Just found this creature squirming in the garden - I really can’t work out what it is - and what to
do with it - can anyone help?
it doesn’t seem to have eyes or ears - the size of a baby rat. No hair. Much shorter tail than a rat. Help!!

I know it ms technically illegal but I'd feign ignorance and get some sguiiggle milk

Same
I'd clean it up and try to help it if nobody else would do it.

Gently wipe the fly eggs off it, and then either feed it or see if there is a sanctuary near you, or try and get it back into the nest. Poor tiny squirrel.

Thanks for all your advice. It’s died - maybe for the best without its mum to look after it. Poor little thing.

Thank you for looking after it Flowers

Baby squirrels have black nails. I think rat (I keep pet ones). Was the nest disturbed. It wouldn't leave the nest at this age. It does have eyes and ears. It's around a week old give or take. Vets so it can be pts, or a wildlife sanctuary. Alternatively post on a local rat group as someone with experience with kits may be able to help.

Looks like a squirrel

userxx · 16/08/2022 18:04

Awwww poor little thing 😞

Electriq · 16/08/2022 18:45

That's a very young baby squirrel.
Unfortunately mother nature is a cruel but wonderful thing and the mother may have abandoned it if it had a problem.

Rip little one.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/08/2022 19:09

A vet doesn't want to know!!! I'd be naming and shaming them!
The poor little baby. He's so sweet.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/08/2022 19:11

Yeah mummy animals often do reject their babies if something is wrong with them

RosieRoww · 16/08/2022 19:13

I think it's baby squirrel.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/08/2022 19:15

TwoMonthsOff · 16/08/2022 19:16

Squirrel maybe but their second litter - (if they have one )is June / July so seems late
they’re called late summer babies

TwoMonthsOff · 16/08/2022 19:17

Oh sorry just read they died
how sad 😢

The RSPCA say it's now illegal for wildlife rehabilitators to rear baby grey squirrels, as they're regarded as pests. The best option according to them, is to place the baby back in the tree for the mother to collect.

This- sadly for the grey squirrels humans are not allowed to keep them, protect them etc. poor wee thing isn’t to blame for decimation of our native Reds, it sadly they do need to be eradicated.

AhaLyn · 16/08/2022 19:55

Eradicated. How horrible. We are the pest on this planet.

TwoMonthsOff · 16/08/2022 20:36

@AhaLyn
agreed
if for instance we never had some victorian land owner shipping over the grey squirrels from America to Woburn park and imagine they weren’t here, they didn’t ask to be brought here, they were just somebody’s idea of fun and ‘exotic’
then the red squirrels would be just as vilified for stripping bark and being ‘vermin’ , people were paid a shilling to produce a red squirrel tail at one point.

it’s all so sad there is room for all of us on this planet and I find it all so depressing genuinely 😢
