Is it acceptable to tell someone to blow their nose?

I didn't, but felt like it.
In the library, the person next to me on the PC was snorting/sniffing really loudly every minute.
I had no earphones else I'd have put them in.
I have misophonia which doesn't help but regardless I think it's a disgusting thing to do and adults should know better. It's really not hard to blow your nose.
See this a lot actually from adults, does it bother anyone else?

I just offer a tissue. But it doesn't always help with hay fever

notlyndasnell · 22/08/2022 13:41

I had that on a plane once. Chap next to me kept sniffing so like the previous poster I got out a packet on tissues and offered one - like one would do with a cigarette.
He declined, so I muttered (audibly) "well then stop sniffing" and he did.
I know I'm an old bag btw 🤣

notlyndasnell · 22/08/2022 13:42

of tissues

Crazycrazylady · 22/08/2022 15:26

If it's not it should be!

Brefugee · 22/08/2022 15:29

haha, I'd have offered tissues too and if he'd declined i would have just said "well use your sleeve then but stop sniffing please"

KangarooKenny · 22/08/2022 15:30

I’d offer a tissue rather than an ultimatum !

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 22/08/2022 15:32

No matter how much I blow my nose, I still need to sniff. I would not find it acceptable to have someone comment on it; I'd feel insulted. Mind your own business.

LeevMarie · 22/08/2022 15:40

I'm with you on this one, op. I hate listening to people sniffing - it really goes through me. I know I'm old, but I'm of the generation who were told to always carry tissues with you. When and why did this go out of fashion?! 😅

Needmorelego · 22/08/2022 15:43

I can't actually blow my nose. Don't know why...but I've never been able to.

Me too! Couldn’t have put it better myself!

Same here. I have nasal polyps so it feels like my nose is perpetually blocked. There is nothing to blow and doing so would inflame them even further.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 22/08/2022 16:09

I would have just moved if it was bothering me to be honest. I suffer bad with sinus and hayfever and blowing the nose sometimes just does nothing as it keeps running. Easier to move than cause unnecessary conflict as so many crazy people around now I would say nothing and move.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/08/2022 16:13

I actually find the sound of nose blowing far more annoying

10HailMarys · 22/08/2022 16:14

I do hate hearing people sniff, but the world doesn't revolve around me so of course I wouldn't tell someone to blow their nose. People sniff for all sorts of reasons and sometimes it's just a nervous compulsive habit that people can't help. I sympathise because I hate that sort of noise too, but the fact that you have misophonia doesn't mean you get to nitpick at strangers. If someone genuinely seems to be a struggling with a horrible cold that's clearly making them uncomfortable then I might ask them if they want a tissue, but that would be for their own benefit, not mine.

Also, if you have a really bad cold or allergies or something, you basically have to blow my nose as often as you would have to sniff, which I'm sure would be just as annoying for other people.

Everyone does things that other people will sometimes find annoying so I think these are things that, in public spaces, we just have to live with. For example, I absolutely HATE people chewing gum anywhere near me. It really, really bothers me. Everything about it makes me absolutely furious. The sound, the smell of the gum, the chewing action... it's making me tense just thinking about it. But it wouldn't be at all reasonable for me to tell people not to do it (unfortunately!)

that made me laugh - a lot.....

Shaaameless · 22/08/2022 16:20

It drives me fucking mad to hear someone constantly sniffing & snorting every few mi utes. Plus I always have the urge to sniff back. If I knew them I’d offer a tissue or tell them to shut up, otherwise I’ probably just offer the tissue as they may have sinus trouble …

Jericha · 22/08/2022 18:22

I find there's different levels of sniffing. A colleague has sinus issues. She blows her nose regularly and her sniffing doesn't annoy me as it's a small, dry sounding noise. My BIL when he has a cold and doesn't blow his nose has reduced me to retching before. Disgusting noise 🤢

Kanaloa · 22/08/2022 18:24

Of course it’s appropriate - if the person is your 5 year old child. If it’s an adult in a public place then of course it’s inappropriate and rude.

bellac11 · 22/08/2022 18:28

No not really, it is an annoying sound but like others on here I have issues with my sinuses which means that they are always running but blocked at the same time, blowing makes no difference, sniffing makes no difference, sometimes I sit there and it just runs out without any warning

Have some understanding of what people might be feeling. I feel like Im suffocating sometimes, its unbearable. Im on the right medication but it only goes so far. Its not a cure

Housofgirls · 22/08/2022 18:43

YABU my dd 19 has tourettes and sniffing is one of her tics, its actually quite a common tic. You have no idea why this person was sniffing and it may embarrass them and possibly make the situation worse as with my dad if someone points out her tic it quite often causes her to do it more.

mrsmacmc · 22/08/2022 18:50

That would make me VERY twitchy 😬😳 can't stand sniffing! Offer them a tissue hell offer them the full packet!!!

Saz12 · 22/08/2022 18:58

I hate hearing sniffing. But misophonia is your issue, just as sniffing is your library companions issue. I’m not sure that one actually trumps the other.

Probably best just to move.

Heartrate · 22/08/2022 19:18

Do you think anyone sniffing is doing it for fun or just to annoy you?

My nose runs constantly, blowing it is the last thing it needs. I always have tissues, but this means I almost always have a used tissue in my hand. I've been told that's disgusting too.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/08/2022 19:26

Needmorelego · 22/08/2022 15:43

Nor me. Which nobody ever believes.

Somethingsnappy · 22/08/2022 19:26

Why is the sound of someone blowing their nose preferable to the sound of sniffing, I wonder? They both sound vaguely unpleasant. Is it just social conditioning?

I think it would be very rude to comment. Much ruder than any perceived rudeness from the sniffer. Sometimes noses just don't stop running. People can't be blowing their noses non-stop.
