small and there is often just me there and it a full head of highlights on my thick hair takes 2.5 hours, so probably around 2 for a half head. It think I would have brought lunch with me if I had an appointment at 11am.

Bagzzz · 03/09/2022 20:36

i hate this because I can’t see properly and can’t wear my glasses (no contact lenses) during most of it. That strains my eyes unless I sit eyes closed for ages. . I have mentioned this on booking but it doesn’t change much.

I understand that it is a way they stay in business though so on the fence on reasonable or not. Maybe when booking they need to be really clear on lemgth of appointment

@Bagzzz

Why can't you wear your glasses? They're only doing your hair!

Holidaydreamingagain · 03/09/2022 21:12

Takes 2 hours for a root tint and blowdry anywhere I’ve been and 3 hours for highlights. Royal pain in the neck but I’m yet to find anywhere who can do it quicker.

Thoughtful2355 · 03/09/2022 21:12

normally takes me 1.5 hour just to get a wash, cut and blow dry.

LimeTwists · 03/09/2022 21:13

Takes me 2.5 hours for half head with cut and 3 for a full head with cut. A bit slow but not massively. Sometimes the colour of highlights comes out too warm if it’s washed out too early.

Shiningstarr · 03/09/2022 21:14

It does seem a long time for fine shoulder length hair. I suspect the hairdresser got caught up with her other client, and left you waiting there for too long.

I'm really surprised you weren't offered a drink though, in fact several drinks. Tea / coffee / soft drink is standard at the salon I go to.

How long have you been going there? Can you try a different salon?

BettyButtercup · 03/09/2022 21:14

I've got a young baby as well, my hairdresser always says she'll take her time so I can enjoy a break from the kids but that's really not relaxing for me! I would much rather she just crack on so I can get home to them. I would be sweating and stressing in your situation.

eclecticalples · 03/09/2022 21:21

3 hours is way too long as you left with wet hair! Mine takes 3 hours but drying, straightening and styling takes a big chunk of that. No drinks offered? Crap salon.

They always ask me to take mine off!

TheClitterati · 03/09/2022 21:23

I get a few colours/foils, cut & blow dry. It takes 3 hours.
