To have Xmas just me and my dog and where should we go?

Doggyxmas · 31/08/2022 18:29

For way too many reasons to go into - I am on my own this Xmas with my dog. I am quite happy about this - but do what to go somewhere nice and cosy where we can have a lovely time.

im thinking not a hotel as I don’t want the risk of any Shirley valentine moments where I’m happily dining alone and people sympathetically ask me to join…

so am thinking a nice cosy cottage with. I’ve views and good walks (but not walks where I will get lost)

am in Kent and and have never been to Norfolk

any one have any suggestions???

thank you!

I did this one year before DH/kids and it was BLISS. Then a few years later I lied to my family about having to work (nurse at the time doing shifts) and did it again just because I wanted another one alone with the dog. I honestly treasure those memories and feel so relaxed when I think about them, fully recommend to anyone for a bit of self care ❤

I have twelve and a half thousand photos of him on my phone. So frankly don’t encourage me…

I hate to rain on the - badly needed - pure content of this post, but you need to ask MN to remove where you've booked... far too much personal info!

I adore your puppers and your plans, and would heartily welcome posts and updates on this and new adventures!

LilyMumsnet · 31/08/2022 20:01

Hi folks!

OP has asked us to remove references to the place she's booked into - so if your post has been deleted, that's why! You haven't broken talk guidelines. Grin

Have a fab time, OP!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/08/2022 20:01

Harry says hello and that he's very jealous as he'd love a cosy Christmas on the coast. 😃

Alfie sends Harry his deepest commiserations. He’s also very concerned that Harry’s pillow may not have been filt fluffed in the correct manner.

No idea about cottages but old Hunstanton beach is fab for dogs....
I was very wary on the seal beach but had a springer spaniel teenager at the time so more bouncy possibly than yours...lots of bird reserves/marshes round there so again tricky if any prey drive/not wanting lead only walks....

Would look near wells next the sea or if infland a bit bircham Newton /holt nice..

Would take thermals/decent windproof coat..... the wind really does come from Siberia ....i have a buffy/snood they are fine but can be pulled up like a scarf but easier to manage in wind! And keep warm

Ive rented cottages through sykes cottages with the dog and theyve been very efficient and good quality

I don't blame you! It sounds just lovely. I'd do it myself in a heartbeat 🥰🐶

If you are heading for the Norfolk Coast, there are a lot of dog friendly pubs and some great walks.

stockpilingallthecheese · 31/08/2022 20:57

Have a look at East Ruston Cottages, they are in Norfolk and really dog friendly with no extra charge for dogs. We absolutely love Norfolk, going a few times this year and have gone just before Christmas with our dogs the last few years. At that time of year the beaches are so quiet, the walks are beautiful and peaceful. Go to one of the farm shops and get yourself loads of gorgeous goodies, chill long beach walks with the dog and chill in front of the TV Smile

Oh another who didn't read the full thread, oops!! Have a great time wherever you've booked, but definitely save the recommendations for another time!

spanielsuzy · 31/08/2022 21:01

I've never been so jealous! Enjoy!

Doggyxmas · 31/08/2022 21:07

Update - we’re going to need somewhere to stay there and on the way back (his highness gets grumpy if we travel for too long) so am definitely going to be looking at some of these other suggestions

ineas actually feeling like a bit of a loser having a doggy solo Xmas but now am feeling all very happy about it 😁🐶

I think you may have booked, but this is a wonderful Pub/Restaurant with B&B that is dog friendly in Norfolk. Friendly people, really nice rooms and amazing food so you do have to book a dinner table when you book in. I stay here when visiting family. www.recruitingsergeant.co.uk

North Norfolk coast.
Or North Northumberland coast ( bracing.)

Thelikelylass · 31/08/2022 21:21

I go away a lot on my own - I relish that wonderful peace with my dog and may meet up with anyone I know in the area but if you have a dog...well that's the best thing there is you don't need to speak to anyone other than the people in the local shop or the dog owners!
I've been to the Lake District, Lancashire, Northumberland and Anglesey just me and the pup. I wish I could spend more time away as it is as good as it gets having that space from home and that utter freedom. Buy you and your dog the best treats you can afford so you don[t have to go out other than to walk him, IMPORTANT make sure you have an enclosed garden so you can let the dog out for a wee at 3am in the rain and make sure there is a log fire.
Norfolk is is nice, Holkam and also lots of great places in Suffolk.
I always use Sykes cottages - booked with them several times and my next one is the lakes with the dog and daughter and a hot tub at New year!

Thelikelylass · 31/08/2022 21:24

ah i see from the mumsnet hq post you've booked! take a nice tablecloth, christmas crackers and lovely food and enjoy!

I presume you weren't living with your family? Might have been a bit difficult to explain why you took your dog with you!

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 01/09/2022 09:14

I have been to Blakeney several times for holidays. Once, alone with dog. I don't have a car but there is a bus that runs from Sheringham to Fakenham by way of the coast which allows dogs and is very useful (you probably have a car though). You can go to Cley and walk up from the village to the sea then along the beach to Blakeney point (quite a long walk) and the seals are just around there. You can hear them calling as you near it and then you might see their heads in the sea near to you. A naturalist on television (probably Bill Oddy) said you can call them by mimicking their doleful calls - yes, it does work. They swim nearer to have a look. Keep dog on a lead as the sea can be quite dangerous.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 01/09/2022 09:16

Sorry, didn't read all 3 pages. HAave a lovely time.

Doggyxmas · 01/09/2022 09:24

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork i don’t have a car actually and am just plotting my journey so this is VERY useful info!!

i played a short video of seals to Alfie this morning - it did not go well 😂 we shall see how we go with the seal watching…

Hes a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

he is the bestest boy

thanks for all the other suggestions too - next year is in fact going to be my year of traveling with him - I’ve got a job that can do from anywhere. I’ve moved us to a small bolt hole place as a base and we’re going to go on adventures from there

so stay tuned 😁

Thanks, I have read really good things about this breed. They sound so lovely, well-behaved and friendly - better than some humans 😂

The National Trust have some lovely cottages to rent, off grid and away from it all.
