Genuinely just found this out tonight. I hope I don’t sound stupid but I’m genuinely surprised. I mean it makes sense given the name but still…!

I think it's an admirable way to use all the parts of an animal, and it makes beautiful pieces that last a long time. You're not BU to not know though, we all learn something new every day! :]

Montgomerymmoose · 15/08/2022 01:31

I did know ( I used to work in the pottery industry).

newusernamegladys · 15/08/2022 01:39

I didn't know.... what kind of bones??? Cows?? Something else?

maddy68 · 15/08/2022 01:43

What did you think bone china was made from? 🤣

I heard it was horse bones. My mum told me this many years ago.

Thing is, tea tastes better drunk from bone china.

caringcarer · 15/08/2022 01:51

I love my bone China and have a teapot, small milk jug and cup and saucer I use every day. I have always known it was made from bones.

preservesandreserves · 15/08/2022 01:52

I thought it had something to do with being bone dry. like dried in a kiln hotter than regular China?

BlodynGwyn · 15/08/2022 01:54

You can make a glaze to be fired onto ceramic from a loved ones ashes.

LiIo · 15/08/2022 01:58

@Strulch Well, I’m a vegetarian and only buy mugs made from fine bone china (the tea genuinely tastes better). Not sure what to do now 😂

I knew this, as it's not vegan.
As for bone char in sugar, that's not the case in the UK, it's more a USA thing!

ClaryFairchild · 15/08/2022 02:08

Just checked my Maxwell and Williams mug, it says "fine china"... so I think this particular one is safe.....

mawbroon · 15/08/2022 02:13

It makes it really strong, yet if you hold it up to the light, you can see through it.

People think fine bone china is delicate. It's actually really hard wearing

RobertSmithsLipstick · 15/08/2022 02:27

Quite of putting, now I finally know.
It explains that slightly grey tinge.

Adversity · 15/08/2022 02:32

I have seen part of an ancient road made from the cross sections of the vertebrae of cattle. I did know it was made from bones.

AppleBottomRats · 15/08/2022 00:12

It’s common in the US but rare in the U.K. fortunately!

For now

BirdWatch · 15/08/2022 02:58

@LiIo I didn't know until I was buying some Denby and the clerk told me it was suitable for vegetarians. But you already have your fine bone china so you may as well keep it. I am with you on tea (and coffee), tasting better in bone china cup.

sashh · 15/08/2022 02:59

OP

You do know about rice crispies and corn flakes?

??? No, what about them? 🤢

BMW6 · 15/08/2022 04:46

Lol, they're made of

Rice

Corn

LOL

They are made out of rice and corn respectively. Nothing bad, well that's if we gloss over the history of Mr Kellogg.

BMW6 · 15/08/2022 04:47

Snap 😁

I don't think it does. I have bone china which I never use . I much prefer my Emma Bridgewater pottery mugs.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2022 05:37

[Grin].

A lot of old pottery and glassware is also radioactive (yellow or greeny stuff from the early 20th Century IIRC). It had uranium in it and there's a lot still around.

W0tnow · 15/08/2022 05:47

No way.

I’m almost scared to ask…What is baby oil made from?? 😱
