Think we've got rid and them boom live ones again galore a few days later
The nitty gritty is supposed to remove eggs and everything
I need tried and tested methods what products will kill these critters dead, I can not send DC back to school with nits and DS is desperate for a haircut which I had to get the clippers out and do a homemade one as I can't take him to the barbers
Please help me Sad

Old wives tales are vinegar, tea tree and vodka (not together!). But the magic combo is combing out at first kill keep combing then reapplying the lotion/concoction in a weeks time to get the ones that have hatched.

Honnomushi · 29/08/2022 19:35

When we get an infestation we use a nit shampoo. We then use a nit comb daily until they are all gone.

IggyAce · 29/08/2022 19:38

I did conditioner and nitty gritty comb every day for 1 week and then every other day for a week. I then used to check hair every Sunday evening and start the 2 weeks process again if I found any live ones.

JustBkind · 29/08/2022 19:39

Have you used a medical nit shampoo from the chemist? That would be my first suggestion just to get rid of them straight away.

then you need to rinse the hair with detol
in the water diluted for several weeks after. It’s part of the rinse not the wash so don’t rinse it after you’ve rinsed it with the Detol if you know what I mean. Works every time.

Sparklybanana · 29/08/2022 19:40

Ds got sent home from nursery and then we checked older brother /patient zero (gross).
Use conditioner and come it through on day 1, 3 and 7 and 14 for luck.
You can use nit shampoo and leave it overnight.
Also hairdryer and straighteners will murder the little blighters that are remaining.

You do need to be thorough and work in sections and dry combing isn't as effective so use conditioner.

Oh, and do everyone in the house.

Good luck

You have to re-treat every 2 days to get the new ones as they hatch, before they reach maturity. Do it 3 or 4 times and you'll be clear. Make sure you don't have them too and reinfest DC. Wash all bedding, coats towel etc on hot. If his hair is long enough, use straighteners on it as close to the roots as you can. It kills the eggs before they hatch then.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/08/2022 19:43

use conditioner

Make sure you wipe the comb after after pull through the hair.

be meticulous - split the hair into sections so you don’t miss anywhere

do it daily for a week and then every other day for another week.

check yourself and DP if you have one too.

Mouk · 29/08/2022 19:44

You have my sympathy. Mine got them over the summer :(

You will need to use a treatment. Headrin is crap. Lyclear or Full Marks are good. Use on day 1, then day 10 (for good measure I did another treatment a few days later). Vinegar and water in a spray bottle also good. Vinegar breaks down the clue that help the egg cling to the hair follicle.

Change bedding often (especially pillow cases). Everyone has their own hairbrush/comb. Tumble dry teddies etc that were on their beds at a dry heat to kill the nits.

Lice are the worst!

Gingersay · 29/08/2022 19:44

Cheap tea tree conditioner 2 bottles for £1.80 smothered on their hair and comb with the nitty gritty put a film on and just comb for hours, every second night for a week. I've never got any after the second night.
Nitty gritty also do a spray that you can put on in the morning to deter them.
While my girls were at primary school I run the nitty gritty through every Sunday as well just as a wee routine.

Beansí · 29/08/2022 19:44

First use a nit killer lotion from the chemist. Leave it on ages and comb the fuckers out. Then you need to painstakingly go hair by hair and pull off all the eggs. Repeat as needed. Just combing through conditioner isn't going to do anything. No wonder schools are infested if all people are doing is combing conditioner through.

loobylou44 · 29/08/2022 19:45

You should be able to see live lice really easily. They are easiest to spot around the hairline. Part the hair and be patient, if they're there you'll see them.
If they are infected get yourself a 500g tub of 50:50 liquid paraffin in white soft paraffin for a couple of pounds from the chemist. It's thick and gloopy.
For long hair pin up and coat each section from top to bottom liberally. Do the whole head and pay attention to hairline and behind ears. For short hair coat whole head.
Put a shower cap on for an hour or so.
Wash out. WARNING. It will take a few washes. It you struggle to get it out use a bit of fairy liquid rubbed in and left for 10 mins. You may have to repeat a couple of applications of fairy liquid to completely remove. It's not a quick method. You'll need a good couple of hours but there are no nasty smells or chemicals, this method has never failed and you don't need to retreat. They'll be gone. Good luck xx

Hankunamatata · 29/08/2022 19:45

Headrin once. Comb daily for 10 days. Repeat Hedrin once then again comb for 10 days.

Mouk · 29/08/2022 19:45
  • high heat (not dry heat)
Hankunamatata · 29/08/2022 19:47

Nit can take up to 9 days to hatch. So you need to be combing daily at least 10 days.

womaninatightspot · 29/08/2022 19:52

I use nitty gritty and comb through Hedrin, free stuff from chemists. Leave on overnight, twice a week for two weeks.

Nellodee · 29/08/2022 19:53

Different head lice treatments have different percentage success rates. Do a Google, find out the active ingredients, and rotate between the different “families” of treatments until you find one that is effective on the specific infestation you have. Persist, persist, persist. Treat hair regularly, pillow washing is not as important, peripheral stuff like bedsheets and stuffed toys, even less so.

newtb · 29/08/2022 20:03

Head and shoulders shampoo and a nitty gritty comb. The shampoo just seems to nuke them.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2022 20:07

You need to combat every few days for 3 weeks to break the life cycle

dementedpixie · 29/08/2022 20:07

Comb*

ginnybag · 29/08/2022 20:10

Hedrin once. Comb while on, thoroughly

Neat fairy liquid on dry to get it out.

Blow dry/straighten as hot as you can

Then hedrin shampoo and comb on every Wash/every 3 days for minimum two weeks.

You've got to do everyone in contact together, change pillow cases and hairbrushes each time.

They're dealable with, but fucking annoying

buttons123456 · 29/08/2022 20:13

You need headlice treatment from the pharmacy . You put it on and leave it , it kills them all in one go ! Job done !

dementedpixie · 29/08/2022 20:17

You need to repeat treatment as they won't kill all the eggs.

OppsUpsSide · 29/08/2022 20:20

Nitwits! Absolutely fantastic stuff. I have tried loads and we had a recurring nit problem for years, there isn’t a method I haven’t tried.
Nitwits is by far the best of the bunch.

Blossomandbee · 29/08/2022 20:24

I got rid of them quickly with a cheap plastic nit comb, dunked in a bowl of water after each stroke through the hair. Repeat at least once daily. You have to comb through and through over and over.
It's time consuming but it did the trick. The pharmacist told me not to bother with chemicals as they don't often kill them all or the eggs.

SpacePotato · 29/08/2022 20:31

Hedrin once that's like baby oil. It coats them and they suffocate.
I leave it on overnight.

Repeat over two weeks to get anymore that hatch.

I certainly couldn't be arsed nit combing my girls and my own long hair with conditioner every day.
