AIBU to go to NYC for 2 nights?

I have 4 days off coming up. I've found direct flights from my local airport that leave early in the morning on day 1 and arrive in NYC at lunchtime.

Flight home leaves evening of day 3 and lands home early day 4 morning.

No accommodation to pay for as my SIL stays there and is happy to host me (been loads of times before)

I'd be taking money out of savings to do it.

It's my last chance to go abroad before we buy a house and TTC... should i go? Is it worth the travel/expense for such a short trip?

No way, I went for 4 days and basically by the time I was fully over the jet lag we had to leave again, and we felt in a real rush to see things in those 4 days. We recently went to California and decided it wasn't with going for less than 10 days - although for NY and with no DC I would probably have made it 7 days.

Go go GO!!!! New York is always worth it.

Bigsighall · 31/08/2022 18:46

Yeah I did it. Didn’t sleep so made the most of it! Was great fun, do it!!

Motnight · 31/08/2022 18:47

Did this about 4 years ago. It was a fantastic 2 days!

SunshineClouds1 · 31/08/2022 18:48

New York is worth it.
Do it

Livinginanotherworld · 31/08/2022 18:49

Hell yes !

ChocolateHelps · 31/08/2022 18:50

Ooh what about dubrovnik? 2 1/2hr flight, 1hr time difference. Half hour from airport to dubrovnik old town. Lots of tourist things to do - my favourite was an eating / drinking evening walking tour. There's lots of boat trips. Gorgeous clear sea. Amazing restaurants and lots of history

TreacsPotNoodle · 31/08/2022 18:54

Amsterdam, Stockholm, Barcelona, Lisbon, Paris? There's so many European options! I think you'd waste the first day in New York feeling knackered from the travel.

tttigress · 31/08/2022 18:57

Go for it, if I did that though (late 40s), I would probably die the exhaustion!

Make the most of being young.

notimagain · 31/08/2022 18:58

Sirzy · 31/08/2022 18:38

Surely you would be too tired from the travel to enjoy it?

i would look for somewhere closer

Depends on the individual.

I think many people find the morning departures ( assuming from UK/Europe) to the US eastern seaboard are actually one of the easier ones to handle from a time change POV, arriving lunch time NY time/ tea time on their body clock means it is fairly easy to press/keep going despite any tiredness on a bit on the arrival day for a few hours after landing by site seeing/being sociable.

Body clocks being what they are you'll then almost inevitably be awake early NY time on day 2 but you're still good to go.

I used to a bit of this sort of thing (though usually only for 1 night at the boss's behest) and it's the later departures out of UK/Europe that get you into the States late evening or early AM "body time" that can be pretty horrid and leave you feeling trashed when you arrive.

In answer to the Ops question I'd go for it.

Rockbird · 31/08/2022 19:01

Go for it. I haven't flown for 12 years so you can have my carbon footprint allowance too Wink I wish I could go!

Glorieta · 31/08/2022 19:01

Do it!!!!!

Not quite the same but fed up with boss calling me on my day offi went to Paris for lunch one day.

7am flight to Beauvais
Bus then metro
Breakfast in champs elysees
Boat trip
Late lunch in Au chien qui fume
Quick cocktail at the hyatt regency in Porte Miller then 10m flight from Beauvais

Next day when asked why I didn't answer his calls I explained I had gone to Paris so.was busy......boss's jaw dropped and he never called me on my day off again.

Calyco · 31/08/2022 19:03

YABU

You need more time.

TheGlitterFairy · 31/08/2022 19:03

Go for it and enjoy! I spent a night in the States once - east coast - and flew back the next afternoon 😂

Snowpaw · 31/08/2022 19:04

Its a lot of jet lag for two days - I don't think I would do it. You need a day either end to acclimatise to the time change I think. 4 or 5 night trip I think is perfect for NYC

TheGlitterFairy · 31/08/2022 19:05

@Glorieta I’ve always fancied going to Paris for the day too! Must put that back on my list!

PugInTheHouse · 31/08/2022 19:05

I would, DH and I did it when I was 6 month pregnant, we had about 4 hrs sleep in total and ate on the go but it was amazing and we fitted loads in. We have done other longer trips before and after but it was a really special one!

PugInTheHouse · 31/08/2022 19:06

Was tired the day after but that was it, I dosed off and DS1 (18 months) painted my lounge red with nail varnish whilst I was asleep. I never get jet lag for those sorts of journeys, Vegas ruins me though!

Glorieta · 31/08/2022 19:07

@TheGlitterFairy it was back in the day when we got a return on Ryanair for £25 return as there were no airport taxes.
It was February so cold but bright and not too busy.

Would do it again in a heartbeat

Notreallyhappy · 31/08/2022 19:09

Go go go!!!! If your not tied to family etc just enjoy yourself.

bloomflower · 31/08/2022 19:10

recently back, I honestly think it's not worth it for such a short amount of time. Save your money and go for longer, or go somewhere closer!!

HipposHaveNipples · 31/08/2022 19:12

notanothertakeaway · 31/08/2022 18:27

That's quite a carbon footprint for a short trip. I dont think I would do that, TBH

The planes will be flying whether or not the OP is on them, unless she's planning to fly by private jet.

Would you seriously not go abroad because of your carbon footprint? There are far worse contributions to climate change to worry about than an individual going abroad even a few times a year.

OperaStation · 31/08/2022 19:34

underneaththeash · 31/08/2022 17:57

How much do you fly? I'd worry about the carbon footprint if you travel a lot.

This.

I plan to save flying for occasional really big trips. I couldn’t justify the huge amount of carbon for just 2 days in NYC.

🤦🏻‍♀️

Fortunately not everyone thinks like you.

Planes fly so long as there is demand. If people choose to stop flying because of the very real impact of global warming then fewer planes will take off. They don’t fly if they’re empty.

Yes, I'd seriously not go because of the carbon footprint, wouldn't even consider it.

I'm not going to judge anyone else's choices but I could never justify it for myself.
