Period gushes advice

bloodymari · 30/08/2022 06:09

I absolutely despise tampons. Always have. I always use pads. ( no pun intended )

But lately, no matter which pads I use, I get these intense gushes of blood that no longer can pad can hold. I can pretty much guarantee that I'll leak somehow.

Especially when getting out of bed, I have to be so careful, otherwise it goes all over the floor. But even when I'm just lying down sometimes this intense gush comes and nothing can hold it. I've also chained chairs / sofas etc. it is so embarrassing.

Does anyone else have this or any advice ? I feel like the pads just can't hold it, even when I change them every hour.

I rarely had this issue ( but did have it occasionally ) before I had kids. I've had two and now it's just insane. I however used to suffer from terrible cramps and I don't at all anymore. So that's a plus.

Many thanks, any advice appreciated.

I was going to suggest a mooncup + pad, but if you don't like tampons this won't work for you. If not, I found disposable incontinence underwear kept everything in as it's designed for big gushes of fluid.

Also, do go and see the doctor about it - they probably won't be able to do much to help, but they will check for and rule our any underlying conditions which can cause this.

BashfulClam · 30/08/2022 06:20

Have you tried maternity pads at night? Maybe period underwear and pad but it sounds like you should see your doctor l.

bloodymari · 30/08/2022 06:26

Do you think ? What could it be ??

Thanks for the suggestions !

Speak to your doctor

Elnetthairnet · 30/08/2022 06:27

Mooncup is far more comfortable than tampons - worth a try

JustKeepSw1mming · 30/08/2022 06:32

Or try a mirena coil? My periods are much lighter now so I only use a liner. Apparently good too if you are approaching menopausal age too

Woodsparrow · 30/08/2022 06:36

I hate tampons, never wore them, tried for swimming on occasion but really hated them so just didn't swim on my period.

Anyway, I gave a moon cup a go and love it, no discomfort. I use Wuka knickers and my cup now

But I agree with others, the amount of blood you are describing you should see your gp

historygeek · 30/08/2022 06:36

I wear period pants plus two pads at once- one towards the front and one towards the back of the gusset so that they overlap in the middle (if that makes sense?). Also, go to the GP- they might put you on transexamic acid which works wonders.

HouseOfWaffles · 30/08/2022 06:38

I agree that you should go to see your GP. I was given a coil which this flooding happens to me. It stopped immediately.

KangarooKenny · 30/08/2022 06:42

I agree that you need to see your GP, you’ll end up anaemic. That’s what happened to me so I had a coil put in. Wish I’d done it years ago.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 30/08/2022 06:42

Definitely consider the mirena coil, although I've asked GP about it multiple times this year and they won't respond to my calls or e-consults about it so be prepared for a wait!

PlntLady · 30/08/2022 06:44

You should speak to your GP if there has been a change in your flow.

However, I have this issue day and night on/off. I use a menstral cup and period underwear. The cup is great as it will only leek if it's full and on the odd occasion it is, the period underwear steps in. I never have to worry about the pad not being in the right place to catch any gushes or worry about maybe it was but has shifted, etc.
I highly recommend a combo of both.

AnImaginaryCat · 30/08/2022 06:48

I hate tampons, and had the same issue as you, plus v heavy periods. It was awful.

About 6 months tried a menstrual cup, admittedly reluctantly as I didn't like tampons and thought a cup would be the same. (I tried it was I was getting through so many towels I hated the amount of waste I was creating each month.)

Anyway, it's life changing. I'd even swear my periods aren't as heavy. There's still one day of my period where if I'm out I may need to use a towel as it might leak

Took a few times needing to adjust the position when I first tried. But it's totally different to tampons.

I use Organicup not Mooncup. I think it might be slight smaller or softer.

How old are your children? I ask as I had this for the first 14/15 months after dd2 was born. Period pants can be useful as they kinda hold the pad bit in tighter. Have you been the gp? Your periods sound very heavy, could it fibroids etc. would you consider a coil/the pill to cope?? Xx

My youngest is just 4 months old. I had two c sections.

I haven't been to the GP, just thought I would get fobbed off !

Anaemia and peri menopause can make period blood go thinner and cause it to gush, so would definitely go to GP and get checked out. I’m 46 and my periods are like water but I’m on Tranexamic Acid and it’s been a game changer for me. (TA thickens the blood up so stops it from gushing. You take it for four days at the beginning of your period). I struggled with tampons after DC2 was born, tried a mooncup and it’s been brilliant.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/08/2022 07:16

I had this for years. Finally got the Mirena coil about a year ago and it's a miracle. No periods!

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 30/08/2022 07:21

I had problems with 'gushing' for quite a while after the births of my children. I've always been prone to heavier periods but this was like I'd hardly have anything and then it would all suddenly come at once when I moved, on repeat for the first few days. What you are describing sounds even worse to me and if that is happening multiple times in a period, I would suggest speaking to someone about it. Could you be anaemic if it's only been a few months since you have birth? Anaemia can cause heavy periods which in turn cause anaemia...fun isn't it!!

Ginandcrispsarebliss · 30/08/2022 07:22

This happened to me OP. I had terrible heavy periods and it ruled my life for years. Getting out of bed was a nightmare, couldn't go anywhere when I was on my periods as I constantly leaked even with very large pads. I had to take iron tablets as I was anaemic. I am on the mirena coil which works for me and my periods have stopped. I am on HRT so the coil works with the patch. Should of gone on the coil years before the menopause and not suffered.
Have a chat with your doctor and I hope you will be free of heavy periods.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 30/08/2022 07:24

Forgot to add sorry that mine did settle down and have improved so much that I've been wondering if I need to speak to someone about how light they suddenly seem to be compared to what I have experienced previously.....but also don't want to tempt my usual ones back so I am just counting my blessings while it lasts for the first time since I had periods at the moment! So you may find it settles over the next few cycles but I would say if it's impacting you that much and they are that heavy then you need to seek a medical opinion.

itsgettingweird · 30/08/2022 07:25

Do see the GP.

I suffered for years and years and it got worse every month.

When I saw my GP they went through each thing step by step - nothing worked and I had a hysterectomy a few months ago (I had adenomyosis)

So my advice is everyone now is get to the GP at the beginning so if it hits an awful point you've already tried everything and don't have to start at that point.

Gaveitall · 30/08/2022 07:26

Discuss a Mirena coil with your doctor.
Works wonders!

Kelwar · 30/08/2022 07:29

Hi OP,
I’ve had flooding for years.. it’s an absolute pain, and am be debilitating in the sense you worry about going out incase you flood eveywhere. Mine started after having my children and just didn’t stop..I recently went for scans as I want an ablation.. and they found a polyp.. (non cancerous) but is likely the cause of my problems.
For now, I tranxemic acid and it definitely helps lighten the flow.. the docs have recently prescribed me an oral contraception to manage my hormones and bleeding (Qlaira) but so far it’s making me feel like I’m going mad..
I’ve heard great things about the mirena coil and the injection too.. but know they can both cause weight gain..as can the pill..
good luck .. you’re definitely not alone..

PeloAddict · 30/08/2022 07:32

These in the meantime are the only ones that work for me

Mrs86 · 30/08/2022 07:35

I've started placing a pad across at the front. I've been told I have a thick endometrial lining so that's what's making me bleed excessively. I'm booked in to have the mirena coil put in next month because apparently the progestin? In it thins the lining and can help stop bleeding! I'm constantly bleeding and if not bleeding heavy spotting and tmi pass massive clots/gushing constantly. Currently on the pill until coil fitting and I'm in heaven. My bleeding has stopped the longest (which is about 8 ish days) this year.
