Greenford: Manhunt for mobility scooter murder suspect www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-62575679

Now they have a clear CCTV image it only has to be a matter of time before an arrest is made but seriously, what is this world coming to.

The article gives details of 6 murders in 4 days in London.

This is terrifying. I like to know what is going on around me but it is very tempting to take a step back from the news and live in my own bubble.

Police in this country are beyond useless nowadays. Criminals know they can break the law with near impunity as the chances of them being caught are little to none. They'll probably catch this guy because the papers are making a big deal of it. But it's a shame they don't bother most of the time.

HangingOver · 17/08/2022 18:12

We went past the scene about an hour after it happened. Totally shocking. I assumed it was a hit and run though.

thefizz · 17/08/2022 18:15

Poor man, so vulnerable at that age. The attackers are such cowards.

He was originally from Clare in Ireland. Report from Irish news here...

i cried at this, the old man looked so lovely and friendly and i bet his family are devastated, also imagine he never thought at the age of 87 he would be murdered as his death, Imagine going through your life and getting to the end just to have it taken away like that. What goes through someones mind to do that to someone.

And if he CAN do that to some defenceless man in a scooter i don't think there is anything that he cant do

DirectionToPerfection · 17/08/2022 18:23

Utterly appalling, that poor man.

Seems he regularly collected for charity outside the shops, he was obviously a kind man.

How twisted can someone be to even contemplate stabbing a harmless pensioner in broad daylight? Absolute scum of the earth.

Well what I mean is that on AIBU which normally gets lots of responses as I type now there are just 16 and the thread wasn't even started until this afternoon despite it being on the news for 2 days.

If it had been a child murdered in this way I think there would have been a lot more comment.

It happened yesterday afternoon. Why are posters going on about 2 days? It wasn't much more than 24 hours ago.

Random unprovoked attacks are often (but not always) due to mental illness. There's no point looking for rational thought and asking what was going through their head.

He was surrounded by a gang. Were they all mentally ill?

Is it because he is old that nobody seems very interested in this dreadful attack.

This has reached the news where we are at the moment, we’re in Ottawa.

First of all, I said often but not always.

Secondly, there is no firm information at the moment that he was attacked by a gang. The police are looking for a single individual, not many. The CCTV is of good quality. If there were multiple people involved they would likely have CCTV of them all and would be looking for all of them. There were eye witness reports of people gathered around him but it is as yet unclear if this was before, during, or after the attack.

CherryRipe1 · 17/08/2022 18:47

Poor man. He was elderly, vulnerable & inoffensive. What a vile piece of shit to do that to someone, no moral compass whatsoever. I'm insensed.

LovinglifeAF · 17/08/2022 18:49

Absolutely awful. Poor old soul xx

Beachsidesunset · 17/08/2022 18:56

Who was it who said violent attacks are 'part and parcel of living in a big city'? Oh, yes, the mayor.

Various reports that he had been busking &/or collecting for charity. It may have been for money? I drove past today - very heavy police presence at the site. Queues back for miles with people rubber necking.
Poor old boy 😔

People will rubber neck though it's only natural. It'd be more odd if they didn't

People should remember their manners and their driving lessons and focus on the road. Rubber necking is disgraceful.

Unforgettablefire · 17/08/2022 19:15

Utter scum. No need at all the poor man and his family. R.I.P

That is zero comfort- That a deranged knifeman is roaming around targeting vulnerable pensioners.
Dangerously mentally ill people need keeping away from potential victims -
But that won’t happen.

I didn't say it was any comfort. I said it was pointless for people to try to rationalise this sort of thing by asking what people were thinking.

hattie43 · 17/08/2022 19:22

London has become a cesspit now .

JustDanceAddict · 17/08/2022 19:23

Theres a clear picture of this man on the bbc website so hopefully he will be caught very soon.
I also agree more needs to be done. In my area - which is supposed to be ‘decent’ - my teen ds has been confronted by ‘youths’ wanting his phone. Amazingly he got away, but I see blatant drug dealing and there’s always reports on Next Door re mugging etc.

Countingthedays22 · 17/08/2022 19:26

I'm really shocked by this. To think of everything this man made it through in his 87 years, including a world war and covid just to be taken in this pointless cowardly act.

Sounds to me like an excuse for an unspeakable act.
Alleged perp looks like a thug.

DrSophia · 17/08/2022 19:33

He was a real gentleman, a kind soul. I simply don't understand it. RIP Thomas 💙

London has become a cesspit now .

It sadly has.
It has changed massively for the worse, especially over last 30 yrs or so.

the80sweregreat · 17/08/2022 19:37

It is a senseless crime.
His poor family must be heartbroken
Absolutely shocking
