Friends Raffle

AIBU not too buy a raffle ticket for an item I do not want for €30? My friend keeps sending me a link to a raffle she is doing but I don't actually want the item she is raffling off. She is set to make over €1000 for an item that costs around €300 if she can sell all the lines. Things are tight at the moment and I just don't have €30 to basically piss away, I just spent a fortune getting three kids back to school.

Do I just continue to ignore the links (4 texts with the link in the last week) or give in a buy a ticket? Also do I come across as stingy by not buying one. I am in noway a stingy or mean person.

Ignore or say at this point you don’t have the spare cash. At the best of times it would be tone deaf to badger friends in this way for personal financial gain.

kweeble · 25/08/2022 19:14

It also sounds illegal!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/08/2022 19:16

I can't understand why people give money to these things.
No yanbu to ignore.

WiddlinDiddlin · 25/08/2022 19:18

Don't you need a licence to run a raffle, its basically gambling..

Just say 'I have no desire to 'win' that item even if it were free, please stop spamming me about it!'

yes you do

SparrowsNest · 25/08/2022 19:29

Absolutely do not spend £30 on a raffle ticket for a prize you do not want.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 25/08/2022 19:32

My niece by marriage does this (maybe not a £30 item) strangely enough it's always family members who win the stuff. Bar me cos I refuse to participate in shite like that

Tiani4 · 25/08/2022 19:36

No , yanbu - just keep ignoring

If she hassles you, say "no thanks, i have other charities I already donate to"

If I don't have £30 nor want the item no way would I donate unless it was a charity I wanted to support and I had the spare money and liked the prize .

It doesn't sound like this is, and really you can donate to your own charities the amount you want to, £5 of that suits you! This sounds like a she keeps the money so really she's asking you to give her £30 for chance of winning something you don't want anyway, fat chance. Just delete those texts as they come through. Or reply "not for me, can you stop texting me the link please"

imnotthatkindofmum · 25/08/2022 19:39

If she's selling tickets online then she needs a license. Who is she raising money for? You make sound like she's doing it for herself?

The only time you don't need a license is if you are selling and drawing the tickets at the same event eg school fair, jumble sake etc.

PatsyJStone · 25/08/2022 19:40

Keep ignoring. Also £30 for a £300 item is not really proportionate, especially if you don't want it. A raffle ticket for me is £1 or £5.

She can't honestly think people are going to buy all her tickets if they do the maths.

Agree! I occasionally have bought £25 raffle tickets and the prize is a car!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 25/08/2022 19:44

Sounds like an mlm scam type thing...I have family members who do these 'raffles'...what a load of old shit...i just ignore.

GlueyMooey · 25/08/2022 19:47

Of course YANBU. Just ignore and if she asks just say you don't want to. No need to explain or apologise.

Meraas · 25/08/2022 19:49

It’s not even for charity? Fuck no. Tell her you can’t afford 30E lottery tickets for a prize that isn’t even cash.

Georgeskitchen · 25/08/2022 19:53

Just ignore. Too much money to throw away on something you don't want/need with the cost of living crisis

user1471457751 · 25/08/2022 20:02

You could always tell her that if she doesn't stop spamming you then you will report her illegal raffle to the gambling commission

ginghamstarfish · 25/08/2022 20:17

£30 is a lot and it sound a bit dishonest, just ignore.

fdkc · 25/08/2022 20:37

Thanks all, I feel better just ignoring the texts now.

I had no idea raffles were illegal, we are in Ireland so maybe not illegal here?

The item is an electronic that she won and doesn't want, it definitely isn't worth more than €400 max, you could possibly get it for €300. The raffle numbers are the 46 numbers of the Irish lotto and the number of the bonus ball on Saturday night wins.

Doesn't look like it's working out for her though cause she only has 18 lines sold, maybe that's why she is spamming me with the link.

Oh and the money raised is for her and her only, not for charity. These raffles are actually going on all the time, I see them on my social media alot, especially over the last year or two.

Your friend is a CF, essentially she’s going round asking all her friends and family for £30 and won’t be paying it back! It’s one thing to raise money for charity but not just to ask people for money and pretend it’s for their benefit.

AnnieJ1985 · 25/08/2022 20:51

You need a license here in Ireland too, but I see loads of these on FB most weeks. 30 for a line is madness!

DumDeeDoh · 25/08/2022 20:55

You need a licence in Ireland too for a raffle (or to sell ny tickets for a fun run for example, a church gate collection, a bag pack). She is a checky f.

Yes you do and be licensed by the gambling commission, strict rules on how much thry can be sold for, strict rules on how and where they can be sold.
I was involved in a raffle for Help for Hero’s, my name was on the tickets, (another rule)
couldn't sell them for more than £1.00. DSB Police checked and after it was over I was audited. We raised 20k.

£30 a ticket?! Absolutely not! If someone I knew was doing a charity raffle for £5 or less I am would probably have a go even if I didn't really want the prize. But 30, not for charity and an item I don't want.... No.
