People in Council houses should be reassessed…

I want to tread carefully. But then again I’m pissed off.

I live in a 3 bed house with a mortgage. On our estate there is a selection of Council houses. I have no issue with people having Council homes, people fall on hard times and DESERVE support.

however what really grinds my gears, is on our estate we have one Council house which have 2 brand new Audi’s. Top of the range. Just got back off holiday to Florida. Weekends away. they pay £350 a month to the council for this 4 bed property. (They are very loud about telling everyone this)

it really really winds me up. We have a COST of living crisis, people are going to be struggling to pay bills but yet there are people who are in these Council houses on holidays and brand new cars.

it doesn’t seem fair. Surely Council houses need to be regularly means tested… How can this happen? Able to afford 2 brand new cars but cannot afford to pay their own rent/mortgage!

or am I just being a moany witch!

And a goat @TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael Don't forget the goat.

And your goat gets replaced every year for free too

I have never had a goat 😢

I've never had a goat either Sad

I completely agree. I know three families who are completely open about it. That they pay a small amount of rent, have new under floor heating installed by council, new bathroom and kitchen. Holidays and trainers. How is this allowed to go on for so many years?

Indeed. HOW are they allowed to have SHOES!? They should be barefoot in the street like the peasants they are.
Shocked I tell ya.

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 31/08/2022 13:57

Holidays and trainers? Absolute bastards. That they think they have the right to wear TRAINERS that are paid for by hard working TAX PAYERS. I'd shoot them in the street if I had my way.

KatiefromHull · 31/08/2022 13:58

I’m really confused - you do understand OP that council housing isn’t something that is only something u can apply for if u are ‘in need of support’ . They’ve made their life choices, like you’ve made yours. You’re just gutted you think they’ve ended up better off.

LBFseBrom · 31/08/2022 14:05

Sour grapes. We all make choices. Think on this, when your neighbours are old they won't be able to let or sell their home to pay for any care they might need.

Good luck to them. We all make choices. It's likely that when they were younger they didn't qualify for a big enough mortgage to buy, they obtained a decent council house and have been happy to stay but they might buy somewhere in future, even the council house in which they live.

They'd do well not to advertise their financial business but they are probably just sharing and have no idea anyone would resent them for it.

Get over it.

They should only be allowed the BARE MINIMUM one set of clothes for Sunday best and one set of ordinary clothes ,the bare faced cheek of having holidays and trainers!

Clothes? CLOTHES??
God above, you'll be wanting a bar if soap to wash with next!!
You should have a choice of two flour sacks and be grateful.
Clothes indeed!

The housing isn't in short supply everywhere either. Here it's a choice based letting system where you pick up to three properties each week that you want to be considered for. Out of all the people who have registered a 'bid' for each property the housing team look at who has priority for it, this might not always be the person at the front of the line, for example in our parish priority is given to people with a local connection so if I bid and was 2nd and Johnny From-Away bid and was 1st I would get it because I have a connection to parish and he doesn't. If two people are tied for priority then it goes to whichever one has been on the housing register the longest. They get to view the property and say yes or no. If they say no then the process is repeated for the next in line until someone takes it.

The bands are Priority which is urgent need (e.g., homeless or about to be homeless), Band A, Band B, Band C which are all a decreasing rate of need until finally Band D which is low need (e.g., currently adequately housed).

I bid for three months for our first property and turned down two that I'd bid on but that weren't suitable when we viewed them, accepted the third property. We weren't in a priority band, we were Band B and applied as part of a general house search when our crappy private landlord gave us notice. When we reapplied to move to a larger property we waited six months, we were Band A that time but needed a specific type of property in a specific parish so were selective about which ones we bid on which is why it took six months.

You lot have been busy, just got back from Waitrose shopping. Off to feed the kids and goats later.

Newrumpus · 31/08/2022 14:56

@TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael

The red-faced spitting gammons in the DM comments all agree with each other too...is that what you're aspiring to?

Absolutely no need for this.

Ledwood85 · 31/08/2022 15:13

Missing the point of the thread, but I'm impressed by OP's ability to determine a top of the range Audi, vs. a middle of the range one.

Must have a keen eye to easily assess all of the different options and packages without seeing the invoice.

Reminds me of a letter in Viz years ago about a homeless man who, after a day's begging, went back to his car - a "gold-plated Rolls-Royce! With mink seats!"

DancingBudgie · 31/08/2022 15:21

New kitchens, new bathrooms, underfloor heating, holidays, top banana Audi's, trainers and clothes.
Where do I sign up for one of these council houses? I fancy living the high life too!

Waitrose 😲
I suppose living almost rent free gives you aspirations of middle class living.
< Stomps over to the mail to complain >

mycatisannoying · 31/08/2022 15:27

Of course you're not being unreasonable. The whole thing's a bloody joke, and your neighbours are laughing all the way to the bank.

MasterBeth · 31/08/2022 15:30

Don't blame the tenants, blame the government for not allowing enough council housing.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 31/08/2022 16:13

DubLynn · 30/08/2022 20:57

I agree. Council houses should be for people in times of need. If you've two brand new Audis on your driveway then your hour of need is well and truly over.

I also think older people should be moved on to smaller accommodation when their families are reared so another family can benefit from the council house. However i know there's a shortage of this type of pensioner style housing and people generally want to stay in their communities:

No. There SHOULD be enough council housing to go around for everyone who needs/wants it.
Like there used to be.

InChocolateWeTrust · 31/08/2022 16:50

Mistygreenandblue

Where's the money supposed to come from to subsidise housing for people who can afford to pay market rent?

InChocolateWeTrust · 31/08/2022 16:51

Or I suppose we could all just live for free off that goose the bank of england has tucked away. You know the one - lays golden eggs.
