Period gushes advice

I absolutely despise tampons. Always have. I always use pads. ( no pun intended )

But lately, no matter which pads I use, I get these intense gushes of blood that no longer can pad can hold. I can pretty much guarantee that I'll leak somehow.

Especially when getting out of bed, I have to be so careful, otherwise it goes all over the floor. But even when I'm just lying down sometimes this intense gush comes and nothing can hold it. I've also chained chairs / sofas etc. it is so embarrassing.

Does anyone else have this or any advice ? I feel like the pads just can't hold it, even when I change them every hour.

I rarely had this issue ( but did have it occasionally ) before I had kids. I've had two and now it's just insane. I however used to suffer from terrible cramps and I don't at all anymore. So that's a plus.

Many thanks, any advice appreciated.

I have tranxamic acid aswell OP and they do work. I can't use tampons either (rectal -vaginal endometriosis Blush). The first few.days I used to wear giant incontinence pads but still leaked, now kotex night time are good but still get through a lot of them. Definitely go to your GP, just because that much bleeding isn't normal. I've been advised against the coil as there's a strong chance it will get taken over by the endo and different pills made my blood pressure go crazy. Get the ball rolling, I got bollocked by the GP and hospital because I left it for 17 years and just got on with it, it was only when my periods started lasting for 15 days average and then starting again a week later I went.

honestly, go to the GP, I had this but it was peri menopause related. And nothing would have contained it. I was anemic too which I hadn’t realised, and that can make it worse.

I was emboldened by the same thing having happened to my normally mild sister who went to the GP and said ‘that’s not happening again I’m no moving till you take me seriously and suggest something or refer me’. She just said she wasn’t going to be fobbed off.

she went Mirena route and it worked really well for her.

Mirena coil. I had flooding as a result of medication I was on. Bore with it for a year (I don’t know why!) and when I did get to the GP, she was so good and said no-one should be putting up with that, let’s get it sorted. So we did. I was also anaemic from the flooding, all sorted from having the coil

Sometimes gushes are more common when you are peri menopausal or menopausal. Still a good idea to discuss with your GP.

If heavynos normal for you you could try a cup, reusable pads and period pants all together. Then if you want to take your cup out you have pad protection you can take off and pants left. Reusable was a game changer for me as it absorbs so much more and so quickly. You are looking for pads made with Zorb as it can absorb loads in seconds. X

I have this too and I have endometriosis and fibroids. Have already had one laparoscopy that helped. Now waiting on another. Might be worth looking into.

I use period pants and night pads at the same time on the heaviest days and I don’t leave the house. I might try maternity pads that someone suggested.

Fuckitydoodah · 30/08/2022 08:24

My periods were/are extremely heavy since having my children. I was reluctant to go down the hormone contraceptive or coil route, so was prescribed tranexamic acid tablets. They make my periods so much more manageable and I feel like I can leave the house on my heaviest days.

Definitely go and see your doctor. You don't have to carry on suffering with this.

Decidualcast · 30/08/2022 08:40

This is bringing back memories. I had fibroids and endometriosis, which caused the most horrific gushes. It also made me very I’ll with anemia. I’d have a scan to check if anything is causing it. I had my fibroids removed and Mirena inserted, which solved it. Now I get a bit of spotting and use a liner. Don’t put up with it as it. I had to constantly wash bedding and check clothes when out. It was awful. I’m saving lots of money now!

I agree with everyone saying it's worth seeing a doctor. I woukd also recommend period pants. I have the most hard-core modi bodi ones, including the shorts for night time, and it's fab. There are times when inwill flood so much I feel like I have to change the pants but usually I don't and even if I do, I do.so because it's uncomfortable not because I have leaked.

Pava22 · 30/08/2022 08:46

@historygeek me too. Since having my copper coil they are very heavy and I do the same as you and sometimes I put cycling shorts on top to keep in place.

I was on the mini pill before and it suddenly decided to start giving me 3 periods a month after 2 years of being fine. Also wanted to come off of hormonal contraception. They warned me they would be heavier. And they are but better than 3 a month!

That sounds like too much really to be 'normal'.

itsgettingweird · 30/08/2022 17:05

As much as mini pill or mirena can work for some people they don't always so you will have to keep going back if needs be.

I ended up taking northisterone every day for over a year before a hysterectomy but some people do take it longer.

Even on it for 18 months+ and no periods whilst on it when the surgeon spoke to me after my op she said my uterus was very large and bulky still!

What we have to be firm about as woman is not putting up with this and realising sanitary protection should last 4-6 hours comfortably and anything less than that except for May a few hours per period is just not normal and when it affects your quality of life you shouldn't have to put up with it.

Kitkatfiend31 · 30/08/2022 17:11

Period pants that have cover from front to back. I have some by Cheeky. Started getting some odd gushing myself so got these. Use pads as well on heavy days but give me some security.
