To want a job one day a week and to ask for ideas on where I might find one!!

Our situation: 3 young DC 2,4 and 7
DH normal job 9-5 wfh 3 days 2 days long commute to London. Some family help. I recently got a job working 2 days a a week - Great job, excellent benefits and security, also managerial which was impossible to get part time previously, so great going well etc.. BUT this cost of living rise has massively impacted us. In an ideal world I'd do this job 3 days a week and be about £500 better off a month which I think would keep us afloat. However this just isn't possible (job share) so I'm looking for work for an extra day (or night) a week. Any ideas??? I'll do anything!
I have a degree and am a qualified teacher, good IT skills pretty able to pick up stuff quickly etc.

Things I've ruled out:
Supply teaching: so sporadic and want you to be super flexible with days which I can't be, not guaranteed etc.

Tutoring: most want after school time which is very tricky for us ie could manage one afternoon but would prob have to work 2 hrs over 3 days which doesn't work

Care jobs: I would def do this! Live in an area with loads of care home and would be willing to do a night shift but when I've contacted them they say the minimum part time is 2 nights/days ie 24 hrs. I think this would be too much.

I have to be able to prioritise my main job as it has really good long term prospects.

Any ideas of what I could do?? Is there such a thing as night work from home??

Thanks!

Childcare? Temp agencies are gagging for staff but you might find a perm 1 day a week as some places have quite uneven numbers of kids over the week so sometimes just need "an extra person on Wednesday" or whatever.

I would love someone like you to work for me one day a week, so think about advertising on a Personal Assistant/housekeeping assistance online noticeboard?

I'm recently disabled, and in Rehab. My house and life has fallen apart but I need a mix of things that I need compressing into one job, iyswim?

I'm sure there are other women in my position. We don't need personal care as such but we need an assistant.

I need help with life admin, house admin, work admin, telephone calls, tidying, decluttering, laundry, just organising things really - but I'd also ideally like someone who doesn't mind going a bit of light cleaning up and making me a lunch or popping to the shops.

I would totally love this type of job for sure! Any ideas where this kind of thing might be advertised? I hope you manage to find someone to help you x

I think you should look at supply teaching again. I do it and there is such a demand for teachers at the moment you can pretty much get exactly what you want.

I'm really inflexible with my agency. Grin There is a load of stuff I won't do. I do exactly the number of days I want to do and I only do pre booked days.

Maybe I should look at this again then? It just seems to take such a long time to join an agency upload everything and so on to then not get work? I will look into it again though thank you

Honestly, at the moment they would make it as easy as possible. I talk to them like the woman out of The Devil Wears Prada. Just tell them exactly what you want.

You might be able to get a day PPA at the same school. The last longish term cover I did before the summer holidays the agency pitched three and I chose the one I wanted.

I would say teaching too, but look for a job share one day a week. Lots of teachers want a 4 day week and it is hard for schools to find someone who is willing to do a job share that is only one day.

Or classroom cover if you don't want a permanent position, just contact local schools and say you are available on a certain day.

Citizens Advice have lots of staff that work as Advisers one day a week.

We are all volunteers! And it rages nearly a year to do the training so doesn’t really fit the brief….

*takes not rages

I taught health and social care for years, colleges often have someone to arrange and monitor work placements. This is usually part time.

I have not worked for three years and agencies are still contacting me with work. It might be worth registering with a few agencies, better if you can be flexible with the day you work.

Saturday job in local library

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 18/08/2022 08:29

All the pubs round me are desperate for weekend staff

TenoringBehind · 18/08/2022 08:39

parish council clerk

Saturday job in a library but those jobs are like gold dust round here (lots of existing experienced library volunteers chasing the occasional paid role)

Another thing that could be worth looking into is options with local pet sitting businesses if that appeals. Have tried to have small pets go in for a week's holiday (ones that are housed in a cage so just need somewhere to rest it) and 2 places have said they are booked up and then some more, both this year and going into the most popular Summer weeks of 2023! I am seriously thinking of offering some hours myself as I'd enjoy that.

Do you have any Extra Care housing near you? They require care staff 24/7 and often have people just doing one night a week as long as it's a regular night. Usually a 10pm to 7am shift. The care is provided by domiciliary care providers rather than care homes which are run differently.

Sapphirensteel · 18/08/2022 14:07

Try your local college? Sometimes they need someone with a specialism to teach a specific module ( try childcare courses) I found the work really easy after school teaching.

How about course content development for a training company?
