To want to talk about roller skating!

Not an aibu (sorry!) but posting for traffic as I don't know where else to post!

Anyone else into roller skating?

A friend of mine took me to a rink with her for her birthday and I loved it! It's very scary but I'm so keen to learn more and have just treated myself to a beautiful pair of skates that were on sale 😁

I'd love to find some like minded people who are getting into it like me, or even some more experienced people who can reassure me that I will get better and lose the bambi legs eventually 😂

Show me your skates! 😁😁

Well you only live once, and honestly we have beginners of all ages including in their sixties at our local lessons.

FlutterbButterfly · 03/12/2022 22:18

I'm the granddaughter of a British RS champion and record holder, I can't skate though!

jamfirstcreamsecond · 03/12/2022 22:24

Another ex derby player here. Loved it but the pandemic kinda killed it for me. Was pretty much coaching only towards the end. Still got my R3's in my skate bag though and should dust them off . You can't beat the feeling of the wind in your hair whilst skating. In the NW so lucky to have a few places to practice. The comedy carpet at Blackpool is beautifully smooth!

winewolfhowls · 04/12/2022 08:08

I'm in the NW too, and you're right that comedy carpet is smooooth. I prefer indoors generally but like a mooch around Southport along the front or Lytham St Anne's. Real lack of smooth surfaces in our region tbh, I'm so jealous of the Americans who post about going on a long 'trail' skate.

winewolfhowls · 04/12/2022 08:09

Anyone getting some Xmas skates or accessories? I've got my eyes on some derby laces

JamMakingWannaBe · 04/12/2022 10:46

My daughter got skates for her recent Birthday and I've decided to join her! I'm waiting for delivery of my skates, indoor wheels and my helmet. I'm a bit worried about the sizing of my skates but hoping they fit.

We are going to weekly lessons (I've borrowed skates so far) and have another roller disco booked this month.

I keep looking out for suitable local paths but we're happy indoors for now.

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/12/2022 11:11

Our Local indoors skatepark has a session today for just inlines and quads.

DD goes there quite a bit and loves their girls night.

Agree with that wrist guards are a must too Wink

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 04/12/2022 12:22

Do it @DuncanBiscuits! You have the skates, you're there already!

squashyhat · 04/12/2022 12:34

Wow this thread takes me back! I lived in South East London in the mid-80s and a bunch of us used to go to a dilapidated old rink off Stamford Street in Waterloo every Monday night (long since demolished). I never got very good but I loved it.

Rollerbird · 04/12/2022 17:39

I wish the weather was good!
I know a rink but it's about 45 minutes away. I've been a couple of times.
I got skates on black friday

JohnsShirt · 04/12/2022 17:48

I really want to do this, but can't find anywhere nearby.
If anyone knows a place in/near Glasgow please let me know.

GirlWithTheYellowHat · 04/12/2022 19:09

Another roller derby player here.
There's RollerStop in Glasgow and a couple of derby teams if you fancied trying that.
There used to be a great rink in Cumbernauld but it closed during the pandemic and never reopened.
There's also united Sk8s which do mobile roller discos all over Scotland

JohnsShirt · 04/12/2022 21:02

I'm not looking for roller derby, at least not yet, just somewhere to skate.

Check out RollerStop for some general skating. It's not far from The Quay

Thought I'd give an update as I've had my first skate session of 2022 and I'm starting to see some real progress which is so exciting!

Haven't been skating outside since my last update since the weather has been so awful (unsurprisingly, it is winter after all 😂) but managed to sneak in a quick hour at the local sport centre last week and spent ages in my kitchen today.

I can now just about do:

The Zero
Scorpion & Arabesque - both of these in a straight line and turning in a circle (spiral)
Heel transition
Toe transition
Pivot turn/transition
Mohawk turn
Heel switches (not quite sure on the name!)
Compass turns
Bunny hop
180 jump (but only when stationary)

Attempted side surf which I kinda got but not enough room in my kitchen to do it properly 😂

Going to the sports centre again on Sunday so fingers crossed I smooth out all of the above and get them looking better 😁

I would try and find a Roller Derby group. My DD's go to a local group and the women's group train afterwards. They will teach you to skate well.

Me! Just seen this post when searching for something else.

I'm lucky enough to be in the North West so we can sometimes visit Wigan roller rink which is a great size

There's a great Reddit skate community.

Anyone getting skate related Christmas presents for themselves or others?
(Remember to avoid Impalas). I'm looking to upgrade my plate for the first time.

I want to go here. My little girl has learnt to skate this week. I get so jealous everytime she goes out on hers. Hopefully will get here soon xx

winewolfhowls · 24/01/2023 20:39

You should definitely go, hire some skates and have fun! Very friendly people are skaters I find!

squashedalmondcroissant · 04/04/2023 09:18

Hello again!

Had a really lovely skate the other day to try out a new pair of skates, just got a very cheap set in the sales because I wanted to try out a 'flat' style rather than ones with a heel.

They're so comfortable! Maybe not as good for dance/jam skating as your weight isn't as far forward and so you have to be conscious of not putting all your weight on the heels and falling backwards 😬 Other than that I really like them!

One thing that's a bit tricky about skating outside is, unsurprisingly, other people. I get that people will obviously look because it's unusual but I get a bit self conscious and tend to fall over/make more mistakes. Plus I seem to be free entertainment for people's kids lol 😂

Does anyone else find this? I'm not sure whether or engage with them or try to just ignore and tune them out. I feel a bit rude ignoring them but sometimes I just want to focus or listen to my music without being super aware that I'm being watched!

It's dogs crossing in front of me that makes me panic outside, plus the way you pick up speed fast on a seemingly flat surface.

Rollerbird · 12/04/2023 21:01

I find that dogs seem to bark at me or try to chase me in the park.

I had a blip in skating since November.
I've been struggling with negativity
I went out today for about 20 minutes and really enjoyed it. Just pootling round
