Genuinely just found this out tonight. I hope I don’t sound stupid but I’m genuinely surprised. I mean it makes sense given the name but still…!

Yes there are a lot of semi-vegans who don't mind using animal products if they're not actually eating them. Eg bank notes, car tyres etc.

No, you don't get to decide they are "semi vegans". The term vegan is not yours to gatekeep.

Surely that's MOST vegans then?
Every vegan I know uses money and has a car Confused

Many years ago, I met someone who was a vegetarian or vegan. They would not use bone china plates, cups or anything that was bc.

Abbreviating bone China to ‘bc’ is the most mumsnet thing I’ve seen today!

AppleBottomRats · 16/08/2022 11:26

The Vegan Society has a definition of veganism:
Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose

Avoiding money and vehicles - not possible or practicable. This also is why vegans use medicines which have been tested on animals or contain animal products, it’s not practicable to avoid them.

Avoiding leather, wool, bone china, feathers etc - all possible and fairly easily done.

Fake vegans. Wannabes! Real vegans won’t even have sex because it’s boning, you think they’re out here driving and spending money and looking at animals?

I didn't know this! I'm 41. I can't believe I thought it just meant very delicate.

LeonardoLeonie · 16/08/2022 11:35

Never thought of it. This makes me wonder, is it not racist to call it China?

Isn't vegan 'leather' e.g plastic really terrible for the environment?

@Strulch Well, I’m a vegetarian and only buy mugs made from fine bone china (the tea genuinely tastes better). Not sure what to do now 😂

IIRC most bone china products are made using a synthetic bone ash nowadays. Im sure you should be able to double check which companies so you know which ones make veggie/vegan friendly tea cups.

So is actual leather. The chemicals used in the tanning process are devastating to the environment, and really bad for the workers as well. Iirc the documentary ‘the true cost’ touches on this.

Yes, I was going to say this. I'm not sure which is the lesser of the two evils. Leather is biodegradable, plastic is not, but leather production is catastrophically bad for the environment. I'm surprised there is not more if a movement against it, other than "it's an animal product so I don't use it"

I get all my shoes second hand.

It's depressing, @AdoptDontBeACunt but it's still mystifying as to why there is no great movement against it, and so little awareness about the effects of leather production amongst people generally.
In my limited experience, most people's objections seem to extend only as far as "It's an animal product and I'm vegan, so..."

I did see a petition that Stella McCartney put her name to to ban leather which mentioned the environmental impact and harm to humans working in the industry but I don’t think it met its target signatures

That's surprising. If only because there are usually lots of attention seeking bandwaggoners happy to have the publicity of putting their name to something - anything - All those slebs

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 16/08/2022 13:48

Whoops , posted too soon.

All those slebs posing naked for PETA , for example 🙄

WrongWayApricot · 16/08/2022 15:39

I think leather impacting the environment isn't as noticed because it doesn't need to harm the environment. It can be tanned without chromium. A bit like how hens just lay eggs, people don't think of battery farms. They think about a hen in a cute little wooden coop with lovely fresh straw, going out to peck in the grass and having her chicks following her. The same with leather, they think of how good it is that the skin isn't wasted, of ye olde times making bags after eating the meat or something. Not gallons and gallons of cancer water.

Ylvamoon · 16/08/2022 15:46

... we could just go back to the good lod days and use urine for leather tanning!

ShhDoNotTell · 16/08/2022 17:03

I love displaying bones around the place. 🦴
