Would you fly to go on holiday if child running a fever

Meant to be flying for a five day holiday on Thursday but my four year old is now running a fever of 38.7. He is cranky because of the temp. and is complaining that swallowing hurts. What do people usually do, still travel and hope it passes or cancel? We were meant to be staying with friends and visiting other people. Ah cant believe he is dick just as we are meant to be going away

I wouldn’t personally go on a flight with a fever, so I wouldn’t do it to my child. Sorry op.

Also as a fellow passenger I would be so pissed off.

Well it’s only Tuesday. Quite often when my kids are I’ll it’s only for 1/2 days and they bounce back.

I’m not sure I’d travel with an actually poorly child no.

It's Wednesday, and they're travelling tomorrow.

LimboLass · 24/08/2022 08:27

Depends in part where you are going? Long flight to a location with not much healthcare - not a chance.

Short flight to a location with good healthcare - possibly still go as long as there are no other red flag symptoms.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2022 08:28

See if you can get a Dr's appointment today put your mind at ease and go on holiday. BTW it is Wednesday @Frazzled2207 😀

Maireas · 24/08/2022 08:29

Listen to pp - cancel.

My son woke up hot (no idea of actual temp as we were in an airport hotel) the morning we were flying to the U.K. from Australia.
Dosed him up with neurofen and we were on our way. No way were we risking a holiday and he felt fine in himself. Kept dosing him on the flight and he was fine, it went off.

ifonly4 · 24/08/2022 08:35

I'd speak to GP, of nothing else it might help with an insurance claim, and you may get some advice. I know three people who are convinced they caught covid at airport or on plane - all three of them had basically isolated before they flew and had people around them who were clearly unwell at airport/plane.

If your family haven't been isolating, I'd test all of you for covid today and tomorrow and all wear a mask on the plane. Obviously use today to top up on Calpol/similar for temperature, pain.

Maireas · 24/08/2022 08:43

If you've ever flown with a cold or throat infection, it's awful. I thought my eardrums were going to burst I was in such agony.
Keep the child warm and rested at home.

PriOn1 · 24/08/2022 08:43

Have done a covid test so its not that, chickenpox ruined our last holiday in June so am drawing a blank on what it could be.

Random cold virus is surely the most obvious?

Pottypot · 24/08/2022 08:43

Yes, might try his GP today. It just feels silly seeing as his temp only appeared yesterday but am just not confident that I know what it is

Do you think he needs antibiotics? If you think it's tonsillitis, get a torch and look at the throat.

MauisLeftNipple · 24/08/2022 06:28

No, don't travel.

This is what travel.insurance is for. Go to the doctor so you can make a claim.

I agree

I'd also point out that a holiday with a poorly DC is probably a ruined holiday. DD came down with tonsillitis the day after we arrived at destination, and it meant the time we had was nothing like the break we wanted.

Ring your insurers now, as the might need medical evidence to support your claim

vivainsomnia · 24/08/2022 08:50

Why all those posts about antibiotics? We know that over prescribing antibiotics does more harm than good and they are only of benefit if the infection is bacterial. Most are viral.

You'll need to make a judgement call OP. Don't bother the GP. Go with your gut feeling. Either way, regular doses of Calpol even when he seems to be doing a bit better.

Skyeheather · 24/08/2022 08:54

I would start giving Calpol every four hours starting now and lots of drinks, hopefully they will feel better by tomorrow. There's 24 hours to go yet and children do recover quickly. There's a good chance the temperature will have gone down by tomorrow.

I think because if it's tonsillitis and looking like there's pus, he'll need antibiotics.

If it is bacterial tonsillitis he will need penicillin or the other antibiotic if he’s intolerant
Calpol won’t do much to help that as it’s an infection

mrsfoof · 24/08/2022 12:00

Sounds like tonsillitis could be a strong possibility. Arrange urgent GP appointment and seek their advice.

Has the OP seen pus? If so bacterial. If not, likely to be viral.

Pottypot · 24/08/2022 12:23

Thank you everyone. Got him an appointment, gp decided fever from belly button, got antibiotics and cleared for travel. Its been a long day as been awake since 5 but at least we can hopefully enjoy our holiday

Belly button infection? That's a new one

Yes, I know - I had years of this!

Pottypot · 24/08/2022 16:41

Yes, there was pus in the belly button - I had been treating it with antiseptic creams and salty water but I guess it just hasn't worked. But it went from a bit red to pus within a couple of days, much quicker than expected. Am just a bit despondent by how many holidays are ruined due to children's illnesses. Thankfully our gp was pretty good about seeing us face to face and getting a prescription
