To dislike afternoon tea?

I’ve never had an afternoon tea I’ve enjoyed - can’t work work out whether I’ve just been unlucky and never had a good one, or if they’re always just crap in general.

Admittedly I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so that’s probably skewing my opinion, though I’d like an actual good selection of sandwiches rather than 3 microscopic bits of sarnie with boring fillings.

Then who actually wants to eat 2 scones followed by a massive pile of cakes? The last one I had included cake pops. Cake pops I tell you - is it 2004? Sorry, I digress.

I always feel like I have to eat this massive pile of cake, because I’ve paid for it and am tight, then come away feeling sick from sugar overload. (Not a competitive mumsnet underrating boast btw, I could eat my- considerable- bodyweight in chips etc).

Hardly a shocker that people have different preferences I realise, though I have so many friends and family member who absolutely rave about it - I can’t be the only one!?

I love afternoon tea. Would rather go for champagne afternoon tea on my birthday than a meal at a high end restaurant which I usually find disappointing.

IceStationZebra · 01/09/2022 20:19

The ideal size is 4 sandwiches (so 2 slices of bread, cut to quarters), one scone and one or two small cakes. Perfect.

Take my Mum and Godmother out every month or so for Afternoon tea,but always the one with Proseco
They love it which is the main thing (and the proseco helps massives

For her hen do, a friend of mine had afternoon tea at The Savoy (and I was lucky enough to be invited!). It was exquisite - this was a few years ago, but I remember it well - coronation chicken finger sandwiches, ham and mustard ones too and, I think, egg mayo. Probably smoked salmon. The scones were served with lemon curd as well as strawberry jam and cream, and the little cakes were many and varied. I'm not usually a cake person, but these were lovely (and endless, they filled up the trays again when they looked empty). We had a glass of champagne each, and our choice from the tea menu - I think I had a white tea with rose and something.

Best hen do I've ever been to (we had a river boat trip down the Thames as well).

I went home with a small selection of pastries from the Savoy shop, to share with my aged Dad - happy memories!

I have one booked on Saturday with my teenage daughter. It's a buffet style one in a hotel, so if you're the sort of person who just likes the sandwiches or just likes the scones, you can indulge all you like.

Wizzbangfizz · 01/09/2022 20:23

I don’t like cake so also hate them!

VestaTilley · 01/09/2022 20:49

I much prefer a lunch or dinner at a top restaurant. I’ve had a few afternoon teas at The Wolsey, The Delaunay and a few other places- I think the trick is to go somewhere really good. The high street ones I wouldn’t expect to be that brilliant, or worth the money. It can still be a nice treat in the right place, with very good quality tea if you’re in a hotel with a good view out of the window, etc.

I wouldn’t choose it now though, as I’ve been diagnosed with coeliac disease, and the GF alternative wouldn’t be worth the money, in most cases.

I like tea as a meal - sandwiches or crumpets, a slice of cake and/or a scone. If you have a light lunch and dinner at 7.30pm or so I could easily manage it! But in your own home it’s a) far cheaper and b) you have small amounts - not loads of cakes that you feel obliged to get through because you’ve paid so much.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2022 21:19

Whenever I’ve had one (not often!) I’ve told whoever served us that I much prefer sandwiches to the sweet stuff (especially nice little ones with the crusts cut off) so could I please have a few more.
They’ve always obliged
TBH an afternoon tea is usually quite pricey so you ought to be able to have whatever you prefer.

TheLette · 01/09/2022 21:41

I'm with you. I like cake but afternoon tea is too much. Ridiculously expensive and I feel a bit sick after. I just refuse to pay £70 per head at a London hotel for afternoon tea. I'd much rather enjoy a nice lunch.

VioletCharlotte · 01/09/2022 21:44

I'm with you, all my friends love afternoon tea but I don't really get it. Afternoon tea means missing lunch which means I'm starving and missing dinner as I'm too full up. So I end up just feeling a bit sick from eating nothing but cake and sugar all day. I do like cake, but would rather have a slice of a cake that I like (coffee and walnut or carrot for example), rather than lots of little random cakes. And I don't like cream or Prosecco, so the whole thing is wasted on me really!

KohlaParasaurus · 01/09/2022 21:51

I won't turn my nose up at afternoon tea, but I'd much rather have a full sized sandwich of my own choice and a full sized piece of a cake of my own choice than a load of dainty itty bitty two-bite morsels.

This sounds nice I'd like something like this, hope you and your Dd have a lovely time.

Huntswomanonthemove · 01/09/2022 22:00

Way too much cake for me and sandwiches are pretty boring, so it’s a NO from me.

Watermelonsugarcube · 01/09/2022 22:04

Thanks everyone… the way some people I know bang on about it I felt like I was missing something, but seems I’m not alone!

I was going to say YABU but actually I only like a couple of nice sandwiches and then a scone. Or no sandwiches and 2 scones. No time for the diddy cakes.

You do have to go fairly posh I find.

But when they're good, I like them.

sammysal · 01/09/2022 22:30

Eat the bits you like and ask for take away, but yes agree bit overrated.

modgepodge · 01/09/2022 22:33

SunnyD44 · 01/09/2022 18:40

My issue with them is the timing - mid afternoon. I guess the answer is skip lunch so you’re really hungry but I am always hungry at lunch so have a little something, so then I don’t want a meal at 3pm! If they were served at 12.30 it’s be fine. For mid afternoon it’s far too much food.

I think they are there to replace a meal and not have on top of your normal meals.

If you can’t skip meals for any reason then I would try and have lunch earlier or just have a snack for lunch and a very light dinner.

Or just try and book it around dinner time so that is your meal.

You’re right of course, it is to replace a meal. But they are usually done as a social thing in groups and tend to be arranged for mid afternoon (and some places only serve them for limited times eg 2-5 or whatever). So I’m stuck eating them at the wrong time.

i have no specific reason for being unable to skip meals, other than greediness 😂

ClaryFairchild · 01/09/2022 22:45

I had the most amazing one at Mary Eats Cake in Melbourne. Both the savoury and sweet selections were gorgeous. Sandwiches were the minority.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/09/2022 22:48

Bloody well love an afternoon tea. Our local small hotel does a very traditional one that always comes with plenty of sandwiches per head, small scones with jam and cream, bara brith, then small servings of brownie, carrot cake, cream meringues and eclairs.
Unlimited coffee or tea. £14 pp. No rush to eat and leave.
My sister and I always book for the earliest it starts and take our time so it really is our lunch and dinner.

Our kids aren't fussed and eat off the lunch menu, then have any of the bits I don't fancy as their pudding.

hotdiggetydog · 01/09/2022 22:51

It's not unreasonable to have likes or dislikes about different types of meals.

apintortwo · 01/09/2022 22:53

I love a good afternoon tea

Scones are horrible, aren't they? They're dry and claggy and stick to your teeth. I have no objection to cake though.

That's where the clotted cream comes in...

Thighdentitycrisis · 01/09/2022 18:17

High Tea when I was a kid was things like cheese on toast, a kipper with bread and butter, soft boiled eggs, AND with cake and biscuits and cups of tea

High Tea and Afternoon Tea are two entirely different things.

PinkRiceKrispies · 01/09/2022 23:00

Never had a satisfactory one. Like someone else said, you always feel you want dinner but shouldn't but when you do eat something for dinner, you feel bad for it.

Try a cheese afternoon tea - we had a cheese board, with cheese scones, veggie antipasti followed by cheese cake (obviously that's sweet)

I haven't RTFT (but will). There are CHEESE afternoon teas?!?
