Used my friends bank card by mistake. Worried.

So my friend used my ebay account to buy something for his partner a few months ago. The card was somehow saved on my eBay account unbeknown to me. One of us probably didn't read the "save for future purchases" message.
Anyway I bought a few things from eBay the other day. Realised today he ended up paying for them.

I messaged him immediately. But last night he contacted his bank and they have refunded the payments and launched an investigation.
He's going to contact the bank tomorrow and explain.
I might be being irrational as this must happen all the time nowadays but i'm very worried about this. What will happen now?

Op you absolutely categorically are not be in trouble.

There has to be intent for fraud. You had none.

Your friend is stupid for leaving his details on your account.

Thanks. I just panicked. Hopefully this will be rectified tomorrow. I just remember the days you wernt even allowed to use someone else's bank card in a shop. Is this still a thing. I was classing it the same as online transactions and also without his (but also my) prior knowledge

You won't get in trouble for fraud at all, they will more than likely just take funds back off him and you will need to give him the funds back and they will advise him not to use his bank details on other accounts again

Ian genuinely suprised they some of you can make a cup of tea. Honestly, what is all this melodramatic drivel.

  1. OP, get a grip - you made a mistake
  2. The rest of you, stop feeding into her over anxious mind
  3. Your friend would have reported it as fraudulent activity, hence the 'investigation'
  4. FFS!

When bank realize it wasn't fraud and he basically allowed you to use his card, they'll take back their money and you'll owe him the money. Pay him either way, right now. Storm in a teacup.

Precisely Confused. That's an insane reaction! He told them his card was used without permission??

That was exactly what I thought. This could easily have been sorted by saying ‘no problem, this is my account number for a transfer’, and then you sort out the eBay account to delete his card off it.

Yea he had no idea it was me. We send eachother money all the time so I was just going to transfer him what I'd spent but he'd already reported it as didn't know his card was on my eBay so wouldn't have even checked with me first. It was only when I saw his name on payment details today when I got an update I realised.

Our friends had this. One friend put their card details into the other friends just eat app. Then without realising that friend was ordering food on just eat and the payment way from the other friends account.

mom sure it’ll be fine and get resolved.

How? When you use a saved card on just eat, you still need to enter the security code

There's a point I hadn't thought of. It never asked me for a security code like most other sites do. Hmm???

He did the right thing told the bank ASAP so they could block the card. Banks know its not unusual for someone to make a low purchase on a stolen or cloned card to check it works before going for a big purchase later.

Shops still won't allow people to use someone else's card. Although we have contact less payments occasionally you still need the pin number.

Dinoteeth · 23/08/2022 00:14

Some sites Inc Amazon store the code too (to make impulse purchases easier)

This wouldn't have happened if it asked for the code. As I don't know it. You should always have to enter it.
I just pressed pay and it did it. I haven't used eBay for a while so just aimlessly tapped and didn't give it a second thought.

Own up. Get your pal to contact the bank and tell them the truth. Pay your mate what your purchases cost. It's that simple!

stuntbubbles · 23/08/2022 02:56

Missing the point but why would he need to use your eBay account but his card? It’s not a rigorous process to open an online account somewhere.
