Speeding under 77 in a 70 is still liable to a fine, yes?!

Please settle argument with friend.

He reckons if you do a little over 70 on the motorway you don't get fined - he reckons you get a bit of leeway and only get fined if you're doing more than 10% over.

So 22 in a 20 zone, no fine. 33 in a 30, ok.

YANBU, he's wrong. You can get fined for doing anything over the speed limit

YABU - he's right. A little over never results in a fine.

At the last speed awareness course I did, they said that because speedometers give you a few mph to play with, some police forces have decided to fine at 1mph over the limit, on the basis that your speedometer will already be saying higher than that.

I was just going to say this, people saying they got fined for 21 in a 20, or 32 in a 30 were probably fined because the police know you were more likely do 25/36 ish.

It's like when you go past those flashing slow down speed signs, there's one on my road and if I drive past it at bang on 20 it always says 16. I've tried it out and for it to say 20 I have to do 24, so to get fined for doing 22 I would have been doing 26. There's a big difference in safety between 20 and 26.

Can any of the posters claiming her to have been fined for 32 in 30 / 52 in a 50 etc please share the paperwork that confirm this?

Police guidance and the thread hold for a court prosecution is very clear and 32 in a 30 would not be prosecuted.

Id love to see the evidence that it is, as that could be challenged through the courts.

PurpleDaisies · 26/08/2022 07:31

There were people on my speed awareness course who were doing 32mph in a 30mph zone. I was told that they no longer allowed the 10% over the limit because of improvements to technology.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 26/08/2022 07:33

I’m not sure about this, in Yorkshire I did a course for doing 74 in a 70 though it was some years ago

MintJulia · 26/08/2022 07:45

Most police forces have clear and publicly available policy. I doubt it's 10% but inaccuracies in speedometers mean most areas will allow 2-3%.

But that's a margin for error. You aren't intended to drive to it.

No, as it was well over a year ago and DH has since binned the letter.

He got a fine and a speed awareness course for going 32 in a 30.

Guidance is just guidance, surely. If you're over the limit, you're over the limit 🤷🏻‍♀️

I believe (and I could be wrong) that a) car speedometers are set a little higher than they actually are, so if it says 30 you’re probably only doing 27/28, and also they tend not to fine if you’re less than 10% over. These two things combined mean you’re unlikely to be fined if you’re less than 10% over.

i was told all this almost 20’years who though so it could easily be wrong! It’s generally the rule I live by and I have yet to receive a fine, though I do slow down if I see an actual camera…(and this post has probably jinxed it and I’ll get a fine next week!!)

I was also thinking that the 10% was about the speedometer inaccuracy than any leeway from the authorities.

It may be a bit of both.

That’s quite an interesting take.

It’s definitely illegal, but doing 71mph up an empty M11 at 10pm in mid-July being “disgusting”? Don’t be so ridiculous.

That's mumsnet for you.

68mph = safe
69mph = safe
70mph = safe
71mph = disgusting, reckless ,dead kittens everywhere

I suppose I’d failed to consider the very real possibilities that a large group of nuns with baskets of kittens all jump down from a bridge ahead of me.

I feel awful now at not realizing the seriousness of the offence.

I've just done my first ever speeding course in 40 years of blameless driving for doing 32mph. A new speed camera at the entrance to a village (not in the village) caught me as I was slowing. I always have my car beeper on to the speed limit and it too did not realise the 30mph zone had changed. 3 others on the same course were all the same camera.

How did you manage to not see a bright yellow box?

What, you're going to take on the righteous fight against The Authorities against people who only broke the law a little bit, so you need to gather evidence?

I know people like online. But "I got fined for speeding" seems like a weird lie to brag about. A quick Google confirms that the 10 per cent "rule" is in fact guidance. A fine is not a prosecution in the courts, anyway, not sure why you have conflated the two? If it reached court it would be non payment of the fine ...
