Just found this creature squirming in the garden - I really can’t work out what it is - and what to
do with it - can anyone help?
it doesn’t seem to have eyes or ears - the size of a baby rat. No hair. Much shorter tail than a rat. Help!!

Looks like a mole I think.
Wouldn't have a clue what to do with the poor little thing 😳

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 16/08/2022 17:06

Eek, not sure - I think i'd put it back where i found it and prayed its mother came back, poor little thing Sad

Plump82 · 16/08/2022 17:06

Aww that's so sad. Looks like a very premature fox. It's covered in maggots 😥

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 17:07

Any wildlife sanctuary near by ? Vets have an obligation to treat wildlife for free if nothing near by .
Ring any local vet .

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 17:08

And - just to say if the wee thing is beyond help they will pts kindly and humanely . Don't leave it suffering- just call a vet before they close

VerifiedBot2351 · 16/08/2022 17:09

Where’s it come from? Dug up or dropped by a bird?

figtrees · 16/08/2022 17:09

Oh my gosh I think it'd a baby rabbit. It has fly eggs on it snd it's in a really bad way. Can you brush the fly eggs off its legs and lips? If they hatch they will kill it. Where abouts are you? They are notoriously hard to keep alive and he does look super unwell. I'd take it if I was close enough. An animal rehab near you might try but the odds of it making it are very slim.

Nekomata · 16/08/2022 17:09

Looks like a baby rat to me. Poor little thing. Sad

Janeaustensquill · 16/08/2022 17:11

Thank you - there were flies on it when I noticed it. Can’t see any local
sanctuaries so will try vet.

Im pretty sure its a squirrel.

Slidey23 · 16/08/2022 17:16

I think it’s a squirrel too. I saw one on Facebook found my someone in my home town, yesterday I think it was. Unless that was you OP.

SoftSheen · 16/08/2022 17:16

Looks like a baby rat, a very young one. Realistically probably best to PTS.

SoftSheen · 16/08/2022 17:17

Agree that it might be a squirrel rather than a rat.

ofwarren · 16/08/2022 17:19

I think it's a squirrel looking at its nose

Janeaustensquill · 16/08/2022 17:19

Yes my neighbour has suggested a squirrel. I’ve phoned the vet who doesn’t want to know…

OP posts:
ofwarren · 16/08/2022 17:22

If its a squirrel it's less than 2 weeks old with it having no fur and eyes closed.
It would need to be fed special milk with a syringe if it was to survive.
Only a wildlife rescue could help you with that I'd think.

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 17:23

Phone back and tell them they have a legal obligation to treat wildlife!!!

Or try a different vet .

If it were me ....I'd be syringing some kitten milk into it's little mouth , cleaning it up and raising it but I'm a soft git. It doesnt look very well bless it .

Janeaustensquill · 16/08/2022 17:24

Thank you - there’s nowhere near at all. Found it under the oak tree where there is a squirrels dray so I’m wondering if a crow has raided the nest -

OP posts:
ofwarren · 16/08/2022 17:27

It needs a lot of care OP
Kitten or cows milk isn't good for it either unfortunately.
Poor little thing

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/08/2022 17:27

There must be someone near you on FB that will take it in. We have countless groups for all manner of wildlife.

Can you keep it warm and clear the maggots off? Poor little thing

catscatscurrantscurrants · 16/08/2022 17:34

The RSPCA say it's now illegal for wildlife rehabilitators to rear baby grey squirrels, as they're regarded as pests. The best option according to them, is to place the baby back in the tree for the mother to collect.

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 17:36

I know it ms technically illegal but I'd feign ignorance and get some sguiiggle milk

LostForWordsagain · 16/08/2022 17:36

Baby squirrel

can you get it to a wildlife sanctuary? Looks v young poor thing

stillvicarinatutu · 16/08/2022 17:37

No one's gonna get arrested for saving a squirrel.
