Settle an argument between me and DH. He said “most kids hate [primary] school”

I said it’s sad that our DS doesn’t like school (a reason why we’re looking to move him to another, different type of school). DH said: “Yeah but most kids hate school.”
I said, “Not primary! I loved my primary school.”
He replied that I was usual and that most kids hate primary as well as secondary school.

YANBU - most kids don’t hate primary
YABU - most kids hate primary school

School is so different now compared to when I was different. I think most kids love primary now.

FunsizedandFabulous · 19/08/2022 21:37

My Y11 DD hates secondary school and has fond memories of primary. She can't wait to leave secondary. It is a bit of a hot-house, to be fair to her. The GCSE process is a bitch.

Greydogs123 · 19/08/2022 21:38

I think kids are less likely to hate primary school than secondary. I quite enjoyed primary school and felt like I achieved and had friends. At secondary I was bullied, underachieving and incredibly shy, so I mostly hated it.

Knittingnanny2 · 19/08/2022 21:39

I hope that’s not true! I was an infant teacher for nearly 40 years- hopefully lots of fun was had in my classroom.
I did close the door and do the national curriculum my way a lot though….the singing, dancing, painting, playing way.

RNBrie · 19/08/2022 21:39

Two of mine love school and one of them isn't that fussed but doesn't hate it.

There are a couple of kids in each of their classes that really don't want to be there for various reasons but I'd say 27/28 out of 30 of them are more than happy to be there.

My eldest is going in to year 6 and she says every day how much she is looking forward to going back to school in Sept.

Crinkle77 · 19/08/2022 21:39

I went to a nice primary school, loved my teachers and had lots of nice friends. But... I would have preferred not to go to school given the choice if you know what I mean. It's like work. I like my job and colleagues but if I won the lottery I wouldn't be sad at the thought of never going to work again. Get what I mean?

thirdfiddle · 19/08/2022 21:41

Can I vote 50/50? One pretty much hated it. Hates being told what to do, so school was never going to be a favourite. The other has mostly enjoyed it, but has kind of outgrown it and can't leave yet.

Maybe more remember hating it than actually do because by the time they finish primary they are ready to move on. In reception they're basically playing all day (or think they are!) so what's not to like.

AntlerRose · 19/08/2022 21:46

It will be a mix. I think most chikdren will enjoy some parts of the day and not like other bits.
An awful lot struggle at lunch and breaktime, or find assembly dull, or hate PE or struggle with learning or remembering rules.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/08/2022 21:46

I went to a perfectly nice junior school and I was lucky to go. I never minded going but I much preferred my senior school!

Both my boys were a bit over primary school by y6 but in general liked it

TheMoth · 19/08/2022 22:02

Yep, I think by yr6, kids are ready to move and are now bored. But my god, is it a leap to high school. I often wonder just wtf we're doing, putting 11 yr olds in the same place as 15/16yr olds, especially when some 11 yrolds hand round with 16yr olds.

I'm drawn more and more to the idea of middle schools (I know some UK places have them).

Tinkletoetots · 19/08/2022 22:03

If your child hates school then you should move them!!
You wouldn't continue indefinitely in a job you hated if you had the chance to move.
Kids should definitely enjoy school.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/08/2022 22:06

I hated secondary from more or less the first week.

Always happy in primary, and know/knew people nostalgic about primary, know absolutely no one wistful about secondary

shazzybazzy34 · 19/08/2022 22:09

I hated primary and loved Secondary. My kids are the opposite.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/08/2022 22:09

I loved primary school, hated secondary

HippeePrincess · 19/08/2022 22:12

I hated school from year 2/3 onwards

Whataretheodds · 19/08/2022 22:13

I can't speak for most, but i loved it.

FlyingSaucerss · 19/08/2022 22:14

All my kids hate school and I have 4 they would all chose not to go if it was an option and 2 cry when they have to go. In fact my daughter point black refuses most mornings and can take up to an hour to get her in 🤦🏻

FlyingSaucerss · 19/08/2022 22:16

I liked primary but hated secondary my mum said secondary is “the best years of your life” and I would miss it when I leave, I have never once missed it! It was awful

YingMei · 19/08/2022 22:16

My DD (going into year 5) really loves it. My DS (going into year 3) is a bit indifferent but certainly doesn't hate it.
I hated it but I was bullied. Loved secondary school though.

Cattenberg · 19/08/2022 22:16

I found primary school a bit scary at first, but enjoyed it overall.

I didn’t enjoy secondary school much. We were all horrible at that age (some more than others) and it was just a toxic environment.

Iamnotthe1 · 19/08/2022 22:17

In my experience, the vast majority enjoy primary school. Obviously, if it was a choice between being at school and lounging around at home, most would pick home but they do actually enjoy it.

There are rare occassions where individual children don't enjoy primary and that can be for a multitude of different reasons ranging from them really struggling or their specific needs not being met at one end to a parent's own negative school experience affecting their child's at the other.

I didn't mind secondary overall, but I was fed that same bullshit too. Nope secondary was definitely not the best part of my life. In fact life improved steadily year on year until I hit about 30.

My oldest has just finished infants. She loves school at the moment. Her teachers have been incredible. My youngest doesn't mind school, but he would prefer to be at home if he had the choice

Left · 19/08/2022 22:23

I don’t think changing schools always makes a difference. I went to four and hated them all. My child hates school too, felt so guilty about putting them through it 😔
