to think that you donot need to warm your van up for twenty mins at 6am

the bloke that lives over the road from me works for a well known gas fitting compnay and every bloody morning between the hours of six and eight warms his extremely noisy van up (waking myslef and my kids every morning)

now if he actually needed to warm it up i would not have a prob with this but it's diesel (which dh says doesnlt need warming up, i have no idea) and he isnlt even in the van he ges back into the house and has a coffee or whatever, it's always for 15 mins and he does it in the summer too which is worse if you have the window open

just really winds me up that's all they have a small child too you would think they would be more considerate

Perhaps you should point out to him that if he leaves it running and it gets nicked his insurance is void - im sure the well known gas company would be VERY happy about that.

Enid · 22/01/2008 13:04

i need to run my car for 20 mins as it got damp and now the inside windscreen is steamed up in the mronging

bossybritches · 22/01/2008 13:06

Fair enough on cold freezing mornings (warms the cat up & defrosts the windows )but not often really that's needed, especially not
in summer!!!

Wouldn't mind after 7 o'clock but 6 am is a bit rich!!

YANBU

thequietone · 22/01/2008 13:08

Just reading that makes my blood boil. Guy opposite us used to do that, turn the engine on and finish breakfast inside. Once your ear tunes into it it's impossible to sleep. My sympathies...

choosyfloosy · 22/01/2008 13:09

YAtotallyNBU

i hate hate hate this

what is this 'warming up' of which you speak

defrosting the windows can be done perfectly well with a defunct loyalty card and a cloth

unbelievable

Is it parked on the street when he starts the engine? If it is i'm sure I recentley read that it is illegal to leave a car unattended and running, health a nd safety etc... he is being inconsiderate and YANBU.

Enid · 22/01/2008 13:18

no its not warming up of windows - ice

it is demisting the insides of the windscreen

I cant see unless I run the engine for 20 mins

OrmIrian · 22/01/2008 13:21

DH goes out to work at 5.30 am atm. So sorry, my sympathies are all for whoever shares gas-fitter's bed ....

sagitta · 22/01/2008 13:22

Just use a cloth...

Enid · 22/01/2008 13:24

no that leaves smears

Enid · 22/01/2008 13:24

anyway other people not an issue as we have no neighbours

Monkeytrousers · 22/01/2008 13:25

Just tell him - ask him - be nice and he should be reasonable

choosyfloosy · 22/01/2008 13:25

a few smears versus waking up the street and using £X of fuel.....? i'd still go with the cloth, sorry

Oliveoil · 22/01/2008 13:26

I have to sit in our old jalopy for 10 mins to demist the windscreen

this is at 8.30am though

bananaknickers · 22/01/2008 13:26

My next door neigbour used to do this too. I could quite happily have stuck a pitch fork up her arse- really annoying!

quint · 22/01/2008 13:31

YANBU - bloody inconsiderate - use a cloth, get a decent one it doesn;t leave smears

SpottyHamster · 22/01/2008 13:42

YANBU- cannot understand why he is doing this. Personally i am a wimp & would just put up with it. My neighbour uses his car as a home office & sits in it for hours on the driveway with the engine running to keep (him) warm! Not particularly noisy, but v bad for the environment. Think he wants some peace & quiet as his wife is a childminder.

worzsel · 22/01/2008 15:07

thank god my neighbour doesnt have a car i think i'd have to kill him if he did this !

mustsleep · 22/01/2008 19:27

i think that he is aware that it bugs me last summer every morning i would get up make sure he was looking at me and give him a dirty look whilst slamming the window....arsehole

may just phone that compnay and mention it to them

no it is on his driveway that it's running, dh reckons that he must get paid from when he switches the thing on

have just found out i am pregnant again and if he wakes up my new born whilst doing it i will not be held accountable for my actions both my others have been colicky and once sleep deproved i know not what i do!!

quint · 24/01/2008 21:11

Remember he's a man - they don;t take hints.

He probably just thought you were grumpy every morning last summer, nothing to do with him - what could he have possibly done!

If you want him to know it bugs you, I'm afraid you're gonna have to bite the bullet and tell him. Good luck!

nametaken · 24/01/2008 21:16

It is illegal. Ask him nicely and if this fails then inform the police and his employers.

And if you still don't get any joy, inform the local criminals where they can acquire a free van at 6am any morning

lucyellensmum · 24/01/2008 21:56

I always thought it was diesels that you had to warm up. I could well be wrong. But even so 20 minutes, that is excessive. I hate this too. We have an extremely noisy van that picks someone up outside our house (actually i think they gone now but so) and would sit in road engine running, radio blaring at 5am!!! Luckily for him this was pre baby, else he would have found a banana in his exhaust pipe

Poledra · 24/01/2008 22:11

You don't need to warm up diesels like this. I have a diesel car, and you turn the key to the first 'click' and wait for the coil to heat up (little orange light on the dashboard, completely noise free), then you start the engine and it goes first time - voila! Still sounds a bit like a tractor when you pull away mind, but at least it's only for a couple of minutes

lucyellensmum · 24/01/2008 22:28

I knew that poledra - well, clearly i didnt, but as soon as i read your post i remembered DP telling me the same.
