What do you consider a ‘high’ earner?

In my head, a ‘high earner’ is someone who never really has to think about money. So, perhaps £200K and up. However, I’ve recently seen threads where people on circa £50K are described as ‘high earners’. As a Londoner, that seems like madness to me, but these things are obviously very dependent on where you are.

So, I’m curious. Where do you live and what would you consider a high salary?

I can’t remember the source of this data, but I believe that 10% of earners will spend at least one year in the top 1%.

It certainty seems plausible, given the way earnings rise (and then sometimes fall) over the course of a career.

That’s very interesting and does seem plausible.

Household income or individually?

I tend to think in terms of individual salary, and that’s what I had I mind when I posted. However, household income is probably a much more useful metric.

This thread is wild. I live in East London zone 2, own a 2 bed flat (high mortgage), early 30s. Our household income is around 110k. All my friends are designers/artists and so don't earn more than 50-60k. We all live a comfortable lifestyle, take multiple holidays a year, go out/eat out a lot. I would say that we generally feel like highish earners compared with a lot of people who live and work in London - very conscious that there are vast amounts of people who are on much less.

I only know one person who earns 250k and they work in some kind of wealth/investment role. They earn vastly more than anyone else I know (and probably will ever know) and looking at statistics must be in a tiny minority of mega-high earners in the country.

To me a high earner in London is anyone on 70k upwards. Anyone saying otherwise is living in a bubble and should check their privilege.

Exactly. I think some comments are clearly assumptions especially the law fields. There's a person on here and other threads quite clearly stating they do not earn any where near 250k. Personally I think it's wild to assume that lawyers earn that type of money commonly in UK.

I don’t think anyone’s said that’s what all (or even most) lawyers earn. Just that people in corporate law (specifically magic circle) can earn that.

Not worrying about money is so subjective. For example, I've never worried about the cost of a skiing holiday. Never given it a second thought....

... But that's because I've never been on a skiing holiday and don't particularly want to. It's different from worrying about basics if it's a luxury that is just not on your radar.

It's also about personality - some people worry more than others, independently of whether there is reason to worry (and yes of course, many worry because objectively they're on a financial knife edge).

Great post.

It really is relative to what others around you earn.

Although presumably the people on 6 figure salaries must have some awareness of the barrister or barman who gets them their coffee or wine / the cleaner in their office / the porter in the hospital / t person that delivers their takeaway / the chap that sells newspapers on the street corner / the chap that empties the bins in the park / the care assistant that gets people washed and dressed every morning / the EYP who looks after their children whilst they are earning these megabucks. Surely nobody can really think that a 6 figure salary isn't a great salary which is earned by only a tiny, tiny number of people ? People can't live in that much of a bubble can they?

I think maybe they can. The lack of perspective at play in this thread is hilarious.

@Kite22 I can only speak for myself (and I’m not on six figures, but my husband is), but I’m aware that I earn more than a the majority of the population, yes.

250k 😂😂😂

I honestly don’t know Wtaf I’d do with that. Do we mean one earner or joint?

Crikeyalmighty · 25/08/2022 18:41

I would say this is more about family income really than individual. 50k is bugger all really in south east if it's total income before tax.

I would say in everywhere except south east family income of £5.5 monthly after tax is high earners. £7k monthly in south east and London

£200k household income. Mortgage £2.5k a month. Cheshire. Kids aren't private schooled. We don't take luxurious foreign travel. We are squeezed.

How? What on earth are you doing with it all?

Unable to cope with finances or spending more than they earn.

@JustMarriedBecca how much are your healthcare, car loans, pensions, investments etc?

As a single person with a step-child (so has 2 other parents who provide the bulk of financial support) on 29k who can live fairly comfortably, I view 50k plus as high. Not "ultra-rich, will never want for anything" but certainly significantly above the average UK earner. I'm in the South-East so 50k would still not provide great possibilities for mortgage on a house, but relative to what most people are dealing with it's high. It's all pretty relative to circumstances and perspective though. I would say though surely 200k is ultra-high, like 1% of people, not just "high"?

JustMarriedBecca · 25/08/2022 19:32

We have no car loans, we can't afford it. Pensions mainly. We have no private healthcare either.

Same here. If we each went down to that we’d have to cut back heavily on saving for retirement, maybe give up a home.

Louise0701 · 25/08/2022 20:26

@JustMarriedBecca something is going very, very wrong with your finances.

It certainly is. They’re burning through £8.5k a month after the mortgage is paid. No cars, no nice holidays, no school fees or health insurance, what the fuck are they doing with it?
