Will you/have you stopped buying “branded” food?

I remember a few years back a nice thread about what branded foods were good and worth the cost. I remember a lot of people thinking Napolina tomatoes were really tasty compared to “own brand” tinned tomatoes.

With the price of food going up and up, I wonder whether the devotees of certain brands will be still getting them because they’re worth it, or making sacrifices to save some money?

So if you’ve been a devotee of a name brand food, are you giving it up?? What would you be really reluctant to ever compromise on? What’s a false economy? I’m not asking if you are going to be making savings/changes overall, but if you were really dedicated to one particular brand would you give it up??

My favourite “branded” thing is Hellman’s mayonnaise and I’m not planning on giving it up but I am using a lot less and being more careful to only put a little bit on my plate so I don’t waste it.

YABU= I will NOT be giving up my favourite branded foods.
YANBU= I will be giving up my favourite brands to save money.

My dh would forgive me more easily for having an affair with an entire rugby team than he would if I gave him anything other than Heinz ketchup or HP.
I hate the ketchup, it's so sweet.

He doesn't smoke, drink or have an expensive, niche hobby so no worries.

My DS would be the same (not the Rugby Team , obvs , no young man wants to think of his mother DTD Grin )

He was "ok" with Lidl ketchup but doesn't beat Heinz .

"Don'r be chintzy Mother" would be his answer .

We have swapped most stuff not because we had to but because I was sick fed up spending so much on food. The only two things I buy is Heinz tomato sauce and decent kitchen roll. If I buy cheap kitchen roll I end up going through it faster as I use more than i would normally.

Surprised how many people are so tied to Heinz products. I don't like them at all.

We don't generally use ketchup and either hang on to the odd sachet or McDonalds pot that comes our way or buy some from whatever supermarket we're in when we feel the need. The current bottle is from M&S, half used and over a year out of date, which suggests that it's been on the go for a couple of years at least.

The only canned soup I eat is tomato, other flavours I make my own, and I vastly prefer Baxters to Heinz, but since I discovered that M&S and Waitrose own brand is more or less the same as Baxters and only 50 p a tin, that's what I buy.

(We don't get all our shopping from M&S or Waitrose btw, most of it comes from Aldi, just get some bits from these two when I have a discount coupon of some sort usually).

Beans, we get Branston, due to preference, and get them from Costco, or in multipacks when on offer.

I wonder how many people could A. pick out Heinz from a genuinely blind taste test and B. actively prefer it to cheaper alternatives?

MrsClatterbuck · 22/08/2022 07:08

M&S beans for Heinz also their digestives for McVities. Cheaper and just as good. Their frozen peas much cheaper than Birds
Eye. Tried Sainsbury Fruit and Fibre. Not good at all or their digestives.

I also buy M&S tinned tomatoes which are cheaper and buy supermarket laundry products but can't seem to give up Fairy washing up liquid.
Basically if the non branded product is as good as the branded I will swap.

My two must have branded were, Fairy Liquid and Birdseye peas. I've found the Aldi washing up liquid a good swap but nothing beats Birdseye Peas in my opinion!

Try M&S which I find just as good and cheaper.

@PeloAddict my kind of woman! I bloody love gherkins 🙌

Camesawconquered · 22/08/2022 07:33

Own brand everything except for Nescafé Azera (I get it cheap in B&M).

The best own brand ketchup I've found is M&S - it's 85p and so tomatoey, we all love it.

CakeCrumbs44 · 22/08/2022 07:35

We hardly buy any branded stuff anyway, unless it's on a really good special offer.

A few things I don't swap:
Cheerios
Sharwoods egg noodles
Coke zero
Dairylea

I've tried alternatives to all of these before and they just weren't good.

MrsClatterbuck · 22/08/2022 07:40

The supermarket laundry liquid I buy is Sainsbury's colour bio but I can only get it in the smaller bottle and haven't been able to get the larger one in months. Also their non bio with softener has disappeared from the shelves. Very frustrating but then I'm in NI.

MarchingOnTogether · 22/08/2022 07:54

I buy a mixed bag of branded items and supermarkers budget brand , own brand and luxury brand.
For now we will.continue as we are, I've recently been diagnosed with coeliacs so I've had the added cost of buying GF for me but we've made a saving by cutting out takeaway

Simonjt · 22/08/2022 07:56

The only branded items we buy are marmite and hendersons relish, apart from that we buy own brand, usually the value range for things like beans, tomatoes etc.

MyPenIsHuge · 22/08/2022 13:17

I'm not giving up skips - I have allergies and they're the only crisps I really like. Handy for throwing in my bag for when I need to take tablets. I also don't want to give up my Ecover zero dishwasher tabs and laundry detergent because smell triggers my sensory issues and I haven't found any cheaper that work for me 😳
