Aibu to think the threads on not heating your house due to the "I only sleep with a thin cotton sheet with my bedroom wide open and I'm still red hot in the middle of winter " is going the same way?

OP posts:
richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse · 31/08/2022 12:13

Surely that should be goat meat if you're a council tenant?

RaRaRaspoutine · 31/08/2022 12:29

Hahaha yes! I sleep on a block of ice in my underwear and never feel the cold.

JohnsShirt · 31/08/2022 12:30

Absolutely, and I bet most of it is bollocks

Bubblebubblebah · 31/08/2022 12:30

Totally

Catch21 · 31/08/2022 12:32

If only the energy crisis stops the posters who say "I wash towels after every use and hoover three times a day" then that will be a tiny positive.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/08/2022 12:47

Sadly I'm not sure that it will @Catch21. There's already someone on the how long can you go without vacuuming thread saying she'd rather 'sit in a cold house and never eat a warm meal again that cut down on the hoovering' Shock.

Talk about warped priorities. See also those who use tumble dryers even when they can line dry and the weather is good.

But we're genuinely not cold at night without heating, have the window open most of the year and the thickest duvet we have is 4.5 tog in winter and 1 tog or an empty duvet cover in summer.

The 'I need the heating on all night and sleep in 2 pairs of fleece pyjamas under a 15 tog Hungarian goose down duvet' or else I'm cold crew bring me out in a sweat just thinking about it. I wouldn't need that amount of bedding if I slept out on the lawn in the middle of winter.

SkankingWombat · 31/08/2022 14:40

Are these posts not mostly people just sharing their views though, rather than competing for some mystery prize? I work in people's homes and there is a bigger variation in lifestyles than I would previously have believed, with a significant minority of households on the extremes. Some people's homes are ovens (to the point I'm sweating before I've even started to work) with the occupants wearing thick jumpers and slippers, whilst others really do have the windows open all year and are sat in a T-shirt and shorts. I can well believe some wash towels daily whilst others go months between changing their bed linen because I have seen extreme levels of housekeeping at both ends of the spectrum (and across all socio-economic groups). I can quite honestly say I can get 3 meals plus stock from a whole chicken without it feeling frugal, but that's perhaps because I was raised by my single parent DM. She was born when rationing was still in force and, thanks to my F and his lack of child support, we were very poor for a good part of my childhood. I was brought up heavily bulking out meat with veg and pulses.

BarbaraofSeville I like to think perhaps the hoover poster, like me, vacuums so infrequently they genuinely cannot cut back much more? 🤷🏻‍♀️😬

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/08/2022 14:43

The poster on the vacuuming thread who does it SEVERAL times a day?

And yes, I'm a window open in the winter type but I have a bloody good wool duvet and extra quilts.

Bestcatmum · 31/08/2022 14:51

I don't know how my parents are going to manage with the bill increases they have their house on tropical heat night and day. Last time I stayed there I was tempted to make a hammock out of my sheet and afix it out of the window to sleep on. If I could have opened the window, the windows and doors are locked shut with no keys to be found. It's like Riker's island.

HeartofTeFiti · 31/08/2022 14:54

I agree OP! “My heating is on for 5minutes in the morning but I’ve wrapped my house in tin foil and it’s toasty all day.”

I almost feel ashamed to say I like feeling warm now

having said that, I’m excellent at making a chicken stretch so perhaps I can keep up with cold air fanatics if I work at it…

theDudesmummy · 31/08/2022 15:10

My posts where I say I cannot have heating on at night are about my menopause, not the energy crisis! I now get unreasonably irritable with people who want to be warm, just because I cannot stand it! My 29-year-old DD was visiting last week and she went around with a jumper and thick leggings on the whole time, despite me constantly being in t-shirts and shorts. She wanted the heating on, while I sat in my office with all the windows open and a fan blowing. I just felt (very unreasonably I know) irked all the time! It's a moan, not a boast, when it is from me anyway!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/08/2022 15:34

I think these stretch quick a long way.

Agreed!

Another menopausal hot mess - I sleep with the window open all year round - it has to be well below freezing before I shut it and I prefer my showers cold. DC are less keen.

On the chicken front I always buy a large one (small ones are a false economy) and can get a roast, a curry, a pasta salad and a stir fry for four plus stock. Again, a mother who grew up with rationing and eked meat out a very long way with veg from the garden.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 31/08/2022 15:37

Spot on OP 🤣 also frigging merino base layers are mentioned on every thread

and buying second hand ‘Scandi’ outerwear for children. In reality most kids have a Sainsburys or Tescos coat that costs £15

DancingBudgie · 31/08/2022 15:39

I wouldn't imagine that a chicken would stretch very far before something pops off.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 31/08/2022 15:43

I'm lucky if it lasts until dinner with ds2 about, he's off to uni soon though and I'm hoping I can get 2 meals a day for 3 days out of one then 😅

How? No really. A roast for four is two legs and a breast, depending on the people. OK maybe you give half a breast and half a leg. So that leaves half a chicken for a curry, salad and stir fry? Unless those are essentially vegetarian with a tiny tiny hint of chicken, it bollocks. I'd rather have actual vegetarian than play 'hunt the meat'.

In my house of three we manage a roast, a curry and stock. But not two meals on top of that! DD eats a lot and DH is tall and weight lifts.

Doubleraspberry · 31/08/2022 15:47

I'm thinking rubber chicken, particularly as seen in The Muppets.

My father in law is all over Facebook wanging on about how people these days don't know they're born, and how houses were always unheated until the coal fire went on in January. Obviously he heats his house to 23 degrees nine months a year now, to the extent that when we've spent Christmas there, we've taken summer clothes with us to make it bearable. And spends his Winter Fuel Payment on flights to Majorca for a January break.

I do often think that it would just be ao much better to use more chicken in fewer dishes than 50g in many. You would get better protein from eggs in salads or stir-fry in this case.

See , I'm menopausal but I have my hot flushes, push off the covers then start to get cold again once I cool down

OP posts:
Nidan2Sandan · 31/08/2022 19:13

I need my bedroom as cold as possible. In winter I have a 15tog duvet and being under that all snug with a cold bedroom to cool the feet I inevitably stick out the duvet is bliss.

Chicken, we buy an extra large one and will get a roast for 4 and maybe a curry for 4 out of it. The cats will also get a small helping.

I’m intrigued too, genuinely interested! From an extra large chicken, I’d get enough meat for a roast for 4 (2 legs and half a breast each if I carve it nicely enough). That leaves one breast and the scrappy bits which would do a couple of sandwiches and a stir fry for 4. No way would I get a curry and salad out of it too.

Same. I do literally sleep on a block of ice - I take frozen water bottles to bed and have several fans on and sleep with just a sheet no duvet. I used to feel the cold all the time, now I never feel the cold since going through the menopause

JudgeJ · 31/08/2022 22:38

Will we still be able to afford to roast the said chicken?
