To want a job one day a week and to ask for ideas on where I might find one!!

Our situation: 3 young DC 2,4 and 7
DH normal job 9-5 wfh 3 days 2 days long commute to London. Some family help. I recently got a job working 2 days a a week - Great job, excellent benefits and security, also managerial which was impossible to get part time previously, so great going well etc.. BUT this cost of living rise has massively impacted us. In an ideal world I'd do this job 3 days a week and be about £500 better off a month which I think would keep us afloat. However this just isn't possible (job share) so I'm looking for work for an extra day (or night) a week. Any ideas??? I'll do anything!
I have a degree and am a qualified teacher, good IT skills pretty able to pick up stuff quickly etc.

Things I've ruled out:
Supply teaching: so sporadic and want you to be super flexible with days which I can't be, not guaranteed etc.

Tutoring: most want after school time which is very tricky for us ie could manage one afternoon but would prob have to work 2 hrs over 3 days which doesn't work

Care jobs: I would def do this! Live in an area with loads of care home and would be willing to do a night shift but when I've contacted them they say the minimum part time is 2 nights/days ie 24 hrs. I think this would be too much.

I have to be able to prioritise my main job as it has really good long term prospects.

Any ideas of what I could do?? Is there such a thing as night work from home??

Thanks!

What about something you could do from home like a virtual pa or advertise locally and do some cleaning.

dannydyerismydad · 17/08/2022 20:07

Don't rule out the tutoring. A friend has carved out a good career for herself supporting home schooling families.

What about in a supermarket or other shops?

Jules912 · 17/08/2022 20:18

Retail? In my student days ( admittedly a while ago) lots of shops were happy for staff to just work Saturday's as it's their busiest day and most the permanent staff didn't want to.

I would love someone like you to work for me one day a week, so think about advertising on a Personal Assistant/housekeeping assistance online noticeboard?

I'm recently disabled, and in Rehab. My house and life has fallen apart but I need a mix of things that I need compressing into one job, iyswim?

I'm sure there are other women in my position. We don't need personal care as such but we need an assistant.

I need help with life admin, house admin, work admin, telephone calls, tidying, decluttering, laundry, just organising things really - but I'd also ideally like someone who doesn't mind going a bit of light cleaning up and making me a lunch or popping to the shops.

Wedding venues

Bank support work?

Estate agency doing Saturday viewings

QuietBatperson15 · 17/08/2022 20:22

I noticed you said you would consider working in care. There are agencies you can join (I joined one called Newcross who are UK wide) and you can pick shifts in hospitals or care homes day or night. I could go weeks without working then pick up a shift again. Also NHS bank healthcare support worker - same idea, picking a day or night to suit you.

Try voluntary sector

Ormally · 17/08/2022 20:26

Have seen one day a week jobs in universities or connected institutes, mostly in London, through jobs.ac.uk
Some of these also have some evening work or irregular, but not really unsociable, hours. Think library shelving at weekends, or managing evening hires of space, sports areas and so on. Some of them will be due to a jobshare arrangement.
The pay was not bad but for me, I would have to commute and that is what steered me away from them as it sucks up quite a bit.
Personally I'd still prefer a retail day somewhere you like, within walking or cycling distance. It can be hard work but the hours and bonus/discount can be flexed depending on the time of year.

Bar work a couple of evenings a week, once the kids are in bed?

TheMagicDeckchair · 17/08/2022 20:35

Is there something else you could do for your current employer for one day a week on the same salary, outside of your usual role?

I work 2 days a week for a very small company, and I reckon I could find another day’s worth of work to do a week if I wanted to. But maybe that wouldn’t happen in a larger company.

Dominoes the pizza place or mcdonalds

loosebutton · 17/08/2022 20:36

Local corner shop?

lady725516 · 17/08/2022 20:39

I would suggest health care assistant on the bank within your nearest nhs hospital (always shifts available and you pick what you want to work)

Bar work
Supermarket work

saveforthat · 17/08/2022 20:39

Citizens Advice have lots of staff that work as Advisers one day a week.

Deliaskis · 17/08/2022 20:45

I know you say you can't do your current job 3 days a week due to job share, but have you spoken with HR or your manager about any opportunities to work a day a week in a different role? I work in a reasonably large organisation, and we have for example somebody who does 2 days in HR and a day in reception. Somebody else does 3 days in a training role and a day in a different department in admin. Might be worth asking? Many orgs can't or won't advertise very part time roles and just find the resource internally.

clerkhaton · 17/08/2022 20:45

Have you thought about Clerking (Clerk to Governing Body/Board)? With your education background, you'd be perfect. Attendance at set meetings through the academic year (often early evening) and the rest, working from home. Most LAs are looking for Clerks! Have a look on your LA website under governance.

savoycabbage · 17/08/2022 20:47

I think you should look at supply teaching again. I do it and there is such a demand for teachers at the moment you can pretty much get exactly what you want.

I'm really inflexible with my agency. Grin There is a load of stuff I won't do. I do exactly the number of days I want to do and I only do pre booked days.

dammit88 · 17/08/2022 20:49

Bank HCA at the hospital?

alexdgr8 · 17/08/2022 20:51

domiciliary care worker or support assistant.
ask a local agency.
they always need people.
good luck.

Loulou2202 · 17/08/2022 21:04

Have you looked at the website Indeed Flex, someone I know picks up shifts at all types of places for a day or 2 at a time when on holiday or weekends off from full time job for extra money. I haven’t used it myself but sounds like it might be worth a look for you.

cheerfulpanda · 17/08/2022 21:14

Another vote for supermarkets.

I used to be on a 12hr contract - one evening (4.5) and one weekend day (7.5). I managed to squeeze it in on top of a typical M-F 9-5 office job and could always pick up extra evening shifts or the other weekend when I was desperate for the extra cash.

Pixiedust878 · 17/08/2022 21:18

Another vote for reconsidering supply teaching. They’re so desperate at the moment that I’m sure you could dictate what you will / won’t do.
