To bugger off on a secret break??

My question is AIBU? And if it WHERE would you go??

DP is taking kids off for 2 weeks in October for an overseas family visit.
I will be staying, to WFH.

this has NEVER happened and eldest is 13. I am besides myself with the potential luxury of being home alone…

BUT. I’m really tempted to do something to —- along the lines of a health retreat, or spa break or city visit, U.K. or Europe for a few days, 5 days or so. and not tell DP til after … I can afford about £1k max - where would you go??? What would you do?

I’ll tell DP after, I just don’t want anyone raining on my potential parade as in theory I’m not doing family trip to save ££ and holiday time. Though the main reason is - I just don’t want to spend time/money on that trip ( we go enough as a family…)

‘Do you have any friends who would join you?’

I do, I just feel in need to come up with a vague plan first!

I don’t feel like I should need to discuss or ask permission, quite honestly. And yes DP can be a bit of a fun sponge at times - I’m the extrovert and DP is more of a stay at home type.

and often tries to put the kibosh on my solo plans - which I generally ignore.

I would do exactly the same thing OP. I can totally relate to your situation. I've booked a day off before and told DH I was off to work and went for a spa day with an afternoon tea before. It was bliss and exactly what I needed to recharge. I returned home a much more relaxed and better person to be around. I never did fess up to DH though 🙈

I'd go somewhere coastal in the UK, with nice walks and restaurants. Or I'd maybe go to Bruges.

StillHereChoosing · 30/08/2022 11:38

I would go to an Alp. Or a sub-alp (is that what they're called)? Quick flight to Zurich or Innsbruck, an hour or so on the train, and then spend a few days walking on hills, gazing at mountains, drifting in and out of spas/pools/saunas, eating, and napping. Utter bliss.

Havehope21 · 30/08/2022 11:40

I would go to a spa hotel - probably somewhere like the Lake District as you can do some bits and bobs up there (lots of beautiful views and places to visit - stock up on Grasmere gingerbread!) or Cornwall (lots of beautiful beaches after being pampered and great food too.).

This would be pretty much my fantasy mini holiday: www.aqua-spa-resorts.ch/en/mineralbad-spa-rigi-kaltbad

Bindayagain · 30/08/2022 11:51

If they're away two weeks, at minimum you'd have your weekends to play with - would you be expected to stay in the house then? If not, then I can't see the problem with a break away somewhere.

SunnyD44 · 30/08/2022 12:02

YABU enjoy the peace at home and then book a spa weekend at a different time so you get to do both.

WhereshouldIgo · 30/08/2022 12:30

Some fab suggestions! I’m sure I’ll miss them loads towards the end but right now I’m too giddy with the thought of the freedom… we e both been WFH since March 2020 too, and homeschooled kids so we honestly have spent an awful lot of time together…

I haven't managed it yet so no idea about where to go - I just wanted to say YADNBU!! Oh, the luxury!!

TopGolfer · 30/08/2022 12:37

I really enjoyed Borringdon Hall in Plymouth it for similar money you could book a hotel with a spa somewhere like Prague or Warsaw.

TopGolfer · 30/08/2022 12:43

StillHereChoosing is your suggestion a day spa or an overnight place, I can’t work it out from the website? It looks fantastic.

StillHereChoosing · 30/08/2022 13:01

@TopGolfer There's a hotel with a dayspa attached. Disclaimer: I've not been - just read the websites A LOT. It is at the top of my wish list for an alone-time holiday, as soon as that opportunity arises, and it is my happy zone-out fantasy place in the meantime

TopGolfer · 30/08/2022 13:05

Thanks, I think I’ll join you and have it as my fantasy place too when I’m having one of my ‘let’s pretend I live at a spa moments’.

mattressspring · 30/08/2022 13:08

What an absolutely bizarre marriage.

StillHereChoosing · 30/08/2022 13:53

@TopGolfer yes! That would be lovely. See you there 😊 Hope you can join us too OP- and anyone else reading along who fancies it too of course !

WhereshouldIgo · 31/08/2022 08:11
