Does anyone know what happens if you just can't pay these prices?

If you look at the small print on fixed tariffs all of the companies have a get out clause that allows them to cancel your contract with them - including pricing. This normally means changes to their standard variable tariff but legally it can apply to fixed tariffs too.

They just need to give you minimum notice - my supplier has notice set at 30 days before the contract changes.

Keeping my fingers cross that my fixed tariff is allowed to exist until it's natural expiry but as my husband who used to work in the industry keeps reminding me - they don't have to honour it if they can't afford it.

Check your T&Cs, keep taking meter readings and keep checking your account just in case your tariff changes. If they breach their own terms and conditions you can take further action via complaints/ombudsman.

How does it work if you've been paying above the standard variable with the understanding that it will even out when the price cap is higher than your fix? Do they take this into account so you are not worse off by paying extra at first?

RobertsRadio · 23/08/2022 18:14

We need to start taking to the streets and protesting. The French would never put up with this shit. We have got start fighting back.

VaccineSticker · 23/08/2022 18:18

That quote doesn’t include the energy cap price that domestic users will get. You won’t be paying this amount. Octopus states that somewhere on their website.

Blankscreen · 23/08/2022 18:20

Our quote was £777 from octopus. I was/am shocked.

But when I crunched the numbers on the predicted new price cap and t wasn:t far off.

We use about double the average.

I've not fixed and will run the gauntlet of the price cap for now and try and reduce usage.

That is a quote for a fixed rate so isn't covered by the price cap. Price cap only applies to standard variable rate tariffs

Brigante9 · 23/08/2022 18:22

We’ve had similar from Octopus, they’re quoting us almost a grand! We haven’t touched the gas cooker hardly at all (salads, boiled rice and potatoes), we’ve stopped putting on the hot water in the morning, I just see no they can justify this.

AnotherCF · 23/08/2022 18:22

Cheaper to rent an apartment in Spain for the winter and work from home there.

TokyoSushi · 23/08/2022 18:22

I used the MSE should you fix calculator, the quote that we had was a 216% increase so it says don't fix, I hate not knowing exactly what to expect to come out each month though.

I still live in hope that the government will do something

BMW6 · 23/08/2022 18:22

FFS these HUGE fixed rates are based on posters HUGE USEAGE!!!!!

Turn it down or off 🤪

Elodie09 · 23/08/2022 18:24

@RobertsRadio I have recently heard about a campaign group called Enough is Enough , just been googling it.

A skilled Tradeperson is working for a client who “ Sells Electricity”
The client was boasting they have never had it so good.
Soaring profits.
The client is a multi millionaire and is very young.

They are loving it at the expense of ordinary households.
There was talk of potential suicides at a meeting I was at today, people are terrified of how they’ll cope.

What was your kwh useage for 2021. They base their fixed rate on that, not on recent use!!

Frances658 · 23/08/2022 18:28

Your energy use does look particularly high. There's 4 of us in a 5 bed house, even with wfh, our electricity bill is currently half that per month. Do you have a reason for high usage? Electric heaters? Heavy use of electric cars?

Electricity we could definitely save on, but we have a large 4 bed house with double glazing and a boiler which is less than 3 years old. Our thermostat is set at 16 and the heating is on for an hour in the morning, an hour at lunchtime (I WFH) and three in the evening. I'm really not sure how much less we can use without turning off the heating entirely over the winter. Our gas charges this month came to £10, of which £4.50 was standing charge 🤷🏼‍♀️

W00p · 23/08/2022 18:36

I'm sorry but what the actual fuck, 11grand for electricity?! Jesus Christ

WTF is the point of a fixed tariff if they can do that?

RobertsRadio · 23/08/2022 18:39

Elodie09 · 23/08/2022 18:24

@RobertsRadio I have recently heard about a campaign group called Enough is Enough , just been googling it.

Me too, never been on a protest march in my life, but I will be joining any protest marches about this. It's a fucking disgrace, the energy companies are using this a means to just print money. We got rid of the poll tax and brought down the government in the process; we can do the same over this if enough of us get out there and protest and refuse to pay.

DenholmElliot1 · 23/08/2022 18:43

BuenoSucia · 23/08/2022 16:37

Tbh I’d just email back with “lol”.

I'll be emailing back with "fuck off" if I get one.

Can someone clarify something for me please?

When the utility companies offer a fix does that mean you pay that amount of money each month, regardless of how much you use? Or does it mean you pay that much each month and it's adjusted to reflect how much you've actually used?

Elodie09 · 23/08/2022 18:43

Btw @RobertsRadio I don't agree with you
that the fat cats should be shot !!!
I was only posting to say that this campaign group, Enough is Enough was getting off the ground apparently.
I am planning to heat one room and get one of those long puffer coat things.
I plan to spend a lot of time in my local library if they stay open.

PeloAddict · 23/08/2022 18:44

@DenholmElliot1 it fixes the amount you pay per unit and your standing charge

OfficiallyBroken · 23/08/2022 18:44

gonutkin · 23/08/2022 18:13

Does anyone know what happens if you just can't pay these prices?

Prepayment meters, ultimately no energy if you can't top up the prepayment meter (which they can force you to have)

Headabovetheparakeet · 23/08/2022 18:46

@DenholmElliot1

A fixed rate means you fix the kWh cost for your electricity and gas, not the amount you pay each month. The monthly charge is based on their estimate of your usage using those fix rates, not your actual bill.

The only way to compare tariffs and decide if fixing is worth it I'd by looking at the daily standing charge and kWh charge in the offer.
