God knows where these figures have come from, last months gas was £19 and Electric £180!! Who the hell would sign up to £989 per month at nearly £12k a year. Love how they say Loyal Octopus "Most popular" popular to who? Think they mean them.

Octopus have made a bit of a hash of our direct debits - they said they would increase them and then reduced them instead! Anyway, it should be correct from September.

I've used their crystal ball which says we will be £2K in debit by the end of June 2023. That is based on paying slightly less than the amount they are going to start taking from September (about £9 for some reason) and includes the government £600 and around £250 we are currently in credit.

Ouch. I won't be doing anything until I know they are taking the correct amount next month though. After that I might ask them to increase the DD by £100 a month.

I've got to say though - all these small businesses whinging. TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF! I walked down my local high street at around 7.15 this morning and virtually every business had a light on somewhere which they didn't need on.

I assume nobody will be having outside Christmas lights this year...

TheNefariousOrange · 23/08/2022 17:44

I got one for 600 per month from octopus around March time. I literally use about £50 gas and electricity per month (total) after all these price hikes, so I didn't fix and so far I'm not really any worse off. They've kept my direct debit the same but that's because I've racked up nearly 1k in credit.

queenMab99 · 23/08/2022 17:46

This is terrifying, I am a pensioner, I worked into my 60s and am now 72 and have £1085.50p per month, I have no mortgage as it is paid off, my household bills were £550 a month , plus the cost of running my car, my gas and electricity are paid monthly, and luckily got on a 3 year fixed tariff with ovo in October last year, which put my monthly payments up from under £100 to £160. I am just about managing at the moment, with no options to increase my income. I have savings, enough to keep up with repairs to my house etc. but not much. I have always been quite relaxed about money, if I can't afford something I don't have it. I have never considered myself poor, but now I will be one of those who have to choose between eating and heating I am overweight, so maybe it should be eating. I am just over the limit for any benefits, so although I will get some help, it will only be the £400.

Do people not realise it’s totally useless to compare “what I pay now” when it’s August during a very hot summer.
The current price cap is ‘only’ 1,971, that is due to increase to 3,550 in October, so before you even consider using more gas because it’s winter and it’s cold your bills is already £180.
Factor in an increase in use from August compared to November and a £100 bill becomes about £360.
Then add the January increase which is an estimated 30% and you get £468 in January from an “I only pay £100 atm” bill. And that is not even including generous winter usage.

TokyoSushi · 23/08/2022 17:50

Good grief, this is hideous.

Eon Next have just offered my £453 per month to fix, up from £175 currently.

We're having to take our chances on variable which they say will be £230, for now...

Forestgate · 23/08/2022 17:50

Got quoted 7.5k per year from EON

CandidaAlbicans2 · 23/08/2022 17:53

@Lemonyfuckit this explains why Octopus' renewables are so expensive...

"our founder Greg recorded a video to explain.
In the current outdated system, the most expensive type of energy (usually gas) sets the price for ALL types of energy, including renewables. It's bonkers."

So glad we managed to get an eon next fix a week or so ago of £283 / month for existing customers! 12 months and no exit fees so can go back to variable if price cap isn't as high as predicted/ starts coming down (just hope the honour it!) ...im guessing this isn't being offered anymore

Yep. I have worked out that if I used my heating and electricity as I did last winter, my bills will be around £600 a month for Dec to Feb.

Obviously the heating will be on just for an hour or two each day this winter, enough to hopefully keep the house from being damp. We have electric throws to use etc.

My DH is disabled, so if it gets really cold we will have to have the heating on more or he will get ill. We will manage somehow, but lots of people won't be able to.

My sister lives in a part of the UK where it gets really cold, god knows how people there will cope.

The monthly payment is not the important part, the tariffs are the key. What are they if you don't mind me asking?

Hugasauras · 23/08/2022 17:59

Yes, Octopus's crystal ball function predicted our Jan bill at £1000 based off our previous winter usage. So a few months around that over winter and £500 a month DD to stay in credit looks accurate Sad

lindyloo57 · 23/08/2022 18:01

We are still paying £96 a month fixed to October, just the two of us in a three bedroom house, God know what they will charge us in October

Caroffee · 23/08/2022 18:01

The UK is in complete financial meltdown atm. We're heading for a post-War rationing and 'make do and mend' scenario. Oh well, guess we just have to keep calm and carry on.

Yes will post here in a bit (need to log in to look as o forgot) ...the quote was based on the average household/ etc and they don't seem to have yet adjusted out DD for our own usage (was the amount listed on Martin Lewis so that's how we know not taylored to our usage) although I think we are quite close to the price cap level of that makes sense!

megletthesecond · 23/08/2022 18:02

I really hope my octopus fix doesn't go up this winter. I was going to try and build up credit this winter for when the fix ends next June.

I think most people will be cancelling or having a very frugal Christmas.

gonutkin · 23/08/2022 18:04

What!!!! Is this the kind of prices people are being offered? Surely most people cannot physically afford this? That's more than my rent.. I knew they were going up but this makes me feel quite sick. I'm actually speechless

I've just checked my most recent bill (Octopus) and whereas my previous bills stated 'price guaranteed 30th September 2023' it now states 'not applicable'. Are they allowed to do this or have i missed something?

When you look at your details online what does the tariff say?

LBOCS2 · 23/08/2022 18:09

These are the latest rates E.on are offering for a fix, and MSE are saying that this is worth taking 😬.

We're currently paying £144 a month, and it'll go up to £450-odd.

What options do people have if they can’t physically afford more than what they are currently paying? We pay £93 a month and we are always in credit, we currently are having weeks when we only have £20 left in the bank, we don’t have any extra money to give to the energy companies!

InsertPunHere · 23/08/2022 18:13

I'm paying 18.3p per KWH for electricity at the moment, and 3.25p for gas on my fixed tariff - some of these figures are frightening!

The OP's offer is 149% my electricity and 225% my gas. I guess everyone's getting thermals for Christmas this year.
