Today, in the supermarket, I saw a woman (I actually heard her before I rounded the corner and saw her, to be accurate) of about 40 loudly berating a man who worked there about something she wanted not being in stock. She then started to jump up and down on the spot stamping her feet like a toddler and then sat cross-legged on the floor in the middle of the aisle, arms folded, bottom lip pouted out. I was mortified for her, the worker, the people witnessing it, for everyone involved. It was so bizarre (though I was secretly glad to witness it as everyone on here always shares bizarre stories from people in public and I always feel left out I'd never seen anything before) Grin

I do.

And I order gin before 5 o'clock.

No fucks.

I’ve been known to order gin before 5 o clock too. There are fucks though. But that’s another thread.

Oh god, yes please. Then we could settle the question of how many Cinzano Biancos constitute a Cinzani Bianci, or how many Martinos in a Martini !! Should an Espresso Martini actually be an Espressi Martino ? !!

A Martini should just be a very large slug of any basic London Dry gin, stirred with ice, shown a bottle of vermouth (Noilly Prat for preference), three big fat green olives on a cocktail stick (nocellara if possible, otherwise... whatever), add a sliver of lemon peel, pour into a vaguely clean glass, and neck it.

Try to look sophisticated.

Three or four of those and you really won't give a fuckerooni about singulars, plurals, genders, or indeed what country or century you are in.

Molto furioso.

I wanted to post something about being testy but I couldn’t make it work. Feel free to jump in !!

I think trying to look sophisticated while ‘necking it’ is the hard part, full marks for the martini recipe though. I’m off to try that molto pronterooni !!

A deputy head at my DCs old school. She was at least 35+.

DC had been involved in an altercation. A lad who was older and bigger had been abusive to DCs friend and when friend wouldn't kiss him, he punched her to the floor. DC helped her up, and said knock my mate down again and see what happens. They said they were so angry at him and said it before they realised what they were about to say.

Anyway, boy pushes her mate back over onto her bum, this time without punching. So DC screamed at him and then he pushed them too, and kicked them hard for good measure. He started to wander off laughing to his mates and DC jumped up and punched him.

Firstly, I do not condone violence. I've never been one to say if you get hit, hit back. Even DC was quite in shock they did it.

Boy wasn't particularly hurt, more a bruised ego than anything else.

Of course, I get called up to school the day after and the Deputy Head is not happy at all.

She comes in late, all guns blazing, screeching about how it's disgusting that DC has done this, she would like them excluded.
I had to interrupt her because I was quite sure if she screeched any higher I would be deaf or it would be at a pitch only animals could hear.

I asked what was being done about the boy involved as not only has he assaulted two female students, he did so to the first one after she refused his demands for a snog. I felt that although DC should not have retaliated, and would be given a punishment at home, that the boy was the main aggressor and had he been an adult male in a work place would be liable for sexual harassment as well

She would not hear of it, DC was to be kept in isolation for 3 days with a view to at the very least a suspension. Bearing in mind they'd never been in trouble before.

When I said she was being ridiculous and I would not agree to that, and would speak to the headteacher, she literally crossed her arms, and started stamping her foot about her authority. I had to leave because DH was looking at me like "is she for real" and I got a mental image of Cartman from South Park going on about his authorata.

DC was given a lunchtime detention in the end which was fine and the head intervened on snog or I punch you boy who was indeed suspended for 2 days.

But I was baffled as to how she could be a deputy head and act like a screeching, petulant child because I dared to disagree with her

@Rosscameasdoody I'm sorry you've had to be testis to all this tomfoolery.

(Testis is Latin for 'a witness' dontcha know Wink)

Ps. No really, very sorry for those of you for whom the derailment is proving an ache in the testicolo / testicoli.

Likely had a learning disability, MH issues, recent traumatic event, medication, any number of reasons

Yes I wouldn’t pass this off as spoiled behaviour. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

I hope someone helped her out instead of judging her like you

Dibbydoos · 30/08/2022 20:01

My SIL had a huge oil portrait of herself as if she was graduating - never been near enough to a degree to sniff one. I find that self absorbed behaviour really odd.

I think the woman in your tale, OP, probably had a disability :( ill health isn't always visible.

And I've left my two tiny gardens on side and front if my detached house to grow like topsy. My next door but one neighbour has taken offence. He keeps asking when I'll sort them out and I keep telling him when the bugs don't need the plants anymore. Does ge contribute towards my house? No. Do I care what he thinks? No hahaha.

I had a very good friend who would contact me almost daily and would meet regularly and were close. Then my teenage DS suddenly died. When I told her, she barely contacted me. Then when I met and spoke to her afterwards she told me:
'Let's not talk about your DS. It is too upsetting for me. I've cried so much and I had to take a week off work. I'm done with crying and have no more tears left'.

She then later contacted me again to tell me that she was still going through her grief stages and finding it hard. She was also glad her DS (same age as my DS) was now off to a Uni nearby so that they could see each other all the time.

Not once did she ever ask or check in with me to find out how I was doing, or acknowledge how I must be feeling. It was always about her and how she was coping 🙄!

She hasn't contacted me again and I have ceased all effort with her now.

That's utterly appalling behaviour. What a narcissistic thing to say. I'm so sorry about your DS. Big, big, big unmumsnetty hug to you.

Quite a funny one happened to me today. Driving along a little bit of road in the town centre , which has the look of a pedestranised area but is a road used all the time by traffic.
It's quite a tourist town, so I am always very forgiving of people walking down the centre of the road and most people usually move to the side when they realise a car is coming.
Driving down the road today and there was a couple, both probably mid fifties, the female looks over her shoulder and clocks me driving slowly behind them and goes to pull the male to one side. The male looks over his shoulder spots a female in a crap car and slows right down, they had been walking at a normal pace but he slowed right down to a proper amble.
There was only about another 20 metres to go so I just sighed and continued along behind him at a snails pace. The female had moved over to one side and was walking at a normal pace.
Cue a man in a van coming up behind me, started madly gesticulating and then proper held his hand on the horn. Ambling man spun round obviously thinking it was me, bent over and started doing a weird sort of petulant dance in the middle of the road , flicking V's at me and shouting fuck you repeatedly.
At which point Van Man gets out and shouts 'get out of the fucking road you absolute dick'
Ambling man then did get out of the road pretty sharpish, I got past but noticed in the mirror that once Van Man had passed Ambling man gave him the finger and Van Man braked suddenly. Not sure how it played out after that, but the female was standing around the corner with a sort of resigned WTF face on.

Weird - I can’t believe I did it.
pregnant with DC1, I put together a cot that was delivered, pleased with my efforts, when I heard DH coming home I hid (literally 8months pregnant) under the cot (why?).
he came in the bedroom, saw the cot but not me, because I was under it, and I then came out after 10 minutes sobbing because he hadn’t looked for me. He was confused and said he’d presumed I was out but I wouldn’t be placated and insisted that he should have looked for me. I cried for ages. He was totally bemused. It all seemed so rational at the time!

Oh dear.

A former neighbour of mine didn't have the excuse of being pregnant at the time.

However, she once snubbed me for several days and, when my housemate asked her what I had done to upset her, he was told "He knows what he has done."

When she eventually decided to speak me, I was told that she'd had an upsetting dream which I was also in but, apparently in this dream, I gave her bad advice which made things worse.

She never did tell me what bad advice I had been handing out so I might still be doing so unwittingly for all I know.

I had been out practicing driving and was on the narrow road with loads of passing places back to my house, L plates on car. I was almost at the next passing place when some idiot in a Chelsea tractor came flying down the road, straight past the passing place, and screeched to a halt in front of my tiny car. They then edged gradually closer to me, gesturing aggressively that I should reverse out their way, presumably because they had a bigger car. You can imagine how irate they were able to get in the 10 or so minutes we were there before I was finally able to get them to understand that I was still learning to drive and hadn't learnt to reverse yet but maybe they'd like to pop in to the space right behind them?

FoggyCrumpet · 30/08/2022 20:55

To move on from panini-gate I've remembered a friend's excellent stand off with an air hostess.

Friend is very self conscious about her overly well endowed bust. She will never wear a top like a T-shirt on its own. Getting on a flight to somewhere warm for her holiday she was wearing a T-shirt and light jacket. Once she was sat in her seat she took of her jacket and laid it across her lap. As the plane prepared for take off the air hostesses did their thing strolling down the aisle checking seat belts were on, and friend's was obscured by her jacket. The air hostess told her to put it in the overhead locker but there were some jocular young men in the seats behind and my friend didn't want to stand up and reach up giving the guys a side view of her ample bosom in a T-shirt. So she said "no, you do it, it's your job" which admittedly perhaps wasn't the best way to ask an air hostess to assist. The air hostess dug her heels in. My friend refused to budge. Cross, rude words were traded and eventually friend's travelling companion jumped up and said "well if neither of you will do it, I will" and clambered over friend and stuffed the jacket in the locker!

I'd say sometimes people act unreasonable but have a good reason for doing so which we aren't party to! Wink

Randomword6 · 30/08/2022 21:03

I was asked to give language lessons to this woman and instead of payment I stupidly decided I would do a skills exchange. She was a "therapeutic life coach". I gave her three 1 hr lessons for which I prepped and made resources. When it came to my turn, she sat me down with a questionnaire to fill in and then talked on the phone to a friend. I heard her say "I've got someone here but we can have a phone consultation." I then suggested she pay me for my sessions and she decided that wouldn't work for her.

FoggyCrumpet · 30/08/2022 21:14

@Isonthecase

I used to live in Devon. Lots of narrow lanes, limited passing points. Often it was easier to reverse at high speed, some guy once rolled down his window to compliment me on my excellent speedy reversing. But sometimes the car driver coming the other way would somehow rub me up the wrong way by aggressively driving straight at me. My speciality is to look for the gear stick - clue for the other driver - this is going to be challenging - then reverse slowly into the bank. Pull forward. Smile. Look for the gear stick. Reverse slowly into the bank on the other side. Slowly zigzag back to the nearest passing point as if you have never reversed a car before. Remember to smile apologetically.

Call me petty or a lot of other things but we have to get our laughs where we can!
