Or is my neighbour?

We’ve moved into a semidetached around 3 months ago and it’s needed a lot of work doing.

For maybe the last 3-4 weeks every time we start to do work my next door neighbour will play reallllly loud music.

Should we put up with it?

so….you’re making a lot of noise and it’s annoying you that he’s trying to drown you out? I’m not sure you have much of an argument here.

unless it’s insanely loud (like drowning out normal conversations inside your home?) I can’t imagine the local council will care.

have you tried taking to him about how best you can minimise disruption?

Sunnyqueen · 29/08/2022 16:03

What do you mean 'should we put up with it?' How were you thinking of not putting up with it?
He's trying to drown the noise out you are already creating so yeah yabu. Even if he wasn't trying to drown you out as long as its in the daytime he's entitled to play loud music.

JustSortYoursefOut · 29/08/2022 16:05

Your neighbour is probably sick of the noise you've been making for 3-4 weeks

MessyBunPersonified · 29/08/2022 16:06

Go round and tell them to turn it down, you want to be able to hear the banging and drilling noises you're making without being interrupted by music.

WeepingSomnambulist · 29/08/2022 16:06

You're allowed to work on your house but it really is bloody annoying to live next door to a renovation. You've been making noise for 3 months. Did you go over and introduce yourself and let them know about the work being done? Did you offer to avoid any really noisy things during hours he needs quiet? You know, were you neighbourly about it?

It's been months of noise. He is now playing loud music to drown you out. What's your problem? And how exactly do you plan to not "put up with it?" What are you going to do to him?

It's been 3 months of noise. He started the music playing 3-4 weeks ago.

The neighbour is a woman. Why have you all assumed the person is a male?

Is THAT what you're taking from the response so far?

Loocheeyar · 29/08/2022 16:11

Reverse ;-)

SirChenjins · 29/08/2022 16:12

How long have you been doing the renovations?

Did you speak to him about your renovation plans in advance and find out if there were any hours you needed to avoid for eg shift work?

When are you starting/finishing the renovations?

How much longer are they going on for?

AllFreeOwls · 29/08/2022 16:12

So you're annoyed that your neighbor is trying to drown out the noise you're making with other noise?

Boreded · 29/08/2022 16:15

This has to be a joke surely.

or a reverse?

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 29/08/2022 16:16

REVERSE

LampLighter414 · 29/08/2022 16:17

Yes because if it’s inside sociable hours and only at times when you are also busy being noisy then who is being bothered by it?

ouch321 · 29/08/2022 16:21

Yes very funny Confused

Really don't think the sex of your neighbour matters in this one 😂

purplecorkheart · 29/08/2022 16:30

Are you doing the work during day time hours or during the evenings or early mornings?
Have you spoken to her and given her a realistic plan and timescale of how long the noisy jobs with continue?

ToppCat · 29/08/2022 16:36

There’s no such thing as sociable hours. That being said, there are hours when you can’t make loud building work, e.g. before 8am, after 6pm etc. according to your council rules. Are you working outside those hours?

Abracadabra12345 · 29/08/2022 16:41

You could be neighbours for years. What a terrible start. You need to talk to each other, politely

So what happens when you play your music loud when the power tools start?

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 29/08/2022 16:45

Oh please go round and have a word with her, then come back and tell us what she said!

Sunnyqueen · 29/08/2022 16:45

ChocolateCoveredKimmy · 29/08/2022 16:08

The neighbour is a woman. Why have you all assumed the person is a male?

How does that make any difference?

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/08/2022 16:46

YABU

You neighbour is telling you (via loud music) that they are really fed up with the noise of all your work.

You need to go round and apologise and talk to them. Preferably with wine/cake/nice box of biscuits.

Talk them about how long your noise is going to go on for and ask them if there is anything that you can do to minimise the disruption for them.

woodhill · 29/08/2022 16:49

I don't blame him

I put the radio on when next door are being noisy
