To think food service employees shouldn't mess with peoples orders?

Saw a Tiktok earlier of a barista claiming she "messes" with the orders of "rude" customers. And there were thousands of comments in agreement with her and saying they also do similar 😧

The examples she gave were: Putting full fat milk in the customers coffee, rather than semi-skimmed. Giving them regular coffee rather than decaf, and vice versa. Serving them carrot cake rather than the chocolate cake they ordered. Etc...

I know she's not necessarily contaminating the food as such, but I think petty acts like this are totally unprofessional.

I understand some customers can be rude, I've worked in retail, but I just got on with it, I didn't feel the need to mess with anyones food for 'revenge'.

AIBU to think this is petty behaviour and food service employees should maintain some professionalism?

She sounds like a frigging nutcase. How rude can you actually be when ordering a coffee, anyway? The scope for outrageous rudeness isn't that wide?

Trisolaris · 24/08/2022 13:38

It can be dangerous and make people ill. Sone people are sensitive to caffeine. Diabetics need to know carb content of their food so getting something with more or particularly less sugar than expected can really mess with their blood sugar.

Sunnyqueen · 24/08/2022 13:39

Oh I learnt this years ago working in the food service industry whilst I was at college - never fuck with people who serve you food

FlorettaB · 24/08/2022 13:42

If you’re rude to people preparing your food and drink, full fat milk should be the least of your concerns …

Mylifemyrulez · 24/08/2022 13:47

I used to work in McDonald's as a teenager and if a customer was vile to me I'd either half fill the chips or pick the burger up really tight so it left a thumb print in the top.
Sorry not sorry.

What's an example of a customer being vile to you? Not denying it happened, just wondering how vile you can actually be whilst ordering a burger?

CryCeratops · 24/08/2022 13:50

Yes, it’s petty and unprofessional.

And in a worst case scenario, it could make someone ill.

OneTC · 24/08/2022 13:50

You know they shouldn't, but if you've worked in food service you know there are plenty of people who will.

I have a strict no complaints policy anywhere you're actually going to eat the food 😂

Arbesque · 24/08/2022 13:52

It's dangerous and could make someone very ill.

Soubriquet · 24/08/2022 13:52

Messing with food orders is a dangerous slope.

They might have a sensitivity to caffeine which is why they ordered de-caff, or they could be allergic to something.

I know people are rude and you sometimes wish to get your own back, but messing with food this way is just not acceptable. It’s down right dangerous.

“Accidentally” squashing it, or not filling to the top, or adding more ice so there’s less drink, is not as bad.

DilemmaDelilah · 24/08/2022 14:02

I can't have caffeine as it messes with my heart. I try not to eat sugar as I have type 2 diabetes. I have skimmed milk as I am fat and don't want to get fatter. Messing with my food order would be huge for me. I order what I want to eat, and what I can eat. It is not up to somebody else to decide that they can give me something other than I have ordered. In my opinion, anyone that does that ought to be sacked in the spot.

I work at mcds and you’d be amazed

ive been sexually assaulted 5 times
had a teenage lad offer ‘to break my teenage dd apart’ (we’d been in about 15 minutes before my shift)
I’ve been screamed at
spat at
called a ‘retard’ more times than I can count
threatened with a knife
had the worlds rudest people demand things that are out of my control-and complain to head office about me-even though I couldn’t do what they demand
had fingers clicked at me
stalked away from work
some woman screamed at me because I couldn’t open the upstairs-my manager refused and didn’t I know her kid was special and wanted to sit upstairs-even though it was dead downstairs so she could have her pick of tables
had things thrown at me

at least once a shift something happens

yesterday was ok tho-nothing did happen-boring shift to be fair

LOL I love this😂

VapeVamp12 · 24/08/2022 14:14

I've seen tiktoks about this too. I think its quite common. One guy said if you're a dick at starbucks he will always serve you decaf rather than regular coffee.

My first job was in a bakery and if people were rude and nasty for no reason i'd put their cake / bun / donut in the paper bag with the tongs and then squeeze it so it was all squished. I'm not sorry either.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 24/08/2022 14:15

FFS - people can be absolute arseholes to food service staff, but messing with their orders? That's really screwed up.

I stopped drinking caffeine over 10 years ago due to suffering from repeated panic attacks, which weren't being helped by regularly consuming caffeine. I also suffer from heart palpitations. If someone gave me caffeinated coffee now I would be an absolute mess.

Atmywitsend29 · 24/08/2022 14:17

I had a barista give me a decaf coffee "in case you forgot pregnant women shouldn't have caffeine" and that was the day I had to really remind myself I won't do well in prison.

Yanbu.

A few weeks ago in the town centre I saw a full grown bloke pull a wee lass who looked to be in her late teens over the counter so he could scream in her face how effin stupid she was because his card declined - so she refused to give him 'His fucking hard earned food' he flipped trays and threw shit about and left before anyone could formulate a thought.

Bubblebubblebah · 24/08/2022 14:18

It's for SM. Even the biggest idiots I know wouldn't actually mess with food such as caffeine instead of decaf.

Ha at the sweet summer child asking how vile can people be ordering a burger. 😁
Very. Very vile.

catandcoffee · 24/08/2022 14:18

I thought this was well known....never ever be rude or send your food back to the kitchen staff 😏

Atmywitsend29 · 24/08/2022 14:20

I will also say I used to work in food service, yes people can be horrible, slag them off when they leave but don't intentionally fuck with their food order. That's a whole mess of potential intolerances or allergies.
There are better ways to be petty.

newtb · 24/08/2022 14:22

I'm allergic to caffeine - it gives me thé shits. It would be their problem.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 24/08/2022 14:24

Michael Winner used to be a prick to restaurant staff. There's a reason why jizz is sometimes called "Winner's sauce"...

cstaff · 24/08/2022 14:27

I have to say I do my best not to piss off service staff especially when there is food involved.

I have just come back from lunch with a friend - at a place we go 2 or 3 times a week and they know us and know our orders. They were a bit late with our coffees and as my friend was sitting nearest to the counter I asked her to just mention it to the guy behind the counter but she refused saying that they could spit in it.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 24/08/2022 14:29

What is it about working in the food service industry that turns people into spiteful twats? Are the people that mess with others food really that petty that they can take some satisfaction out of doing something as nasty as messing with peoples food? People buy food and drink on the same day that any number of awful things could have happened to them. Are all people that work with food small minded enough to take it personally if someone is having a bad day or just some of them?

How about if we apply this to other jobs? I’m a TA, probably get paid a similar wage to many in food service, so if a parent isn’t full of smiles and manners to me one day can I refuse to care for and educate their child that day? Or maybe teach them something wrong?

What about doctors surgeries? If a patients stress makes them come across a little abruptly, is it acceptable for them to be prescribed the wrong medication? They were rude after all.

I could go on with examples. People that serve food and drink and think it’s ok to mess with peoples orders are pathetic, scummy human beings.

FrecklesMalone · 24/08/2022 14:29

As a waitress I was so sneered at and called names (stupid little girl, birdie legs, you) Clicked at, whistled for. Told to smile more. Told had a great arse. Was too slow (when very busy) and too fast (rudely). Pinched. Spoken to like a dog. The occasional messed up order was on the cards. They were lucky it wasn't as bad as some of the (literal) shit that happened.
Most people are lovely and polite and I was to them too. Didn't want a tip (well I did pre minimum wage and I was paid £1.25 an hour at a very fancy restaurant). Just wanted to be treated respectfully.
