To dislike afternoon tea?

Watermelonsugarcube · 01/09/2022 17:54

I’ve never had an afternoon tea I’ve enjoyed - can’t work work out whether I’ve just been unlucky and never had a good one, or if they’re always just crap in general.

Admittedly I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so that’s probably skewing my opinion, though I’d like an actual good selection of sandwiches rather than 3 microscopic bits of sarnie with boring fillings.

Then who actually wants to eat 2 scones followed by a massive pile of cakes? The last one I had included cake pops. Cake pops I tell you - is it 2004? Sorry, I digress.

I always feel like I have to eat this massive pile of cake, because I’ve paid for it and am tight, then come away feeling sick from sugar overload. (Not a competitive mumsnet underrating boast btw, I could eat my- considerable- bodyweight in chips etc).

Hardly a shocker that people have different preferences I realise, though I have so many friends and family member who absolutely rave about it - I can’t be the only one!?

It can be a bit disappointing I think.
It's tapped into the ' where can we go with mum or auntie ' market i think ( if they are not into clubbing or pubs or spa days etc!)

LizzieSiddal · 01/09/2022 17:57

Same, I’d much rather eat lots of the little sandwiches than all those cakes. I usually ask for more sandwiches, eat one scone and let the other people with me eat all the cake.

Try a cheese afternoon tea - we had a cheese board, with cheese scones, veggie antipasti followed by cheese cake (obviously that's sweet)

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 01/09/2022 18:09

I'm the same with roast dinners. I went for a savoury afternoon tea once with sandwiches, quiches, pastries etc. And it was far more enjoyable than the sweet focussed ones

I didn’t know this was a thing! Now this I could get on board with!

I love cakes, scones, sandwiches, cream, jam and tea. Yet I can never come away from an "afternoon tea" without feeling nauseous.
I always regret that I didn't just eat the scones.

StoneofDestiny · 01/09/2022 18:12

Had several but do t like them. Too much stodginess at one time. Would rather just have lunch!

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2022 18:14

I agree I'm really not keen and I am not that into scones little cakes are alright but it's all a bit meh. Although I have had a savoury Afternoon tea and that was lovely sandwiches sausage rolls and a few mini quiches !

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/09/2022 18:14

I'm the same OP, although I have had one or two nice ones. There's a place near us does a savoury one with pork pies and scotch eggs and such. I must try it one day.

DreamToNightmare · 01/09/2022 18:15

They’re shit and overpriced.

Adversity · 01/09/2022 18:15

I do my own mainly and have a few savouries like mini quiches and sausage rolls and then scones and some tiny pieces of cake. Seems like you feel compelled to eat it all if you have paid for it in a cafe?

Take a ziplock bag with you and chuck in the cake you don’t want so you dont have too much and save for later.

Thighdentitycrisis · 01/09/2022 18:17

High Tea when I was a kid was things like cheese on toast, a kipper with bread and butter, soft boiled eggs, AND with cake and biscuits and cups of tea

Tuxedokitty · 01/09/2022 18:17

www.reformsocialgrill.co.uk/afternoon-tea/

This one is fab and savoury

RedHelenB · 01/09/2022 18:18

Sometimes they split into ladies and gentleman's teas ( the latter having more savoury options like pork pies)

miltonj · 01/09/2022 18:20

Love it. Champagne and sausage rolls, what's not to love?

JumpNWave · 01/09/2022 18:20

Ooh I love it, but it has to be a really high end one. Posh London hotel. And the scones have to be great.

Mushroo · 01/09/2022 18:23

Completely agree - far too many cakes and I just feel a bit sick. Also it’s usually mid- afternoon and having dinner in the evening feels excessive but not eating I get hungry!

Much prefer. ‘Gentleman’s’ version which usually includes more sausage rolls and cheeses.

EmmaH2022 · 01/09/2022 18:23

I LOVE afternoon tea. Carbs and sugar.

I love a simple ham sandwich too though. So all in all, it's a dream for me!

haven't had one for ages as no one seems to eat sugar anymore.

And it still is, OP is speaking about afternoon tea which generally has sandwiches etc rather than a “main course”

TrueNorthernBird · 01/09/2022 18:25

Totally with you OP. Not a fan of sandwiches (unless I've made them with really good focaccia type bread, pastrami, German cheese, gherkins, mustard, remoulade and rocket) and don't like cake or cream.

Cheeses and red wine I too could get on board with.

londonmummy1966 · 01/09/2022 18:27

Fortnum & Mason do one which is completely savoury - so cheese scones and a selection of post prandial style savouries. Is delicious.

Urgh I’d probably love a gentleman’s afternoon tea, though could never actually order one because the concept of men getting actual food while delicate little pink fancies are the preserve of ladies would fuck me off too much.

At the risk of attracting rage, you know why though?

aSofaNearYou · 01/09/2022 18:32

Well, you don't have a sweet tooth. I do, so I love it!

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 01/09/2022 18:34

I like the concept a lot, but I'm savoury toothed so all the cake doesn't appeal to me much. I found a decent one near me that was much more savoury based though!
