How on earth can I save my feet?

Sorry to post here, extremely boring question I need answers for! I have recently bought a dog... lots of walking and no matter what I do or try my feet are covered in blisters. It's making it impossible to carry on! I wear sports socks and use plasters with shoes I've worn in... how do I stop this? I'm getting so limited on shoes I can wear. Thank you😀

Zinc oxide tape. Tape your feet where you know you get problems before you start. Doesn't come off like plasters.

Compede (or cheap supermarket versions) good for over existing blisters especially on heel.

Gel insoles great if you are heavy on balls of your feet

Quveas · 22/08/2022 21:19

If your feet are particularly sensitive try diabetic socks - they have no seams to rub. You can get cushioned ones like these, which are great in boots for dog walking. Not cheap, but they will last forever. www.norfolksocks.com/cushioned-diabetic-and-oedema-friendly-walking-hiking-soft-top-socks-alfie.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw0oyYBhDGARIsAMZEuMskNtIrMnjnOVbpoSsUDJC4KHKtdsXM9Mf5NNnC_YA54lQm04IXg8waAuJjEALw_wcB

Came to suggest the same as @mawofone - I've found 1000 mile running socks great too. Managed a marathon with zero blisters (obviously with well fitting trainers too!)

Bestcatmum · 22/08/2022 21:24

1000 mile socks four seasons variety. They have a double layer that prevent blistering. I've worn them for years for 20 mile hikes.
Backcountry walking boots. Get a foot measuring guide off the Internet and measure your feet properly. I am 5.5 E and get my half size wide walking boots from them. Instant heaven. Walking boots ate designed to assist with gait, they have a rocker bottom, and prevent the shearing pressure that causes blisters. I never get them now.

longtompot · 22/08/2022 21:25

I wear a pair of Karrimor walking trainers for walking my spaniel and they were comfortable from the first time I wore them. I also have walking boots. My most comfortable pair were these below but not at this price. I think I paid £75 for them both times. Sadly can't find them at a price I am happy to pay so am now looking at Bareback walking boots.
I also wear Grub wellies for very wet walks. All the footwear I have mentioned I have found helped with plantar fasciitis which I started to get when I first got my dog and was wearing Dunlop cheapy wellies.
To help with your current blisters them Compeed blister plasters are amazing. But you need to get some good comfy footwear.

It'll be the sweat. You need to be washing your feet thoroughly straight after walking - preferably with something a little antiseptic - we use tea tree skin wash. Then dry them thoroughly and leave socks off etc so that the air gets to them. Sweat and moisture plus some friction causes blisters.

I wear well fitting expensive hiking boots in the winter and platform crocs with socks in warmer/dry weather. So comfy

Windypants21 · 22/08/2022 22:12

I'm with the person who said vaseline. Put it on the pressure points. If you've been lazy your foot skin will probably be soft so it will take a while to toughen up. Try spray deodorant too if you have sweaty feet. Hopefully your trainers fit well and dont excessively rub too. Watch out for your socks, not nylon but cotton.

Pava22 · 22/08/2022 22:22

@longtompot they have them at the same price you paid here... not sure if same model.

@longtompot second half of the page

I have several plantar faciitis and struggle with shoes. Mine is so bad when I don't use my feet even just sat on the sofa for a bit I end up hobbling through arch and heel pain. I have insoles made and I started wearing sketchers and walking is more comfortable now. These ones. Although I bought them on holiday in Spain for €56 so cheaper than the link.

Still have to hobble for half an hour when I first wake up though. I used to be a big walker but not so much anymore as I wil pay for it the next day!

Thank you, that's very kind, but the boots I mentioned were Timberlands. My walking trainers are Karrimor

Quartz2208 · 22/08/2022 23:01

Yep you need proper socks and shoes!

pumpkinpie01 · 22/08/2022 23:01

I walk miles with my dog every day and wear Skechers, never get blisters they are really comfy .

WonderingWanda · 22/08/2022 23:05

For running trainers they recommend you go up a size from your usual to allow for foot swelling.

Walking boots you need to allow room for a thicker sock but your foot shouldn't be sliding about.

Where are you getting the blisters? And after how many miles? My feet are quite narrow so they slide a bit in walking boots, after 10 miles I get blisters on the soles of my feet even with a double sock...and every other variety of walking sock I have tried. Not a blister in sight my Saucony running trainers though which have great underfoot padding.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 21:00

I'd get proper walking socks too if you can. Sports socks are thick but not soft like walking socks. With a thin pair under them you should see a difference

I walk a LOT including multi day walking holidays and swear by double skinned socks. However really good trainers/ boots also important.

Pava22 · 23/08/2022 02:18

@longtompot ah! So sorry. Ia there an outlet store at all?

Arou · 23/08/2022 02:49

Skechers with memory foam inserts - you’ll never go back! Sincerely, someone whose skin is made of tissue paper

fizzyfood · 23/08/2022 03:19

Sketchers vote here too. Cotton socks and make sure you tie them tight enough as blisters are caused by friction.

sashh · 23/08/2022 03:47

Somanysocks · 22/08/2022 20:53

I'm sorry I don't care about your feet but
WHERE is the picture of the new doggy?

Yes this is the important question.

Pinkywoo · 23/08/2022 08:15

Ex dancer here, we used to put surgical spirit on our feet to toughen them up and prevent blisters, especially for contemporary when you're spinning on a grippy floor with bare feet! I'd definitely try proper walking socks too, they're pricey but really make a difference.

But don't do surgical spirit while you have blisters (at least if any have popped) or it will be very painful!

Pinkywoo · 24/08/2022 17:31

Oh yes it stings like a bastard, but it will stop any infections!

talknomore · 24/08/2022 17:43

IMHO it is too hot to wear socks and trainers or walking boots at the moment.
My best walking sandals are those and I never wear socks with them.
www.asos.com/teva/teva-midform-universal-chunky-sandals-in-black/prd/202436123

This is 3rd year I've been wearing them and they are not in a bad shape yet, I walk around 2 hours a ay walking my dog wearing them, pretty much live in them for 6 months or so.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/08/2022 18:12

I was told by someone, who regularly runs these are the best socks to protect your felt from blisters. Not cheap. Two layered socks (twin skin). Bought them for dd, who got a series of blisters on a 2 day hike when she wore normal hiking socks.

Zero blisters with these: www.amazon.co.uk/Hilly-Socks-Twin-Skin-Blister/dp/B09CPWYWCJ?pd_rd_w=g72Gf&content-id=amzn1.sym.f1b1bc68-3e1d-446a-a02a-35878ac4404b&pf_rd_p=f1b1bc68-3e1d-446a-a02a-35878ac4404b&pf_rd_r=4NV85MYA3GRA4WBB0A0F&pd_rd_wg=m2iw3&pd_rd_r=dabdd8c9-0897-45de-903d-0edf35a88d5b&pd_rd_i=B09CPWYWCJ&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_rp_1_i

I also bought this to put on her feet. She forgot the second day of the walk. But didn’t get any blisters thanks to the socks. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000MV919I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1
