To want to talk about roller skating!

Not an aibu (sorry!) but posting for traffic as I don't know where else to post!

Anyone else into roller skating?

A friend of mine took me to a rink with her for her birthday and I loved it! It's very scary but I'm so keen to learn more and have just treated myself to a beautiful pair of skates that were on sale 😁

I'd love to find some like minded people who are getting into it like me, or even some more experienced people who can reassure me that I will get better and lose the bambi legs eventually 😂

Show me your skates! 😁😁

Me! Just seen this post when searching for something else.

I'm lucky enough to be in the North West so we can sometimes visit Wigan roller rink which is a great size

There's a great Reddit skate community.

Anyone getting skate related Christmas presents for themselves or others?
(Remember to avoid Impalas). I'm looking to upgrade my plate for the first time.

Newmum738 · 16/10/2022 07:39

I got my skates out again last year and learnt a few new things from You Tube. I'd like to do more but not had much time so far!

winewolfhowls · 16/10/2022 21:31

It's hard to make time when us Brits have such gravelly uneven roads and pavements. On all those YouTube videos they're all having a skate outside their house on a wide flat sidewalk, probably while dinners in the oven. It's a whole morning or afternoon out for us!

Rollerbird · 20/10/2022 21:10

I'm looking to sell an impulse ebay buy of moxi lollys that are too tight for me 😭
I've got suregrip rebels (another impulse when I wanted to do Derby but was too chicken 😂)
If I get a good price for the lollys I'm going to get something else.
Ive been practicing much more lately and really enjoying it.
I want to get new wheels but unsure what to get.

winewolfhowls · 21/10/2022 22:31

I've got roll line wheels for inside, they are fab.

Lollies have a good resale price, have you tried the Facebook group for buying and selling second hand skates?

Rollerbird · 22/10/2022 14:54

Which roll lines have you got? @winewolfhowls

winewolfhowls · 22/10/2022 18:24

The second to hardest roll line Ice I think, sorry I can't remember which, at least 94s but I did remember also reading that their wheels were harder than the numbers suggest iykwim.

I’m really keen to get skating and this thread has totally inspired me! I got some from Facebook a few years back and my ex mocked me for it, but now I’m ready to give it a go again. I lived in skates when I was a kid, I lived at the top of a hill and would skate down it until I hit the shops at the bottom 😂

My mum used to tell me off for resting the trucks on the dining table cross-bar during dinner.

I looked at joining a roller derby team but they train on Sundays and I have to work weekends. Well worth seeking one out for those wanting to learn though - they have learner courses for how to skate, stop and fall safely.

Oh my goodness I love rollerskating so much! I used to be a skate marshal at our local rink when I was a teenager and skated all the time. I'm not the best skater in the world but good enough and it is absolutely my calm place. Unfortunately there are very few decent rinks left in my part of the world. If I had the money I would love to open one so teens had somewhere safe to go.

Notaderrysgirl · 22/10/2022 19:08

Please please please wear helmets people! I’ve been roller skating for almost a year and play in a roller derby team, check if where you live have a team as they may do boot camps and allow you to join so you can train and practice :)

i practice in a disused car park, keep your eyes peeled I’m sure you will find somewhere, good luck

MorganKitten · 22/10/2022 19:19

I play roller derby so talk about skates a lot!

GoodOnPaper · 22/10/2022 19:19

We have a weekly roller disco at our local leisure centre which is so much fun and people of all ages and abilities skating round. Great to have a smooth surface to get going on and they have games (and races if you're brave!!!) and do some short teaching sessions if you stay on later which are really helpful. I definitely recommend them if you can find one near you.

We also found some quite good tips and videos on this site www.rookieskates.com/en/skate-know-how

I've skated since I was quite young, just out and about with my sisters, and I love the sense of freedom you have when you get get going. Definitely more painful falling over these days tho!

Rollerbird · 24/10/2022 18:25

I've just ordered rollerbones team wheels. 57mm 98a
Never used hard wheels
I'm officially EXCITED 😀

winewolfhowls · 25/10/2022 22:03

I think I've had them before, good choice! Don't forget to buy the bearings too (don't mean to be patronising, I didn't realise this until mine arrived)!

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 26/10/2022 06:43

5 hours in a neck brace with blocks placed around my head and laid on a spinal board whilst waiting to see if I'd broken my neck, after falling whilst roller skating was definitely enough to put me off for life!! Not to mention the side effects I still get 6 years later from the severe concussion I also gave myself from smashing my head onto a wooden floor. Used to love roller blading as a kid though!!

winewolfhowls · 28/10/2022 22:29

So sorry to hear that, it must have been so scary! I'm a big fan of all the protection!

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 25/11/2022 13:36

I'm off to a roller disco tonight! Love it.

IclimbedSnowdon · 25/11/2022 14:09

I skated 5 times a week at a north London leisure centre, in its huge great hall all through my teens. Had Adidas skates and several sets of wheels. I lived in Hertfordshire and often skated the 20 miles home with my friends.
Always preferred skating backwards and loved the girls fast skating sessions.

Once I had my children I took them, and although I'd not skated for years it was like I'd never stopped. The kids are now grown and I would love to give it another try, but fear injury as I'm that much older now.
Looks like it's making a revival, which is great!

squashedalmondcroissant · 30/11/2022 21:50

Had an amazing skate session today, I found a flat area at my local beach which is covered in beach detritus so not perfect but definitely good enough! I was out for 2 hours 😁

I've made some good progress! Have now nailed:

The Hez
Disco spins
Spread eagles
The Zero

Still working on transitions but I've managed to crack going backwards. Just need to smooth it out and get less wobbly 😁 Attempted my first toe-toe manual and my first jump and was successful at both!

Oh, also tried the cabbage a few times which I really enjoy and my one foot balances are getting better so long as I manage to overcome the fear and get out of my own head 😂

Its so nice to see other mumsnetters that rollerskate and play roller derby!! Carparks are a good shout, especially multistory ones as they tend to be tarmac or other smooth surface.

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 01/12/2022 13:54

I don't know what any of these are, so I will google them... but well done! Lots of flat spaces where I am, but it's all very overlooked, so I don't feel like I can practice new stuff without an audience. 😆

winewolfhowls · 02/12/2022 19:47

What's the cabbage 🥬?

Rollerbird · 02/12/2022 21:04

Good going! @squashedalmondcroissant
I can sort of do disco spins and spread Eagle (not in a straight line-need to keep working on hip opening) and hez. Do you have a good tutorial for the zero? Also curious about what the cabbage is!
I have tried inlines but they are so hard! I can T-Stop on quads but not inlines. Also cant even do bubbles/lemons with a criss cross in front on inline skates. Show how much I rely on loose trucks!

DuncanBiscuits · 02/12/2022 21:08

This thread is making me wistful. I went everywhere on roller boots as a kid. I had those blue ones with a rainbow on them, and a few years ago DH bought me some, but I’ve never dared use them…
