Would you fly to go on holiday if child running a fever

Pottypot · 24/08/2022 05:21

Meant to be flying for a five day holiday on Thursday but my four year old is now running a fever of 38.7. He is cranky because of the temp. and is complaining that swallowing hurts. What do people usually do, still travel and hope it passes or cancel? We were meant to be staying with friends and visiting other people. Ah cant believe he is dick just as we are meant to be going away

You will get 100 people saying they would cancel but if all that us wrong us that he is a bit warm and cranky, i would go.
Give him some calpol and plenty to drink.

PriOn1 · 24/08/2022 05:44

Who are you staying with and are they vulnerable?

Is this a long-awaited trip, or a regular event?

Are you insured and could you do something nice instead closer to home if you cancel?

I think my decision would take all those things into account.

Pepperama · 24/08/2022 05:53

As PriOn1 says, plus I’d do a Covid test. I’d go if negative but wouldn’t if positive. I’d not want to risk causing long Covid for someone - it’s disabling and life-changing.

ilovesooty · 24/08/2022 06:02

I wouldn't imagine anyone would be wanting to sit near a sick person on a flight.

fannyfan · 24/08/2022 06:17

You might end up with a very unwell child if his ears are also sore.

Friend of ours took their kids on holiday one had a sore throat and it had blocked the Eustachian tubes, and the poor child's ear drums ruptured on landing. I can't imagine that was pleasant for anyone

GoAround · 24/08/2022 06:22

Been there with DD. We went to urgent care, swab revealed it was strep throat and were given antibiotics. We asked the doctor’s advice and they said it was ok to travel because she wouldn’t be contagious after 24 hours on the antibiotics apparently.

I wouldn’t go if he was still unwell Thursday and you didn’t know what it was.

dockspider · 24/08/2022 06:25

Honestly no. Having had kids come down with both covid and chicken pox while we’ve been on holiday… it’s miserable for them, stressful for you and a nightmare if it gets serious.

And more importantly it’s just totally irresponsible to take a sick person (child or adult) through busy areas like airports if you don’t have to.

MauisLeftNipple · 24/08/2022 06:28

No, don't travel.

This is what travel.insurance is for. Go to the doctor so you can make a claim.

DSGR · 24/08/2022 06:29

I’d go to the GP asap, get antibiotics even for just in case to take with you next ask their advice. I wouldn’t travel without having seen a health professional first

stillsmilingtoday · 24/08/2022 06:34

Get ears checked before you fly by a doctor to make sure they will be ok. If alright, give calpol and ask them to wear a mask during the flight to prevent others catching it, assuming the illness isn’t serious! Checking insurance and thinking through the impact on anyone you’re staying with if they catch it are good ideas too.

Whiskeypowers · 24/08/2022 06:35

Hurts him to swallow? Sounds like could have tonsillitis in which case antibiotics are needed.

Relaxalotl · 24/08/2022 06:38

I wouldn't go but my DD is prone to febrile convulsions and has to be admitted to hospital on a couple of occasions due to their frequency/length.

Porcupineintherough · 24/08/2022 06:39

That's quite a high temp. I'd get him to the gp and see what they say - if you decide you don't want to go and want to claim on the insurance then you'll need to speak to a doctor before you speak to your insurers anyway.

Relaxalotl · 24/08/2022 06:40

Posted too soon! I was going to add that if your DS is generally able to shake things off quickly with no ill effects, I would be very tempted to get him seen in case antibiotics are needed, stick up on calpol and go anyway.

Quitelikeacatslife · 24/08/2022 06:42

We had a kid behind us constantly coughing on flight home from hols wearing a mask when non of his family was, I'm sure he had covid and it make me feel uncomfortable and worried all the time.
I understand the need not to test but please just do it and at least you'll know
Also take to drs as could be something else that could get worse if you don't sort it.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/08/2022 06:45

Hurts to swallow and a fever was the beginning of Covid for me and DH recently, so I’d get him tested if I were you.

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/08/2022 06:51

I’d covid test first thing, if that’s negative I’d get him seen by a GP or walk in centre and take their advice. Hopefully a dose of anti-biotics will get you on your way. If you have travel insurance you will need a medical certificate to claim so you need to see someone either way.

I wouldn’t cancel unless it’s something highly contagious or I’d been told not travel. Kids usually bounce back the next day.

NanaNelly · 24/08/2022 06:55

No. Because you don’t know what’s causing it and it could worsen on the flight. You could even end up with a medical situation abroad. Just don’t do it. Bed or duvet days on the couch is what he needs till he’s much better.

We travel a lot as a family and I have flight deck crew and cabin crew amongst my children and children in law and I can’t see that any of them would take a child on a flight if they were unwell.

underneaththeash · 24/08/2022 06:57

I'd also do a covid test and check for the start of any spots. Has he had both doses of MMR? Are his ears feeling okay?

I wouldn't fly if it was Covid or anything spotty (chicken pox or measles) or if I thought it was the start of an ear infection but at this time of year, it's unlikely to be flu, so I'd just dose him up with calpol and stick him in between you and your DH.

Pottypot · 24/08/2022 08:12

Just catching up with the thread. Thank you for everyone's advice. Have done a covid test so its not that, chickenpox ruined our last holiday in June so am drawing a blank on what it could be. Its frustrating because we are going back to somewhere we used to live but haven't been back for a couple of years and I really wanted DC to see it. DH is now saying that I should just go on my own but I feel bad.

Frazzled2207 · 24/08/2022 08:14

Well it’s only Tuesday. Quite often when my kids are I’ll it’s only for 1/2 days and they bounce back.

I’m not sure I’d travel with an actually poorly child no.

NovRainbow5 · 24/08/2022 08:15

If it hurts to swallow could it be tonsillitis? Take child to GP to get checked over & ask advice on flying

Ginger1982 · 24/08/2022 08:24

DS currently has tonsillitis and an ear infection and is miserable. I wouldn't put myself, him or anyone else on a flight through that.

fannyfan · 24/08/2022 08:24

@Frazzled2207 it's definitely Wednesday today

Frazzled2207 · 24/08/2022 08:25

@fannyfan
apols yoU’re right.
very bad timing but I think I’d still play it by ear tomorrow. And try and seek a medical opinion today.
