Colleague constantly eating all the time

shewhoisnotme · 24/08/2022 22:48

We share a desk.

She comes in at 9. Usually a McDonald's breakfast bun of some kind

Snacks on cake, sausage rolls, meats 🍰

Lunch is chicken and chips, McDonald's, KFC. Loads of crisps for a snack after at her desk

AIBU to be annoyed? She is constantly eating! The drums drive me up the wall. They edge onto my side

OP posts:

In my original reply, I hadn't seen that the person was in a reception type role. In that situation it does seem odd that it's allowed.

For more general office roles though, I've never experienced a ban at eating at the desk. Or having a designated break time or break room. Meetings are often booked over what would generally be considered a 'lunch time' so many people I know eat at their desk at random times while working.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/08/2022 07:02

is this her first job?

Quincythequince · 25/08/2022 07:08

Justine878 · 25/08/2022 06:58

And this is a fat shaming comment. Just holding it up as an example for people who still don't get it!

The OP mentioned she was 15 stone! You are the one accusing this of being a fat bashing thread so the OP has said ‘I’m 15 stone’

Weight wasn’t mentioned up until this point.

Get over this notion of everything being fat-bashing - it’s now really becoming a bit pathetic.

Not everything is about fat people.

Most people probably don’t think about someone else’s size on a day to day basis, this situation is no different.

Constabtly eating fried food in a shared space is rank - whether a size 12 or a size 24

NoSquirrels · 25/08/2022 07:12

I’d hate this too. And your manager sounds shit. No one should be eating at a front desk/reception. Urgh.

Quincythequince · 25/08/2022 07:13

The first one, after you accused people
of fat shaming.
This is a shitty comment yes, but nowhere before you posted accusing people
of doing so, has there been one.

You of course just seem to want to bash (non-fat - that’s your unfounded assumption) people for having a conversation about a vile habit.

balalake · 25/08/2022 07:16

The smell would be enough for me. And if you are concerned about weight (as opposed to just criticising), then some helpful constructive comments (said privately not in hearing of others) seem reasonable to me.

Justine878 · 25/08/2022 07:16

Did you forget to name change? Was that supposed to look like 2 different people responding to me? Just so it looked like there were multiple people in agreement?

dottiedodah · 25/08/2022 07:16

Apart from the mess and awful smell, how does she get her work done? This would annoy me terribly I'm afraid (and I'm not averse to a cheeky burger, but at lunchtime!)I would speak to your manager again .I am sure very few workplaces would be happy about this!

CrabbitBastard · 25/08/2022 07:17

And this is why I WFH now.

Can do what the hell I like without anyone complaining. Don't have to deal with other annoying colleagues either!

Justine878 · 25/08/2022 07:19

That last comment was for @Quincythequince

What are you talking about? I haven’t name changed - I never do.

RosiePosie27 · 25/08/2022 07:21

@shewhoisnotme I can’t believe she is allowed to eat on reception! How unprofessional to have mess everywhere and it’s gross to answer the phone with a full mouth.

It sounds as though your co worker was not taught basic manners. I would go back to your line manager and say this is absolutely vile and intolerable and you shouldn’t have to put up with it. If she wants to eat, that’s fine but away from front of house. I side with you OP

pictish · 25/08/2022 07:23

The constant eating of greasy, smelly food would piss me off. I’d get annoyed by the mess, the smell, the greasy phone, the chewing and slurping and yes…I’d be annoyed by her constant homage to fast food and junk. I don’t like KFC or MCDonalds and would hate to have them in my face as standard.
I wouldn’t complain about her but I’d be thinking about another job somewhere that doesn’t resemble a municipal park bin. Yuck.

I don’t give a crap who responds to you in agreement with me or otherwise.

Your accusatory posts in the face of no evidence whatsoever is a bit <sigh, here we go again>.

Show me one fat bashing post or a post mentioning weight before your accusation.

Go on. Or are you just trying to be nasty to slim people, even though nobody knows anybody else’s size, except the OPs because she responded to you.

You’re pathetic. Accusing people of gay-bashing and now failed name changing just because you don’t like what’s being said.

You can of course not read and post here…free will and all that.

Quincythequince · 25/08/2022 07:26

*fat (not gay)

NiceTwin · 25/08/2022 07:28

I used to sit across from a fella who picked his nose and ate it 🤢, I'd take KFC and Mc'D's over that any day.

I would have a pack of antibacterial wipes and grab one to answer the phone and then wipe down.

pd339 · 25/08/2022 07:34

ThinWomansBrain · 24/08/2022 22:57

keep a box of wet wipes/telephone wipes by the phone and pointedly wipe the phone before answering

Yes, passive aggression is always the best way to go!

HRTQueen · 25/08/2022 07:35

That’s rank

I love KFC and MacDonalds but I don’t want to smell it all day the smell does linger

I had to approach someone at work as staff were complaining about their food this was after an email was sent to all staff reminding them that their share an office and to be considerate of others when having lunch/snacks (problem is we did eat at our desks as so busy) In the end it was no hot food at desks and again reminded to be considerate

Justine878 · 25/08/2022 07:36

fannyfan · 25/08/2022 04:26

This is clearly bollocks. What person can eat at the front Desk?

Just another fat bashing thread where teeny tiny people can come and feel better about themselves

@Quincythequince

My first post was in response to this post, agreeing with it

Your posts are excessive and quite worrying. I am free to post whatever I want to (as long as it doesn't break any rules - like say name-changing to create the illusion of multiple people in agreement). Now that is a whole different conversation.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/08/2022 07:39

I really hate eating at desks I think it’s revolting. Answering the shared phone with food on hands is 🤢 so yanbu

But it would also be gross if it was avocados and poached egg so yabu for judging what she eats.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/08/2022 07:39

Dh worked with a young woman like this. Constant eating and noise all day. Drove him bonkers. She’d come in with food on the go already and carry on eating biscuits or crisps all morning until lunch.

If he had a cheese salad for lunch she’d say “ooh, cheese?” In a concerned voice because dh has diabetes and has to watch his weight.

Dh is slim and she’d already been offered a gastric band at 20 so I don’t think a cheese salad was much of an issue.

Constant snacking is why I’ll never go to the cinema again, all you hear is crunching, packets rustling, drinks being slurped and ice rattling inside them.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/08/2022 07:41

In the end it was no hot food at desks and again reminded to be considerate

Sandwiches though, the crumbs lodge in the keyboard.

Before anyone comments I agree it’s something that I’m uptight about, but I genuinely don’t see the point of eating at your desk. Just take 10 minutes away.

Diamondwhiteandthe80s · 25/08/2022 07:43

I don’t like hearing other folk eat, so this would annoy me

Maireas · 25/08/2022 07:44

What kind of job is this?

What on earth are you on about!
I posted multiple times because I disagreed with you (and the post to which you responded), and then saw the one ‘fat-bashing’ (as you say comment), thereafter so responded to that too, and then responded to you using that as elan example of fat-bashing, despite there being none up to the point you posted your comment. Pretty simple really.

Quite worrying are my posts 🤣 Ok then, if you say so.

You can of course post what you like, as can I. I don’t name change, wouldn’t know how to although could work it out, but the mild paranoia there is a bit 🙄 and regardless as to your ‘they’re all ganging up on fat people mentality’ I am so so so tired of threads being policed and shut down by people accusing others of fat bashing. People can talk about what they like when they like and it’s not always targeted either directly or indirectly at fat people.

Hence my multiple responses. Does that cla
