To not want to say tea instead of dinner

Remembereveryonesayingwhatsupppp · 23/08/2022 12:12

Grew up in the North west, child of the 80’s, teen of the 90’s
Working class dad, middle class mum, we grew up in a nice area. Mum always called ‘Dinners ready!’ Dad would call it tea, friends either called it dinner or tea, grandparents said dinner, then supper.
Anyway, as an adult and ever since, I just naturally say dinner, as in ‘What’s for dinner’ ‘Where are we going for dinner’
Ive no idea why, but when Dh says ‘What’s for tea?’ Or a friend will ask ‘Shall we take the kids out for tea?’ I just hate it 🤷🏻‍♀️Whyyyy 🤣🙈

I'm Irish and to us it's dinner. Tea is the hot stuff in a cup that you drink.

Sistanotcista · 23/08/2022 13:34

I didn't grow up in the UK and the use of "tea" for a meal initially caused me no end of confusion! I get it now though, obviously. No idea if this is correct of not, but I was always taught that dinner was your main meal, therefore interchangeable between lunch and supper, depending on when the larger meal was eaten. We mainly have our largest meal in the evening, and so it is generally called "dinner". If we had been out for lunch (in the good old days when we could afford that), and the evening meal was a small one, like cheese on toast, it was referred to as "supper". But I have no idea whether this is correct usage of the words, or just the way it was done in our house!

Floweryflora · 23/08/2022 13:34

So who is asking you to say it? It feels like you got confused writing your op. Do you mean you don’t want others to say it?

IcakethereforeIam · 23/08/2022 13:35

Use both, though sometimes I call the evening meal 'The Evening Meal', with a pause. Wish I had a set of double doors to 'The Dining Room' that I could open.

I hate the term brew for a cup of tea! My ILs always say ‘do you want a brew?’ and I think ‘what kind of potion are you offering me?’ 🤣 Because to me you brew a potion or beer. Tea isn’t brewed, it’s just…made.

But it's left in the pot to brew ..
It's regional, I also eat butties and like gravy on my chips .

perimenofertility · 23/08/2022 13:35

I always use dinner to describe my main meal of the day which is usually the hot meal. Then I use lunch and tea to describe the smaller meal.
So on an average day I have breakfast, lunch then dinner, or I might have breakfast, dinner then tea.

Well for me the midday meal is lunch. If I’m eating before 5ish then it’s probably tea, but there won’t be a hot component to that meal. An informal meal, hot or cold, at home in the evening is supper. A more formal meal at home, or eating out in the evening is dinner.

Dinner is always eaten in the hall whereas tea can be taken in the conservatory or drawing room. There may not always be staff waiting on at tea but obviously you would need staff for dinner!

I don’t know anyone who owns a teapot! It’s a tea bag in a mug situation

YANBU to want to say Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

YABU to be upset with what other people say.

It’s just language. We have an astounding and amazing range of dialects in the U.K. Enjoy them. I love looking at how language has developed and changed over time. It’s really quite wonderful, and nothing to get tha knickers in a knot about!

MrsMontyD · 23/08/2022 13:39

Where I live supper is a snack, not necessarily just before bed, but definitely later in the evening. Maybe cheese and crackers in front of the telly or some toast when you get in from a night out, definitely not a full sit down meal.

Marvellousmadness · 23/08/2022 13:41

Im with you op!

Whats for tea? Green tea 😅

drbuzzaro · 23/08/2022 13:42

but no one is saying you have to call it tea

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/08/2022 13:43

You just have to wear them down OP. Keep saying dinner and eventually your DH will give up and call the evening meal dinner too. And obvs the midday meal lunch.

Worked for me!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 23/08/2022 13:45

They aren't the same thing IMO.

Dinner is dinner, tea or supper is a pre bedtime snack.

I've never said support and haven't said tea in years, it's just a bedtime snack in this house.

ManateeFair · 23/08/2022 13:47

Nobody appears to be asking you to say ‘tea’. If it annoys you when other people say it, tough shit.

ChobKnees · 23/08/2022 13:51

Ugh I hate "tea" instead of dinner too.

ChobKnees · 23/08/2022 13:51

I also hate "ta" instead of thank you.

The word supper makes me irrationally angry and I can't work out why!

Me too!

welshpolarbear · 23/08/2022 13:55

Hmm. It at school we always had "school dinner" and "dinnertime" was when we had it and then played. So it's always been dinner and tea for me.

I'm in North Wales.

Thornethorn · 23/08/2022 13:55

Dinner is hot lunch where I come from.
Lunch is cold lunch.
Tea is evening meal.
Supper is hot chocolate and toast.

I came on to write exactly that!! Thank you.
Simply cannot bear the sound of it.

Isausernameavailable · 23/08/2022 13:58

YABU to say dinner unless it's formal. Evening meal otherwise is supper.

Remembereveryonesayingwhatsupppp · 23/08/2022 12:16

@Hugasauras Yes, also this! Forgot that, Dh sometimes calls lunch dinner and others too. I’ve always said, breakfast, lunch, dinner. My grandparents saying supper confused it more, but have never said that myself.

Goodness me. I am shocked. Doesn't everyone know that one has breakfast, dinner, high tea, and supper?

Arbesque · 23/08/2022 14:04

I usually have dinner in the evening. But if I had a big meal at lunchtime and just wanted something smaĺ in the evening I would call it tea. They're 2 totally different types of meals here in Dublin.
Supper is always a hot drink or snack before bed. No one here calls their evening meal supper.

I drink a pot of tea every morning. Usually a pot at lunch time if not going out.
