To stock up on nappies at 6 months pregnant?

Nellynoo182 · 15/08/2022 18:36

FTM here! Any opinions much appreciated 😊

My local Morrison’s have new born pampers nappies half price at the mo for £6. Should I stock up now? Is this cheap/ a good price for nappies? Or am I being stupid and these offers happen all the time 🤣 I am 6 months pregnant. Thanks!

No don't. Not all brands suit all babies. Some babies' skin reacts and gets rashes with certain brands, others don't suit your baby's shape and leak terribly. Then there's the issue of how quickly your baby grows and whether they will outgrow the size you've stocked up on before you use them up.
One or other of the supermarkets will have a baby event regularly so you can stock up once you've found out which brand you and your baby get along with best.

DiscoBadgers · 15/08/2022 21:02

Nappies are like jeans in that you need to try lots on to find the style that fits perfectly, so I really wouldn’t buy loads of any kind in case it turns out not to be the right fit!

Youdoyoutoday · 15/08/2022 21:03

Pampers are crap!! My first leaked all the time in them so I much prefer asda and now aldi with my 2nd.
But it's not a bad idea to stock up, just maybe not with 1 particular brand

luckylavender · 15/08/2022 21:03

I wouldn't. Different babies suit different nappies.

Watto1 · 15/08/2022 21:05

I stocked up on the smaller nappies and ended up having an 11 pounder! I ended up giving them to dsis who had my nephew 2 months later.

Jellybean23 · 15/08/2022 21:05

Some newborns are too big for that size, what if you have a whopper?

dmask · 15/08/2022 21:06

No definitely don’t stock up!! Another vote for the Aldi newborn, they were great until our baby went up to size 3, then they were rubbish for some reason! I love the pampers now at size 4 pull ups, use the Aldi size 4 normal for nursery (they seem to fit again). There are always deals and you don’t know how they’ll fit your baby. Also get onto some local fb/WhatsApp/freebies groups. There are always people offloading nappies they’ve grown out of so you can try them on for size and see what works.

dmask · 15/08/2022 21:07

I bought a pack of each when they were on offer in terms of stocking up to see which fitted best, then donated the ones I didn’t want. Definitely don’t put all your nappies in one basket!

milawops · 15/08/2022 21:08

Another vote for Aldi nappies but only up to size 2. Once my daughter went into size 3 they were crap. Leaked everytime. We use Asda or sainsburys own brand now

whistleinthewind · 15/08/2022 21:11

size - that won't be obvious till very near the end of your pregnancy. And it doesn't matter what size you or the baby's dad was! From memory DD was 7lb 3oz and it didn't take her long to outgrow them to size 1.

As others say, people prefer different brands. I tried every cheap brand I could but was unhappy with all of them and ended up in the more premium brand. So I saved nectar points, Clubcard points to turn to cash vouchers to shop and kept an eye on all the shops and bought the brand I wanted whenever they were on offer and continued to buy as many of the size I needed and then 3 packs of the next size up. It wasn't till she was about 4 months old till I got to that stage though.

Whattodooo90 · 15/08/2022 21:11

Not stupid at all but Aldi nappies all the way!

whistleinthewind · 15/08/2022 21:13

And I actually hated Aldi and Lidl, same with Asda - I was desperate to stick with them as they were the most economical. But I ended up with pampers pure. Pampers had a weird smell but she's now in the pull ups for sleep time

lochmaree · 15/08/2022 21:19

we used Lidl newborn nappies, I think they're 79p? something like that. then we moved onto cloth nappies, almost 8 weeks in and not a single poo explosion! and baby only poos every 3-4 days!

we use reusable wipes - they are fab, much better than the disposable ones for clearing up poo imo.

So I bought reusable nappies throughout my pregnancy when I saw a good deal, various kinds. but only bought one or two packs of disposable. DS1 we used disposable till about 3m old, and with DS2 we used disposable for about a week I think.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 15/08/2022 21:21

Another vote for don’t buy all the same brand as you may not like them. I plan on buying a variety of nappies in first size again. This worked well last time, as I found some brands better than others.

Beseen22 · 15/08/2022 21:22

I never really got stocking up on nappies. They are reasonable enough to pick up on a weekly shop and then you know how much you need and which brands/size suits your baby. Plus I found both mine moved to size 4 very quickly and stuck at that for ages. Unless it's a phenomenal deal I wouldn't bother.

Runkle · 15/08/2022 21:22

Don't get Pampers - they're stupidly expensive and crap.
Lidl were best for newborn (award winning) but the next size up were crap so we moved to Asda and have stuck with them. Just add a couple to your shopping as well as wipes here and there.

Italiandreams · 15/08/2022 21:24

I wouldn’t go overboard. Mine was in size ones less than a week as he was a big baby and also certain brands of nappies bought him out in a rash . Have a few in but it’s hard to guess what you will need.

Twizbe · 15/08/2022 21:31

Don't get more than 1 pack of nappies before baby comes.

Mine were out of size 1 by 2 weeks old. Would have been such a waste if I'd got loads in advance.

What I would get though are lots of baby wipes. Aldi's are fab and during their baby events they sell huge boxes of them.

iloveyankeecandle · 15/08/2022 21:32

No don't. I used aldi for my first and loved them. They've been awful second time round

fyn · 15/08/2022 21:35

I’ve stocked up on the brand that we like for our baby due later this year. The caveat being, I know what brand I like for little babies (Naty), we will probably swap to a mixture of cloth and Rascal and Friends like our other children when they are older.

I absolutely hated some brands, pampers and Aldi I really dislike, both feel really plasticy. I wouldn’t stock up until you know what works for you!

Nellynoo182 · 15/08/2022 21:35

Thank you everyone for your replies! I will leave it then and defo give the Aldi ones a try as we are big Aldi fans at the best times. Appreciate the advice! X

No! They grow through the sizes so quickly initially you will end up with loads that you don’t use. I, and all NCT friends, love Aldi nappies. For wipes we use cheeky wipes (reusable) as we worked out water wipes were costing us £25 every 3 weeks as a newborn.

namechangedembarrassing · 15/08/2022 21:38

Aldi newborn premium nappies are brilliant

RewildingAmbridge · 15/08/2022 21:40

Different babies are different shapes, so different nappies suit. so many people said Aldi were great but DS was hugely allergic to them. We used a mix of naty, rascal and friends and pampers pure, DS was a long scrawny baby, we had to have size 0 initially rather than size one. Asda and Waitrose own brand were too gappy even pulled tight. DN was a lovely chubby little thing and pampers leaked terribly on her. Nappies are on offer regularly don't get more than one pack of a few brands. It's very much trial and error until you find a brand that works for you.

2020firsttimemum · 15/08/2022 22:00

I personally found that there wasn't much difference in quality in the smaller sizes (0/1/2) so I think the cheaper brands like Aldi and Fred and Flo (Tesco) work fine.

As they sized up into 3/4/5 I found that they started to fit differently and some brands worked better for DS than others.

For the purpose of what you want to do though, I'd do it! I did first time around and will again :)

Oh and congratulations OP
