September

Hi everyone,
I was talking to my mum earlier about how September is coming up and she said she didn’t want to think about it. Apparently, she doesn’t like September as it’s a downward slope into winter (which she says is even worse).
I love September and always have. I find the weather can be lovely as it’s never too hot but you can get away without a hoodie midday if the suns out. I find it seems to bring a sense of calm on the house and I love to give it a really deep clean ready for the winter months ahead. I don’t have school aged children so maybe that’s why I like it but I find September a really nice month (and it’s a great time to go abroad as prices are down and the pools are still warm etc from the summer).
What does everyone else think about September? Am I the only one who likes it?

Also just to add I know this isn’t really AIBU but I didn’t know where else to put it!

I love the golden days and cool nights.

girlfrien · 31/08/2022 09:52

I prefer the main Summer months. september feels abit sad as you know Summers over. It can still be nice and warm weather wise though.
Now October that's depressing.

Sidisawetlettuce · 31/08/2022 09:56

Since retiring from teaching, I absolutely love September.

DecorateTheTree · 31/08/2022 10:02

Sept-Mar is heavenly. Rather wear jacket hat and gloves than bake to death from May -Aug.
theres Christmas 🎅🏼, it’s chilly, nights draw in. Wonderful.

Applebark · 31/08/2022 10:06

We always go camping in September when the kids have gone back to school so its a bit quieter. Lovely sunny days with misty mornings. Autumn equinox is my favourite time of year.

Zippedydoo123 · 31/08/2022 10:09

Autumn is a delightful season. The leaves look so pretty all the different colours. We need to be thankful we don't live in countries where there are only two seasons as it feels so samey.

Monday55 · 31/08/2022 10:14

First 3 weeks of Sept are still considered summer. I'd say Oct is the downward slop into winter.

bombombo · 31/08/2022 10:15

I love September, it's my favourite month! Love the feeling of the seasons being just about to change.

I love it.

I love the slight decrease in temperatures, bringing sunny, bright days without unbearable heat. I love the change in the leaves. I love the feeling of a new start that I somehow carry within me from school days, when my mum would take me to the stationary shop to buy a new pencil case or a lunchbox, and I'd get to see my friends again after the long summer holiday. I love the (no doubt illusory) promise of new and better habits that come from the chance of a new beginning- this year I'm going to try to go running again & read more. I love the evenings being slightly earlier, meaning it's almost dark when my kids go to bed (and there's less frolicking as a result). I also love- LOVE- the fact that it's getting slightly darker in the mornings and our toddler is sleeping later. I love my daughter's excitement at her "massive" new bits of school dresses. I love the long, slow approach to autumn proper, and puddle jumping, and leaf kicking, and Halloween, and Bonfire Night, and chocolate bananas and jacket potatoes and marshmallows. And Christmas.

So basically yeah it's quite good I reckon

This is the perfect description!

September is lovely. Just when you think its all over, along she comes with her unexpected warmth and sunshine, easing you in gently to the winter.
Much less fond of October to December. Snivelling support acts to the real devil that is January, and its pointless little hanger on, February.

BusySittingDown · 31/08/2022 10:21

There's another thread, currently in Active, about loving September too.

I like it...it's my birth month, the kids beggar off back to school and <<ducks to avoid flying objects>> it feels like the start of the countdown to Christmas. I love Autumn.

I don't think Greenday like it though.Sad

Mochudubh · 31/08/2022 10:23

I switched to thinking in the Celtic calendar a couple of years ago which essentially starts each season a month earlier so Autumn starts in August and finishes with Samhain (Halloween). November is the start of winter, which makes sense to me as it's a cold , driech month but you have Christmas/New Year to look forward to and only 2 months till Spring starts in February. May is the beginning of Summer and often when the best weather is in Scotland🙂

Yes, I particularly hate January for the same reason he hates September. Even years later the association is very strong.

Greenpolkadot · 31/08/2022 10:30

I love September too.
I love the changing colours of the trees, blackberry picking ....crunchy leaves underfoot , ..preparing for Christmas begins for some.
It's my birthday on Friday, maybe that adds to my love of autumn

Oysterbabe · 31/08/2022 10:36

I love September. I love the weather, the kids are excited about going back to school and I'm excited about having one day a week to myself. My youngest is starting school and I'm sticking with working 4 days. I'm actually almost delirious with excitement to be more accurate. I've been looking forward to it for about 2 years.

arewe · 31/08/2022 10:41

I love September! For the same reasons you do and also have school-age DCs, who go back to school and I have more time for myself Smile
My mum's birthday is in September and I can not remember a year when it was bad weather on her birthday.
I love balmy and gentle days!

maddiemookins16mum · 31/08/2022 10:47

I agree with your Mum, it’s already dark now by 8.30pm at the latest.
Roll on April, my favourite month.

KyaClark · 31/08/2022 10:52

I'm the opposite to your mum.

I love September as it's the upward climb toward Christmas for me.

I already feel so much happier than I do in the run up to summer.

wantmorenow · 31/08/2022 11:06

Used to love the changing colours and conker collecting etc.

Now I'm a teacher, I hate it. Says everything about my job unfortunately.

Angelicapickles1 · 31/08/2022 11:08

I prefer September. I love Autumn with Halloween, pumpkin picking, Fireworks and then it's my birthday.
I sleep better as my body naturally starts to slow down at 8pm when it goes dark.
I don't like Jan - March except for Pancake day lol and in the past experienced SAD in those months.

dudsville · 31/08/2022 11:09

I love all the weather and every month feels special to me, September is definitely in my top 12!

Wheresmysewjo · 31/08/2022 11:14

I hate it too. Towards the end of August the sun suddenly seems to change colour and the light feels different, paler. The mornings are cooler and the evenings draw in more quickly.

I get an irrational sense of sadness, like the end is coming.

I love spring and summer for the feeling of hope.

AuntieMarys · 31/08/2022 11:16

Best month for me. Schools are back and weather usually lovely. Its the start of a new year in my mind

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2022 11:17

I didn’t like it when I was a kid because of back to school gloom, summer being over etc. I do like it now because it’s my wedding anniversary month.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/08/2022 11:33

I like September. As much as I love the warmer, lighter half of the year, July/ August can end up with that heavy heat and nature sort of stagnates. September's like a fresh, short-lived second wind of energy that can on a good year continue into October. It's the academic new year and it's nice to restore routines after the summer break.

November and January can piss right off. At least in December, Christmas is a distraction and it doesn't get worse than the 21st. February at least has light at 5pm and snowdrops and crocuses poking through, a bit of punctuation with Valentines/ pancakes, and is mercifully short.
I like having seasonal change, but winter's just too long!
