To be shocked and appalled by music video by rapper "AarDee" (and also shocked that there doesn't seem to be any backlash that I can find?

OK, so my world would never normally intersect with the world of heavy UK teen rap (or whatever the correct name is for the genre), but I was with my DS at a barber shop today, a trendy one where they show the latest music videos, and while his hair was being cut I happened to see the video to a song called Hello Mate by this guy AarDee (Googling him I see he is 19 and comes from Brighton).

I am very far from prudish or pearl-clutching, was a pretty counter-culture heavy rocker in my day etc. I've seen and done a lot. I am not easily shocked and am strongly in favour of freedom of expression. But: this video has to be seen to be believed. Unless I am mistaken and I was watching some sort of elaborate piss-take, it depicts a couple (AarDee and a girl) going into a shop with a baseball bat and gaffer tape, terrorising and tying up the staff, wrecking the shop, stealing stuff including lots of booze and then retreating to a mansion to celebrate merrily with a huge pool party. The main dude "AarDee" has a constant arrogant and self-satisfied look on his face.

Now, I am sure many people would agree that this guy is probably an arrogant little twerp (irrespective of the merits of the music, which would be subjective, but which I imagine a lot of people like, given his apparent popularity). And the entertainment/music industry has always been full of arrogant twerps and worse, obviously. So that's no big deal. But this is a graphic video, presumably aimed at teens as the boy is a teen, totally glorifying crime and violence, revelling in it. I had a look around the internet for what I imagined would be multiple mentions of this angle, but all I could find was fulsome praise of the guy and his music, including this song. No-one mentioning what the video actually shows. This is just normal then?

Am I alone in thinking this is a real problem? Am I missing something here?

The media and art that surround us have powerful effects on us, and especially on our children...a music video may well have more influence than an overt "morality tale" (for young people, almost certainly so).

The music is dreadful. Real bottom of the barrel. It's like living in idiocracy.

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 30/08/2022 17:08

@theDudesmummy you are really overthinking this.

And yet numerous studies into this issue have concluded no such thing

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 30/08/2022 17:22

@Elmore absolutely. 👍🏻

Who has conducted (and funded) these 'numerous studies' and to what end? Could they be biased or not? It's unwise to regard results of 'studies' as gospel

Freedomfighters · 30/08/2022 17:33

The policy exchange has some research on this. Seems that it does have a negative impact on young people. Hardly surprising really. I agree with you op.

Pearmain · 30/08/2022 17:37

@theDudesmummy I totally agree with you and think it’s sad that so many people will try and bend over backwards to insist that the music and images we surround ourselves have no effect on us, and young developing minds in particular. I bet there are lots of people reading this who agree with you.

I went and watched the video and I've also got to say I am shocked. During their rampage on the shop, Arrdee and his girlfriend stole milk and cereal and poured the milk straight into the cereal box. Such savagery should be banned.

Like the mum in the crunchy nut advert where she drops the kids off at school then pours milk into a box of crunchy nut to eat.
Is she their mum? 😂
The thing is, every generation is shocked by the next generations music.
Elvis caused a moral outrage with his hip swivelling, this was going to cause all kinds of sexual shenanigans amongst the impressionable youth.
Then we had punk rock, that had the older generation positively foaming, this was going to cause the impressionable youth to get upto god knows what.
Follow that with the New Romantics, god almighty, all the young men were going to start wearing frills and make up!
Fortunately, Elvis didn't start sexual shenanigans, the pill did.
Punk rock didn't start an anarchy amongst the youth and the New Romantics didn't cause blokes to suddenly start wearing frills and make up.

theDudesmummy · 30/08/2022 18:04

Studies have shown no direct correlation between watching violent videos/games and committing violent crimes. That is right. I don't think anyone can argue however that the cultural zeitgeist has no effect on people's thoughts and behaviour. The opposite is true. Punk rock, to mention the example given above (and indeed any other art form worth mentioning in the whole of human history), has absolutely had an effect on society, of course it has. Can you really argue against that?

Arr Dee. Derbyshire for Our Dee (Deirdre).

Abhannmor · 30/08/2022 18:07

Sadly, you are not being unreasonable. It is violent nihilistic garbage.

This plonker probably imagines himself as some kind of radical or revolutionary though. Maybe he once set fire to a bus shelter.

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 30/08/2022 18:10

@theDudesmummy you are a hypocrite, frankly. You're complaining about this, when you openly admit that you have liked music/videos that are worse.

But what’s the alternative? ‘This video definitely causes delinquent behaviour in youngsters because mumsnet user @theDudesmummy says so?’

Don’t watch Rihanna ‘Bitch Better Have my Money’, she actually murders someone.

No, I think he 'imagines' himself as a young man who's trying to make his name in the music world. Not all teens 'set fire to bus shelters.' As you put it.

Now we know why the murder rate spiked after 2015!!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 30/08/2022 18:17

I have a theory that the Gen X lot have been left with not many options for rebellion

Gen X did all the drugs and raving.
Xenials did all the internet dating.
Millennials had Paris and the likes of to watch do stupid stuff along with Jackass.

What have Gen X got?

And I've not heard of this one but Central Cee is worse. His song Doja is just awful, although my gay teen actually finds it hilarious and their mate has done a rather cracking parody of it. I would quote it but I'd be instantly banned by HQ

ReformedWaywardTeen · 30/08/2022 18:17

Sid Vicious went one better and murdered almost everyone in the front seat of the theatre.
Causing lots of punks to go murdering theatre goers.
( I made that last bit up before anyone goes into foam mode )

Abhannmor · 30/08/2022 18:45

Well he did murder his girlfriend

Hypocrite, or have just changed my thinking as I have got older and have had a child?...or both maybe...

I can think of so many videos with people glorifying crime. Britney, Toxic, for example, she poisons/drugs the guy in the video. Its nothing new. Its shock value. It's just a video.

VladmirsPoutine · 30/08/2022 19:12

@Notimeforaname It's not new but there are certain genres of music many people blame specifically for all the world's ills. Violence, drugs, the lot is heavily depicted in many genres but it's only a few which carry ALL the blame. It's quite funny when you think about it.
