Used my friends bank card by mistake. Worried.

So my friend used my ebay account to buy something for his partner a few months ago. The card was somehow saved on my eBay account unbeknown to me. One of us probably didn't read the "save for future purchases" message.
Anyway I bought a few things from eBay the other day. Realised today he ended up paying for them.

I messaged him immediately. But last night he contacted his bank and they have refunded the payments and launched an investigation.
He's going to contact the bank tomorrow and explain.
I might be being irrational as this must happen all the time nowadays but i'm very worried about this. What will happen now?

Yep, you're being daft and letting your anxieties run wild OP. Easily done in the moment.

Transfer £51 to the friend. He'll phone his bank and explain. They'll probably take the money back out of his account and drop the investigation.

The bank have already refunded him. So I'm not sure what's going to happen now. I didn't realise until today. By which point he'd contacted his bank. Had a new card ordered and an investigation is underway.

The supplier from whom you ordered products will probably contact you and say the payment has failed -- unless you contact them first and explain you used the wrong card.

You have told your friend you used his card inadvertently; that's all there is to it. He must have input the data for it to have been saved there.

He has his money back, now you need to pay for what you have ordered.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

How childish "mumoftheyear". But whatever you gotta do to get your kicks eh? 🤣 sad! As I said. Not interested in a thread. Keep scrolling coz no one has time for trolls.

I very much doubt the bank will do anything. If your friend explains that since he reported it he has found out who made the purchases they will just ask him to return the refund and they will close the case

No need to think you will be investigated for anything. Genuine mistake that I am sure happens a lot more than you think when you see how easy it is to save your card details

That's what I keep telling myself. I just hope he contacts them tomorrow to explain and I can forget about it. But I can't help irrationally panicking about it till it's sorted. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

It'll be fine.

You pay him the money, he sends the money back to the bank.

I was scammed last year. Bank refunded me and just told me that if I did get a refund from the dodgy company (unlikely) to just let them know so they could claw their money back.

Don't stress, he just needs to tell the bank what's happened.

He's told me to hang fire until he's spoken to them. I originally messaged him to just pay him back but it was already too late. Very annoying but these posts have reassured me for tonight atleast 😊

Don't worry!!! I authorised my daughter to use my credit card to buy food on UberEats in Leeds. So, when she came home pissed one night in Newcastle, she accidentally used my account to order food on UberEats. She thought my card hadn't been saved and that she was using hers.

I panicked on seeing the transaction, contacted the card issuer (having no idea it had been my DD!). I got a new card, a new pin, and a refund of both charges.

However, UberEats are now looking for her to pay for the two deliveries lol!

I think best case scenario will be my friend pays back refunds to bank and I pay him what I owe him. Worst case I get lots of angry messages from eBay sellers. I hope anyway. Either of these are preferable to fraud.

Dinoteeth · 22/08/2022 23:41

Op the Bank will be happy they have the answer simple error, they may or may not ask you to pay the £51 let's face it that is peanuts to the bank.

What they will be on at is making sure your friend doesn't give out his card details again. He'll likely get a talking too, yeah we've refunded this time but don't go giving your card to other people you silly little schoolboy!

I hadn't thought of it that way. But others have said the same and it makes sense. I don't even save my own card on my phone. Just PayPal.

CapMarvel · 22/08/2022 23:47

Op you absolutely categorically are not be in trouble.

There has to be intent for fraud. You had none.

Your friend is stupid for leaving his details on your account.
