What to do with Mein Kampf?!

Bannedcontent · 23/08/2022 11:22

My late DF was a history buff and after he died we gave a lot of his books to charity but kept a few.

Among them was an English translation of Mein Kampf. It’s a first edition from 1939.

I held on to it as a historic artefact but would now like to move it on.

I can’t sell it on Amazon or eBay as it’s banned.

So the question is: do I bin it? (YABU)
Do I donate it to a library or something? (YANBU) Where?!

'And if he was?'

It just slightly blows my mind (as someone whose entire extended family were murdered by the Nazis) that people can be so unashamedly proud of that history.

Not proud of it but not trying to pretend it didn’t happen.
Its probably a more honest stance than the people who claim they would have sacrificed their families to stand up to The Nazi Party.
Obviously the regime was abhorrent and their actions are completely inexcusable but for a lot of ordinary Germans it was the best way for them to survive. If you study the history it was a “boiled frog” scenario

I am astonished by the people saying destroy it / burn it, do they really not realise the irony of taking a position that is identical to that of the Nazis on writings they disapproved of?

It is so important that we preserve our history and learn from it rather than trying to just erase the parts we don't like - that really is the mindset of the terminally stupid.

OP if it is a first edition then it is probably valuable, I agree entirely with those saying find an antiquarian bookshop and ask them its value and how you can sell it on. Good luck

If people want to read it they can read it. It doesn't have to be this edition. It's already preserved for history.

So your FIL's father was an important Nazi?

That's not what that means at all. You have to understand that the Nazi machine infiltrated absolutely every level of the state, down to the most quotidian, mundane bureaucracy: hence Hannah Arendt on the 'banality of evil'.

My grandfather was in the Hitler Youth but settled in the UK after being brought here as a POW. He died when I was young and I wish I could have talked to him about his history.

You won't get a first edition for £20

To avoid it falling into the wrong hands, is there a museum who might take it off you? I would imagine most booksellers or auction houses would be reluctant to sell it.

DailyMope · 23/08/2022 13:55

NewspaperTaxis · 23/08/2022 12:07

Can't believe Hitler's been cancelled.

😆

Calphurnia88 · 23/08/2022 13:56

If it's a first edition, try the Imperial War Museum (even if just for advice on what to do with it).

My worry would be it getting into the wrong hands.

GingerScallop · 23/08/2022 13:56

Sell it and donate the money to an anti hate charity

Bannedcontent · 23/08/2022 13:57

That’s amazing @moreshitandnofuckingredemption

Believe it or not, DF did have Jewish ancestry.

Gosh, there are a lot of Nazi apologists on this thread. What a shock

Well that is just a pure statement of fact so I am not sure how that makes @Bubblebubblebah a Nazi apologist

The wrong hands can buy it anyway this is just an old copy

UthredofBattenberg · 23/08/2022 13:57

I would enquire at the Imperial War museum, or perhaps at the holocaust memorial Centre or Jewish museum. Perhaps they would accept it as a donation as a teaching aid?

I think its just banned on ebay and amazon not generally though it was banned in Germany for many decades.

It wasn't banned as such but the state of Bavaria held the copyright and didn't permit reprint. Now moot since the copyright has expired so it's now a free for all.

My family has a huge swazstika flag which my late grandad took off a church in cologne in WW2. I think it's in my mum's loft at the moment. I don't think these sorts of things should be destroyed. I'd donate the book to a museum.

I remember an episode of Four Rooms - that show that was on a few years ago where people try and flog items to dealers who all have their own room, you try and get the highest price you can - an old man came in with a big nazi flag which he’d acquired in a similar way, he just kept it in a draw all those years. All the dealers refused to bid on it. It was recommended he try and find a museum that might want it.
I think profiting off Nazi Memorabilia really is not a reputable thing to do. Even Amazon and Ebay said no thank you and they are not the most reputable companies 😂 it’s just not the done thing. I’d be weary of any seller willing to buy it. I certainly wouldn’t want the the money for it, even for a charity it would feel wrong.
I’m not sure it’s in high demand as a historical artefact as relevant museums already have them, but I guess it’s worth enquiring if you really don’t want to bin it.

Prometheus · 23/08/2022 14:00

Definitely contact a rate book seller. If it’s a first edition it could hugely valuable.

Prometheus · 23/08/2022 14:01

Meant ‘rare’ obviously

I've read it. It's one of the reasons I wish I could have talked to him.

I think I need to leave this thread.

I think you're right.

We have a Great Aunt who is still alive and was in The Hitler Youth. She says as far as she was aware when she joined it was like The Guides or similar. By the time it was obvious what was going on her family told her it was too dangerous to leave. I doubt many 10 year old girls would have stood up to the Nazi regime

Here's a copy of Mein Kampf being sold on eBay for £15.

It seems you can sell it.

You have issues Blood. You don't go around calling people Nazis because they are not breaking down and judging people over something they had no control of. Like fuck would someone refuse baby welcoming ceremony at that times. Whether during nazism or communism.

You are being proper inappropriate with these accusation, especially when you don't even know who you are talking to. You obviously are NOT aware of that history otherwise you would know that you did not need to be important in regime to get presents like that at birth. You were just... Born.

Yeah, it's best you leave because the accusations you are plopping around are not ok.

Oh I get that if someone wants to find it they will, I guess if it were me I wouldn't want to feel responsible for it getting into the wrong hands (especially if this is considered a 'collectors' item).

So since OP asked, museum or university seems the safest bet.
