To think that premonitions are a thing?

Are premonitions a thing? Have you ever just knew something was going to happen and it did! Like, you knew you would marry a doctor and you did or you knew you were going to get a parking ticket that day and you did... that sort of thing. Does it happen?

I have a bit of a weird theory about this when this happens.. i think that time is not how we see it.. so we see it in chronological order, but that's not how things actually happen.. so when we have these feelings that something is going to happen, and then it does happen, it's because it actually has already happened

Atmywitsend29 · 29/08/2022 22:23

Premonitions yes.
In the form of feelings, senses, visions and dreams. Sometimes something I've seen will happen years later.

Also the knowing the moment something bad happened. My Dad was sick and in hospice, I woke up at home at the exact moment he passed and knew instantly he had gone. I was 50 miles away.

Startuplife · 29/08/2022 22:27

I am not woo in the slightest, don’t believe in horoscopes or anything like that but I frequently have premonitions that come true. Nothing crazy but thinking things like “I have a feeling X is going to turn up to lunch unwell” or recently I was seeing a friend for dinner and I said to DP beforehand I think she’s going to tell us she’s pregnant. She was only 6 weeks so had only recently found out herself and there was no way I’d have had any idea she was except for the feeling.
I’d never tell anyone in real life as I’m sure they’d think I was nuts 😂

PollyEsther · 29/08/2022 22:32

I get this a lot. Not all the time by any means, but if there’s ever something slightly uncertain, e.g: will I get this job, will that house fall through, will DC pass their exam? I always know the answer, whether good or bad.

The last two houses we’ve lived in, I’ve walked into (to view) and known immediately that they would be our home. Even if we’ve viewed several others and they’ve been fine, I’ve known we wouldn’t live in them. The one we live in now, in particular, I left the viewing and immediately called DM and told her ‘I’ve found it, it’s definitely this one.’

I’ve never told anybody about this phenomenon. Because I’m vehemently anti-woo and consider psychic-ness to be a bit shit mostly. Hypocrite

@PetalParty what a scary experience! I'd class that more as intuition though and instinct. We feel or know somehow when someone is watching us.
Still unexplainable though.

Treelines · 30/08/2022 08:24

Yes, years ago, when I first saw my husband (we would have been 18), I had a feeling we would get married. I remember the exact moment, and we hadn't met yet - he was walking past my halls.

More recently, I dreamt that my best friend had a terrible headache. She was on holiday in the States at the time, and she messaged me the following afternoon to say she had Covid.

BoviTraci · 30/08/2022 08:26

I've very often thought about people I haven't seen in years and then see their obituary in the local paper

PotatoFamily · 30/08/2022 08:38

I used to have premonitions in my dreams a lot, if big world events. Sometimes they’d happen 6 months later, sometimes the next day. I dreamt of the London soho bomb, the Concorde crash, the London bus bombing and the space shuttle explosion.
It doesn’t happen anymore, I’ve stopped remembering my dreams now I’m in my 40s.

Howtomakethishappen · 30/08/2022 08:45

I experience premonitions a lot and sometimes get very anxious waiting for them to happen. 80-90% of the time they do.

They are random, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Sometimes you could argue confirmation bias but not always.

I only ever share my thoughts if I think someone is in danger, because I know most people poo poo the idea, but I live a very intuitive life and consider premonitions are just part of my radar being finely tuned.

HmmHmmHmm

BeanieTeen · 30/08/2022 08:51

No. I believe in coincidences. And lucky guesses.
Its like when people say they ‘knew’ you were going to have a girl/boy when you tell someone the sex of your new baby. No, you didn’t, you had a 50% chance of getting it right which is fairly substantial. That’s not the definition of knowing something.

The last time I saw/spoke to my Dad alive was at a festival that we went to separately but met up at a few times. At the end of the festival, I'd already said my goodbyes, but on the morning he was leaving I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to go and find him and say goodbye again. I've never felt anything that emotionally strong before so at 15, didn't really understand it. By the time I got to his camping area, he'd just left and I dismissed the feelings. I didn't speak to him again (we often went a month or so without speaking) and a few weeks later he died of a heart attack. I look back and see the way I felt as a kind of premonition and will never ignore or dismiss anything like that again.

I remember some years ago being in the car with DH and the DC's and coming down to the end of a lane we'd driven a million times. For the first time I noticed a sign on a farm gate about vehicle repairs and in my head I instantly thought "That will be useful when we need to get the crash damage fixed".

We'd not had an accident, but seconds later a lad speeding in his mates car misjudged the junction and hit us at about 40mph. It was very weird and my first thought when the dust settled was "oh, there we go".
DD was concussed, DH suffered a neck injury, DS and I were fine. The car was towed out of the way to the exact place I'd been looking at seconds before.

The other day when England won the football I was only half watching it by time Sweet Caroline was playing and the captain was trying her best to get away from the reporters. I realised I was watching ‘the bit’ that I had heard someone on the radio(I think or somewhere) a day or so before talking about. They were recounting how funny it was that she just wanted to get away and sing Sweet Caroline with the rest of the team. I called out to my husband asking if it was recorded because I’d sworn he’d been watching it live and sure enough it was live. I can’t shake the feeling of 100% having heard someone talking about and describing that moment but I can’t even really recall where I heard it!

WittyW00 · 01/09/2022 11:53

Another one; we were driving with our caravan toward a place we’d been lots of times. As we approached the bend I said to my husband “you should slow down”… now it’s true I ask him to slow a lot and he usually says I’m only doing ?? Mph but this time he slowed down just as an artic came around the bend in the middle of the road! We’ve driven the road many times since and I just get a shiver that he actually acted and that my ‘irrational’ fear of something being in the middle of the road came true.

I once fancied a guy called Luke, but he flirted but never asked me out, one night when out with my friends on a Thursday and I was asked what I was doing tomorrow evening I said "Going out with Luke". I wasn't but the next day he asked me out and I did go out with him that evening. Cue a few months of being mucked about by him. I thought I was psychic, but not psychic enough to see that he was a waste of time.

When I was in Yr 10/11 I used to walk home past the fire station every day with this overwhelming feeling that I would marry a firefighter. I did. I always knew I'd have a girl then 2 boys. We did. And we're done.
When I was 8ish I knew the barber would cut my little brothers ear and he did. My youngest was due on my Grans 80th birthday, she was perfectly healthy but I knew she would never meet him, she passed away exactly a month before he was born after contracting sepsis from a hip op.
I'm 34 and always thought I wouldn't see 30 but here I am. Trying to ignore that one.

Unmarriedhousewife · 01/09/2022 19:30

Oh and the farmers field opposite my kids school. Always knew we'd live there, kept joking how great it would be for the school run if they built houses on it. After 10 years they did, and now we do!

Have you divorced the firefighter now?

Six years before I met my husband I had a dream of a man and a little blonde haired boy at a ski lodge. I had just finished chemo and was told it was very possible I was sterile.

Six years later I met the man (who lived in another country at the time of my dream) who became my husband and we had one ds - the little blonde haired boy and we moved to Salt Lake City Utah.

I had another premonition dream about my mother’s death five years before she got sick. I write down these dreams now - they are not ordinary, very vivid and when I wake up I actually feel like the dream really happened.

Unmarriedhousewife · 01/09/2022 22:10

No. We got married last year after many years and I haven't name changed. I'm also no longer a SAHM but does it matter.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/09/2022 22:22

Yes I've had this happen a few times, it's normally small things like I randomly think of someone I've not seen in ages and then bump into them in town.

Or I look at the phone and it rings.

CuriousMama · 01/09/2022 23:00

I've had lots.
I had one about Jill Dando being shot. It was so fleeting. When it came on the news I was a little freaked out. Even though it's pretty normal to have them that one was strange.

I wouldn't even have bothered answering.

I mean I usually know when I’m going to get a parking ticket because I’ve parked somewhere I shouldn’t have parked. It’s not a premonition, it’s just me knowing the consequence of illegal parking is a parking ticket.

Other than that, no, I don’t believe in them. I think if it like in the film About a Boy when Marcus says looking back he knew something was about to happen, but he only thinks that now looking back and knowing something was about to happen.
