People in Council houses should be reassessed…

I want to tread carefully. But then again I’m pissed off.

I live in a 3 bed house with a mortgage. On our estate there is a selection of Council houses. I have no issue with people having Council homes, people fall on hard times and DESERVE support.

however what really grinds my gears, is on our estate we have one Council house which have 2 brand new Audi’s. Top of the range. Just got back off holiday to Florida. Weekends away. they pay £350 a month to the council for this 4 bed property. (They are very loud about telling everyone this)

it really really winds me up. We have a COST of living crisis, people are going to be struggling to pay bills but yet there are people who are in these Council houses on holidays and brand new cars.

it doesn’t seem fair. Surely Council houses need to be regularly means tested… How can this happen? Able to afford 2 brand new cars but cannot afford to pay their own rent/mortgage!

or am I just being a moany witch!

It's so repetitive, same thread started every few weeks ,it's always, free houses ,subsidised rent, people should move out of secure homes and private rent etc etc .

It is and it always attracts the thick twats who want everyone suffering equally. If one person leaves being less thick then job done.

SH isn't a government issue benefit paid for by the taxpayers. No matter how much people bleep on.
What it is, is a secure tenancy with a fair rent. This is what the country should be aspiring too in the rental market.

(Why a goat? What do you do with a goat?)

It's from an old MN thread of yesteryear about council houses and their tenants. Apparently they all kept goats in their gardens 😂

richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse · 31/08/2022 11:14

Thanks for the explanation 🤣🤣🤣

Again in many areas social rent is comparable to private rent and seriously why would anyone give up their secure tenancy and throw themselves on the mercy of a private landlord ,just because posters on mumsnet think they should?

And if it isn't? Sounds like in this area, £350 is a bargain. And I don't know anywhere in my area with £350 for private rentals, especially for a 4 bedroom house. More like 4-5 times that. And I don't live in a decent place.

You think someone should continue scamming the system when they don't need it? Keeping a house from people who do?

I have a small field, that has many goats in it. I charge £10 a day per goat. I'm raking it in, as a side line Grin Does that mean I have to move out my HA house?

God no. You're a proper council house dweller, not a pretend one with fancy cars.
I hope you keep your coal in the bath for authentic appearances.

richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse · 31/08/2022 11:16

How is it scamming the system to pay your rent on time every month for a house you have been lawfully allocated under the council's allocation policy?

Apparently the council provide the goat with the keys 😁

Nobody is scamming the system ,and I also don't know any houses with four bedrooms with rent of £350, even in my cheap comparable social/ private rent area I pay more than that for a two bed house .

Whataday247 · 31/08/2022 11:19

Yes, YABU. I lIve in a council house with DH, we both work full time but can’t afford to save for deposit to buy while renting and have no help via family and no inheritance, although we could afford the monthly payments. We have holidays, both have a new cars and nice things. We would rather have a mortgage.

Whataday247 · 31/08/2022 11:21

@AlwaysAnnoyed you sound jealous of your neighbours. If you can’t afford nice things maybe increase hours at work, look for a higher paid job, downside so mortgage payments are less? Just a few ideas

Because clearly if you can afford anything more than a motorised wheelbarrow to transport your family around in, and wear anything other than old flour sacks, then you're not poor enough and should therefore give up your council house to someone who does.
Do you know nuffink?? 😉

Longleggedgiraffe · 31/08/2022 11:25

How is it by any stretch of the imagination, YOUR business how much money the Council tenants are spending on whatever? They’re not just for less well-off people. Sheesh! As long as they’re not doing any harm, leave them alone.

Nsky62 · 31/08/2022 11:26

Folk have windfalls does that make less than you
one of dearest friends had a house, lost by her husband’s accident, second mortgage repossessed, house unsuitable to be adaptable

MissPankhurst · 31/08/2022 11:10

@AlwaysAnnoyed Two thirds of people who have voted agree with you so it's safe to say that most of those who are berating your stance in the comments are a vocal minority.

I would take an educated guess that those two thirds of people who agree, have never lived in social housing or have any idea how it actually works.

richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse · 31/08/2022 11:30

You can't take an educated guess @x2boys You're a council tenant. That means your thick remember.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 31/08/2022 11:52

They'll be paying rent long after your mortgage is paid off.

Unless they die young.

FarmerRefuted · 31/08/2022 12:02

Not only did I live in a council house, I moved from my council house into a bigger council house that had an additional bedroom compared to my previous one. Getting a new kitchen next year as my current one is approaching the point of knackered. Got an email yesterday that the council are also checking and redoing everyone's insulation to try help their tenants reduce their energy bills and improve efficiency. Roof is due to be replaced next year too unless it blows away.

DH works FT, I'm a carer and a PT student, we pay full rent.

Suck it.

Since I've been in my HA, nearly 20 yrs. New back and front door, new windows, new kitchen, bathroom was done a few weeks ago.

65% of voters agree with me.

They probably read and understood my post unlike @richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse @x2boys who have tried to make out I’m some Council house hater to fit their own narrative. who have continuously tried to tear me down because I have a difference in opinion.

Some peoples financial situations change THUS resulting in a review of their council house. That’s all I’m saying.

like a PP said they know someone who earns 170k a year but won’t give up their Council house. But that’ll just be classed as a lie by those with their own agenda.

@richcouncilhousetenantfreehouse @x2boys not everything in this world is a personal attack on you. Just because you don’t agree with something doesn’t mean you need to be nasty.

I agree with you. Either it should be need based (therefore reassessed) or its open to everyone on a waiting list basis or who offers the most basis like private rent. Or private rentals need the rent caps and security that social housing provides.
