To be in despair at kids hairstyles

I know it's personal choice and it's none of my business but I can't get my head around the current 'trend' for shaving your kids head but leaving a mop of hair on top to tie up in some awful, crappy ponytail/bun. I saw a 2 year old boy with it the other day and it made me want to vom.

YABU

AIBU to be 'in despair' at the number of minor things which seem to make many MNers 'vom', retch, fume, shudder and display all kinds of ludicrous overreactions? It's ridiculously self-indulgent and over-dramatic.

It's a hairstyle you don't happen to like. That's all. No 'vomming' necessary.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/08/2022 09:26

My adult son had his hair cut like that picture for about 3/4 years. I can't see what's so bad about it that anyone would despair or want to vomit at seeing it on a child

My 11 year old refuses to have the top of his hair short, it's about ear length and really curly. he does let me do an under cut on it but refuses to wear it up

Oysterbabe · 22/08/2022 09:27

Meh, it's just hair. A harmless trend.

Sonnex · 22/08/2022 09:30

Yes my 17y old and his mates have all got the pencil moustaches (cos that's all they can do 🤣) and many have mullets or these top knots. It is quite a look for sure! Really cracks me up, but in an affectionate way. It's normal for teens to try and look radically different from their parents. It's not their fault they don't realise it has all been done before in the eighties 😁.

It's the end of the summer holidays, they've all gone a bit feral. The schools will impose order in the next couple of weeks, let them express themselves for a bit!

I swear one of ds mates is the double of Kevin from coronation Street circa 1986 now.

fufflecake · 22/08/2022 09:36

Still not understanding what is wrong with this hair that would cause anyone to vomit. I'm impressed a 2 year old keeps the hair tie in as mine wants to eat them

10HailMarys · 22/08/2022 09:38

Who the fuck can be bothered to even give a shit about someone else's hair, let alone 'despair' and 'want to vom'? Have you got some sort of phobia or something?

NerrSnerr · 22/08/2022 09:39

The best thing to do if you don't like hair like this is not to get your hair styled like it.

Life would be dull if we all had the same hairstyle wouldn't it?

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 22/08/2022 09:42

I like it. It’s like Peaky Blinders hair but longer.

It’s just preparing them for the forthcoming Mad Max end times. Get teaching them bongos too!

drunktrifle · 22/08/2022 09:47

I don't think it's reached my town yet. There are a minority mullets breaking through but the Turkish barber haircut is the still predominant one.

namechangetheworld · 22/08/2022 09:54

OP, I get it. I've never seen this on a child but this style makes me shudder a bit when I see it on adults. I don't know why.

miserablecat · 22/08/2022 09:56

I'm not massively keen but unless someone's asking me to style my own hair like it I can't get too worked up about it. There was a trend for a shaved head and a rat-tail when I was at school in the late 80s/90s.

vroom321 · 22/08/2022 09:14

Here

Beautiful man! What's wrong with that?

Fizbosshoes · 22/08/2022 10:01

YABU simply for only just noticing it. It's been around at least 3 years where I live! and has made no dramatic impact on my life in digestive system

Georgeskitchen · 22/08/2022 10:07

People have had daft hair cuts for centuries, I'm struggling to grasp how someone's hairstyle could be vomit inducing, unless there hair is crawling with lice?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/08/2022 10:13

There was a trend for a shaved head and a rat-tail when I was at school in the late 80s/90s.

There was MASSIVE drama in my school in the early 90s when a boy's rat tail was cut off. He had been cultivating that for years and years.

SudocremOnEverything · 22/08/2022 10:22

My two year old is currently sporting a mullet. The only hair he has that really grows is on the back of his head.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/08/2022 10:27

I'm 64 and a former teacher. I've been rolling my eyes at repeating hairstyle trends for decades.

A more worrying trend that seems to be making a reappearance is for teenagers leaving their shoelaces untied and dangling all over the place.

Notlosinganyweight · 22/08/2022 10:29

This might make you froth at the mouth OP, but my preschooler son has very long hair. I did think of that buzzcut long on top style as a better way to manage it, but will probably keep it all long. He loves his hair and is unwilling to part with it now.

I never used to get the skinhead apart from a fringe look, but apart from that, couldn't give a toss what hair style kids have.

fufflecake · 22/08/2022 10:30

I don't like that but it wouldn't make me vom

thatslow · 22/08/2022 10:33

Don’t mind that, it’s the current trend for young lads. Not keen when its like this but permed and left down, it’s all in their face, looks messy, dry and like a scarecrow.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 22/08/2022 10:34

I prefer that than the mop top Boden clothes only fringe in the eyes knife and fork job that middle class parents do because it’s ‘not trying too hard’ and ‘we’re much too busy to go to the barbers, and I’d rather save the £8 towards our annual trip to Val d’isere, darling’

Naimee87 · 22/08/2022 10:34

Hahaha! I am not a fan of the top knot look either BUT my DS(12) was with the grandparents last week and when i picked him up he revealed his new haircut, all shaved underneath with a longer top layer. But he actually looks really really good! And he loves it. Im way more concerned with what girls his age seem to be wearing out and about these days(not in the UK) skin-tight gym clothes, leaving very little to the imagination (redbull/cigarettes/vapes on full display so clearly not on route to the gym) nails like talons and make up you would need a shovel to get off. Luckily DS seems fine with just shorts/tshirt! Maybe the joys of having a boy I guess, i know no differently.
