Teachers on Facebook and night out

GreenGreenGrassBlue · 03/09/2022 08:45

I’ve name changed for this, my friend was showing me photos of her children’s SLT (Dep Heads, other teachers) out on a night out in a City. She’s friends with one of the Teachers on Facebook.

There are photos of them enjoying a night out, doing shots etc and this Teacher is friends with a number of parents on Facebook.

AIBU to think it’s probably not appropriate to share these sort of photos on Facebook?

It is titled like a pre back to work night out with a number of parents commenting things like ‘are you ready?’.

Im not saying don’t go out but not sure how appropriate it is for teachers to be sharing like this on Facebook.

Oh FFS

Of course you’re unreasonable.

luckylavender · 03/09/2022 11:56

The teacher bashing on here really really winds me up. I am not a teacher but I know that it's a thankless, stressful, underpaid job. Why the hell shouldn't they have a night out?

adriftabroad · 03/09/2022 11:59

This mumsnet post (which could go elsewhere on a slow news day) is exactly why teachers should not make themselves vulnerable to idiots and pupils on social media.

It is nothing to do with them having a life.

Facebook is not a life.

Another saddo teacher stalking. @GreenGreenGrassBlue You need a new hobby

catsrus · 03/09/2022 12:07

I was a young teacher in the 70's - used to socialise with colleagues - frequently got kids telling me "Miss we saw you out with Sir on Friday night in the [name of pub]". Unless you expect teachers to never socialise with anyone they will be seen out having fun.

The fact the kids (underage so kept out of our sight, little darlings) saw us doesn't mean we did anything wrong. Being seen living your normal life away from school, with your friends, is not something anyone can be responsible for. We didn't go in the pubs owned by parents, but we were still seen and gossiped about.

Underhisi · 03/09/2022 12:17

So normal night out eating and drinking. No photos of them falling over drunk or draped across random people. I don't see what the issue is.

Tbh, even if they had been doing that, there wouldn't have been anything wrong with it. And the photos were posted on private fb accounts.

If I were the OP, I think I'd be letting the teacher know what happened. The problem isn't with the teachers being human but the person who set out to breach confidences and privacy.

BestCatMumEver · 03/09/2022 12:29

Teacher shouldn't be friends with parents on Facebook

The OP isn’t friends with the teacher. The friend is because they know each other in real life.

Why aren't teachers allowed lives? 🙄

Because some parents get the horrors that teachers don't eat sleep and breathe absolute devotion to their little darling, and any idea that this is not happening and the teacher has priorities or a life away from their child centic results in a complaint to Ofsted because clearly the child's education is going to be ruined!! 🤯😭

Going out for drinks is not contentious!!!
Hmm

Exactly this 👍

Because teaching is a female dominated profession and we are held to standards of behaviour that are different to men 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's the crux of it.

StoppinBy · 03/09/2022 13:12

I think her mistake is having parents of her school children as her facebook friends.

Personally I think the photos aren't an issue but think it's unprofessional to have parents on their to see it. Facebook should (IMO) be kept to friends and family only.

LimeTwists · 03/09/2022 13:12

This is just utterly ridiculous. They are teachers, not monks. Are they meant to hide the fact that they have socialise because they should really be indoors doing teachery things such as reading poetry aloud to each other and marking books?

SOME people might think it is though. FGS. Especially for teachers and the like.
Keep social media lives separate from work.
It avoids all the potential problems all of the time.

woodhill · 03/09/2022 13:46

Teachers shouldn't be friends with your dd on Fb if she is a student there.

I generally agree, but life is often not that black and white.

It won't be that unusual for friends of teachers to then go on to have kids at the school. Especially if you live somewhere smaller.

Where did anyone say they shouldn't have a night out? I don't think that's what people are discussing.

But what is acceptable or not shouldn't be determined by what "some people might think". That's not sustainable nor right.

There will always be some people who disagree with something that you do. Some think a teacher drinking is not acceptable. Some don't care but think a teacher smoking is not acceptable. Some don't care about either but think a teacher posting beach holiday pics is not acceptable. There will even be some in a small sub-section of people who think teachers just shouldn't have social media and so being on facebook is unacceptable.

What is acceptable must be governed by a simple absolute standard. Action a = acceptable. Action b = not acceptable.

No but they should be asked if they're OK with the photo going up on FB. Some parents like shit stirring and some pupils like embarrassing teachers. That's just the way it is, and some teachers just don't want the hassle of dealing with this nonsense.

Brefugee · 03/09/2022 13:51

teachers should comment on any parents posting pics of them partying with "oh should you be doing that?"

FFS.

And what about friends ( of maybe many years) who then send their children to your school?

But the shit-stirrers and those attempting to embarrass are the ones in the wrong. They are the ones who should have their behaviour addressed not the victim of the gossip and humiliation attempts.

Shinyandnew1 · 03/09/2022 13:54

Especially for teachers and the like.

Just interested-who do you count as ‘the like’? Who else, other than teachers, shouldn’t be drinking in pubs?
