What do you consider a ‘high’ earner?

In my head, a ‘high earner’ is someone who never really has to think about money. So, perhaps £200K and up. However, I’ve recently seen threads where people on circa £50K are described as ‘high earners’. As a Londoner, that seems like madness to me, but these things are obviously very dependent on where you are.

So, I’m curious. Where do you live and what would you consider a high salary?

I never understand these threads, people argue over and over that being in the top 10% -15% of earners doesnt make them a high earner because they have to buy stuff.

This. ^^

StillGoingStrongToday · 24/08/2022 19:20

It’s so subjective that I really couldn’t put a number on it.

If you live in rural Pakistan then £20k per year. If you drive in F1 then £40m per year.

C152 · 24/08/2022 19:20

London. £100k+

LionessesRules · 24/08/2022 19:20

Twice average salary for the region.
So, averaged across the UK about 60k, but with regional differences.

BlackbirdsSinging · 24/08/2022 19:22

Anyone who earns more than me.

I’m not asking for objective fact, though. Im
asking for people’s (very) subjective opinions based on their location and personal circumstances. It’s interesting.

big differences by region and age in median income complicate the simple ‘you’re rich because you earn more than me’ narrative.

This.

If you're in the higher tax bracket, you're a high earner. Being in London or moving in circles where everyone around you earns huge amounts doesn't magically make it not huge amounts.

CherrySmiler · 24/08/2022 19:24

Net income of £10k a month or more. Maybe 200k pa to allow for pension deductions.

PestorPeston · 24/08/2022 19:24

Decide what percentage of earners are classified as high maybe top 5% or 10% and look it up.

The basic annual salary for an MP from 1 April 2022 is £84,144. They also have generous allowances as do many at this wage bracket. Are they the high earner benchmark?

£1m per year then, which would be upper decile at work.

gogohmm · 24/08/2022 19:24

£75k - more than double average income. Obviously money goes further not in SE but ultimately it's still a lot higher than many in the SE.

Rosehugger · 24/08/2022 19:25

I would say I am earning 75k - puts me in the top 5-10% of salaries. However, the top 1%, 0.5%, 0.1% will be on astronomical sums and much more than the rest of us.

I don’t personally consider MPs to be high earners, no.

I would think £100k is pretty comfortable, and high earner would be £250k and up as that's £10k take home monthly - but it depends on lifestyle and outgoings, I know others would have a very different barometer.

Labgirl123 · 24/08/2022 19:28

In my industry in Ireland I would say 100k+ Is a high earner. Graduates in my lab start on 40k!

Flutterbybudget · 24/08/2022 19:28

Average UK wage is less than £30,000 - to me, that makes anyone earning over £50,000 as being a “high earner” compared to the majority of the population.

Rosehugger · 24/08/2022 19:32

I disagree, it can be objective. By definition the top 10% are high earners as they are the top 10%! But there is a huge difference when you get to the top 1%, 0.5% etc as I said earlier.

Greater London, £250k minimum to be considered a high earner

Same here. This is what I would say most in our area are probably on.

StillGoingStrongToday · 24/08/2022 19:32

What do you think that it is then OP?

AntlerRose · 24/08/2022 19:33

If you dont want objective facts and just my own opinion i dont think there are any high earners on paye.

High earners are those with passive incomes whose money just comes from investments.

topcat2014 · 24/08/2022 19:33

Confusing too on MN because a lot of folk will talk about an income which in fact is combined for two people.

I'm on 60 k, and consider that reasonably good. Not high though for my role (Chief finance officer)

Been paying higher rate tax for 18 years, which is a privilege of sorts

LondonQueen · 24/08/2022 19:33

Live in Yorkshire but I'm from the South East where earnings are much higher as is the cost of living, would consider £100k+ a high earner.

Livinginanotherworld · 24/08/2022 19:35

I wouldn’t consider 50k a high earner. I think 100k would begin to put someone into that category. I also think they need to change the tax band to reflect that too.

Genuinely? I’ve a fair few friends on £2m plus per year on PAYE, is that not high?

Biggest I know personally got £80m PAYE in their best year. I’d put that well into “high earner” in most people’s books.
