Will you/have you stopped buying “branded” food?

I remember a few years back a nice thread about what branded foods were good and worth the cost. I remember a lot of people thinking Napolina tomatoes were really tasty compared to “own brand” tinned tomatoes.

With the price of food going up and up, I wonder whether the devotees of certain brands will be still getting them because they’re worth it, or making sacrifices to save some money?

So if you’ve been a devotee of a name brand food, are you giving it up?? What would you be really reluctant to ever compromise on? What’s a false economy? I’m not asking if you are going to be making savings/changes overall, but if you were really dedicated to one particular brand would you give it up??

My favourite “branded” thing is Hellman’s mayonnaise and I’m not planning on giving it up but I am using a lot less and being more careful to only put a little bit on my plate so I don’t waste it.

YABU= I will NOT be giving up my favourite branded foods.
YANBU= I will be giving up my favourite brands to save money.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything branded 😒🤔
Not sure if that's good or bad....

UserError012345 · 21/08/2022 08:54

Ha...oops not a food. But still branded.

jennyt82 · 21/08/2022 09:03

Heinz baked beans and Yorkshire tea are the only 2 that I couldn't change.

I am prepared to try any substitutions but one thing that’s really bugging me is the quality of some own brand stuff. Example is tried Aldi biscuits and they were not pleasant at all, kind of chemical taste to them so this worries me about the ingredients used and whether they are more harmful for your health?

Which biscuits were they? I've worked in a major biscuit factory and watched them all come out of the same oven to be packed into 20 different branded wrappers.

Wotrewelookinat · 21/08/2022 09:10

We don’t buy any branded stuff apart from vegan things like Alpro yoghurt. We’ve bought all he supermarket equivalent for years from Tesco, Aldi and Lidl and find them generally fine, I can’t think of anything we’ve tried that we wouldn’t buy again.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 21/08/2022 09:10

good point about the Polish mayonaise, i think i have seen that in Lidl, quite happy with Lidl mayanaise but might try the one mentioned

redfairy · 21/08/2022 09:14

I'm quite happy buying own brands and there is only me to please. I don't like a stronger brew so the cheaper tea bags suit me fine. I think probably the only thing I prefer are Scotts Porridge Oats as they are creamier; plus my friend said the cheap ones were what were swept off the floor with the rats droppings. An image I can't quite forget...

Quail15 · 21/08/2022 09:15

Coffee and arla lactofree butter are the only brands we will keep buying - although I have started buying cheaper vegan blocks/butter to use in baking. If we buy brands now it's because they are on offer and cheaper than own brands. I'm spending a lot more time comparing prices.

SoftSheen · 21/08/2022 09:16

We don't buy that many branded things, but three things I am quite attached to are Yeo Valley spreadable butter, Jordan's jumbo porridge oats and Illy coffee. Also the children like Heinz ketchup.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/08/2022 09:17

I have more chance of a trip to the moon than parting DH from his beloved Yorkshire Tea.

Otherwise... we are giving everything a go.

LastWordsOfALiar · 21/08/2022 09:20

Definitely stop buying Hellman's, it's rubbish compared to the Polish mayo in Tesco, Majonez (Polish food section).

The Polish version is cheaper and MUCH more flavourful as the egg content is higher.

Has he tried the Sainsbury's red label? Swap it out and see if he notices. I love Yorkshire Tea and I think the red label is a great alternative and much cheaper

IHateHeatWaves · 21/08/2022 09:23

My DH is a massive food snob and I have been able to convert him.

I give him taster plates and make him pick the favourite. So far he’s picked the cheapest, usually from Aldi or Lidl.

georgarina · 21/08/2022 09:23

I buy all generic medicine. Own brand organic oats, beans, crackers, fish fingers and tinned food.

Everything else I get branded. I've heard about 'same factory different labels' but ime there's a noticeable difference in quality and how long products last, so it's a false economy.

Also don't understand Aldi/Lidl! I have both by me and maybe they're just rubbish ones but everything I've bought - besides produce and the kids' cereal bars - has either tasted awful, been bad quality, or gone off immediately. I have friends who swear by them but they mainly talk about stuff like burgers/meat, chocolate bars and Pringles which I don't buy weekly anyway.

makeitsonumber1 · 21/08/2022 09:23

Heinz ketchup is grim as it just tastes of sugars. The Wilkin & Sons one is yum and actually tastes of tomatoes.

Upwiththelark76 · 21/08/2022 09:23

I have stopped doing my weekly shop at Morrisons now the prices have gone up by 20/30p. I now shop at Lidl and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of their own brand products . I was a devoted lurpack consumer but have swapped to Lidl s own dupe . I haven’t found a better alternative to Nescafé gold blend or Yorkshire teabags though so I’m sticking with them

CrystalSanta · 21/08/2022 09:27

After switching from Heinz to Branston beans a few years ago, we've discovered the Aldi ones taste the same as Branston! Same with ketchup - got over the change from Heinz to Tesco and the switch to Aldi was fine.
Never thought we'd find something to sub Pepsi Max, but Aldi managed again!

We buy own brand on most things. Happy to go budget range on some things but stick to the 'finer' own brand ranges on things like sausages, fish fingers, jam, lemon curd, crisps.

I won't give up Yorkshire teabags or Heinz salad cream and the cats like Whiskas. If it's on offer I do like Yeovalley yoghurt too.

DeanStockwelll · 21/08/2022 09:34

womaninatightspot · 21/08/2022 08:05

That’s interesting. It’s not so much the taste but the texture. Aldi one is dry for about 3 slices either end of the loaf. Not stale but I’m assuming it’s being frozen at some point.

This is also true for princess fruit juice , they make M&S and Tescos and probably others too.
Mcvities also make biscuits all supermarket brands as well

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2022 09:41

The only things I am fussy about the brand are tea bags and washing powder. Everything else I normally buy based on price (best value) or appearance (which bread looks fresh). Oh and of course the fussy cat's food is branded.

autienotnaughty · 21/08/2022 09:44

We shop Aldi no branded foods anymore

PinkButtercups · 21/08/2022 09:46

Nope, don't buy branded unless on an offer. Once I moved out of my parents I didn't buy branded 🤣.

SurfBox · 21/08/2022 09:48

Cereal is the main one has to be Kellogs rice krispies or cornflakes. Although my son wanted mini chocolate Weetabix and the price has shot up so I bought him Asdas own and he seems quite happy

interesting as I would say these are the most similar generally. At school we did a blind test taste in business class of brands and nobody could tell the difference between the labelled brand and the generics-this is from people who swore they knew the difference between Coca Cola and Pepsi etc. I think alot of it can be psychological.

Lcb123 · 21/08/2022 09:50

I never buy branded food anyway - all tastes the same!

crazy4cats · 21/08/2022 09:51

PeloAddict · 21/08/2022 01:48

I keep trying different stuff! Really like Heinz mayo but found Lidl own brand weirdly is v similar
Baked beans have to be Heinz, and I like fage yoghurt. Apart from that I eat mostly own brand stuff
Oh and pickles have to be Sainsburys crinkle cut they emailed to say I bought the most in our city BlushBlushBlush

how many jars do you buy a month? 😁

PollyEsther · 21/08/2022 09:51

Not necessarily branded, but I won’t buy cheap washing up liquid, cling film, bin bags, tea bags, yoghurt (except for marinades) or tomatoes. Probably some others but I can’t remember right now. Oh! Bear yo-yos for DD because she completely refuses fruit and veg, except cucumber, and they are pure fruit but she eats them! So, whilst it’s processed and not ideal, it does at least get 1 a day into her!

We’re not hugely brand driven here, but you can prise my bold liquid tablets and fairy out of my cold dead hands! Grin We’ve got finish dishwasher tablet at the moment too because they were cheaper than own brand as on offer on Amazon. We get quite a lot of household stuff on subscribe & save.
